About the project

The transformation

Every roof restoration begins with a detailed drone inspection. High-resolution imagery allowed us to assess the condition of the roof, identify areas of heavier moss and organic contamination, and document any visible pre-existing damage before work began. We then explained our findings to the client and confirmed the safest and most appropriate restoration method for the roof covering.

Professional access equipment was installed to provide our technicians with safe and controlled access to the roofline. The surrounding property was carefully prepared before work began, allowing the team to complete the restoration methodically while protecting elevations, windows and adjoining exterior surfaces. Using specialist low-pressure roof-cleaning equipment, we carefully removed the accumulated moss, dirt, algae and organic staining from the roof tiles. The pressure and cleaning technique were controlled throughout to achieve a thorough result without subjecting the roof covering to unnecessarily aggressive methods. Particular attention was given to tile overlaps, edges, valleys and other areas where moss and debris commonly accumulate. Attention then turned to the block paved driveway, which underwent a detailed mechanical restoration. Years of dirt, algae, black spot and environmental staining were removed from the surface of the blocks. The existing jointing sand was also cleared from between the paving, removing material that had become contaminated with soil, organic spores and weed growth. This created a clean and stable foundation for the new jointing system. Once the driveway had dried sufficiently, the first application of Chiltern Polymeric Sand was carefully swept across the surface and worked into the open joints. Applying the material before compaction allowed the polymeric sand to be driven deeper between the blocks, filling lower voids and supporting the paving from the bottom of the joints upwards. A professional mechanical plate compactor was then used across the driveway. This settled the paving and moved the initial layer of polymeric sand deeper into the joints, reducing hidden voids and improving the interlock between the individual blocks. This stage significantly increases the stability of the driveway and supports the long-term performance of the restored paving. Following compaction, a second application of Chiltern Polymeric Sand was completed to replace the volume lost as the first layer settled into the joints. Every joint was carefully topped up before the surface of the blocks was thoroughly detailed to remove any remaining loose material. The driveway was then lightly misted with water to activate the polymers within the sand. Once cured, the material forms firm but flexible joints that provide improved resistance to erosion, sand washout, ant disturbance and weed establishment. The timber decking was restored using cleaning methods appropriate to the surface and condition of the wood. Algae, dirt, organic growth and general weathering were carefully removed without subjecting the timber to excessive pressure or unnecessary damage. This restored a cleaner, brighter and more consistent appearance while preparing the timber for the final protective treatment. Once the roof, block paved driveway and timber decking restoration work had been completed, Chiltern EverGuard™ was applied across all three surfaces. Chiltern EverGuard™ penetrates the treated substrates to help protect against the regrowth of moss, algae and lichen, keeping the surfaces cleaner for longer. It also helps inhibit the return of black spot and other organic contamination across the driveway and surrounding exterior surfaces. The treatment continues working in the weeks and months following application, helping residual organic staining gradually break down and release from the roof tiles, block paving and timber. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the property’s location, surrounding environment, surface type and ongoing maintenance.

To complete the project, all working areas received a thorough final clean-down. Any remaining debris and residue were removed from the roof drainage areas, driveway, decking and surrounding surfaces, leaving the property clean, tidy and ready for the client to enjoy. The completed restoration left the tiled roof, block paved driveway and timber decking considerably cleaner, brighter and better protected. With Chiltern EverGuard™ applied across every restored surface and the driveway stabilised with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, the property now benefits from improved appearance, stability and longer-term resistance to organic growth.

How this project was restored

  1. 01

    Comprehensive Drone Roof Inspection
