Solar Panel Cleaning
Clean Panels. Pure Water Only.
Grime, pollen and bird droppings build up on solar panels and shade the glass. We clean them with de-ionised water and soft brushes on a water-fed pole, worked from the ground where the access allows, with no detergents and no chemicals.
On the panels
What Builds Up On A Panel
Bird droppings
Opaque, stubborn and sitting right on the glass. Rain does not shift them, so they are the main thing we are there to take off.
Pollen & farm dust
Fine and sticky, and it builds through the spring and summer.
Moss along the bottom frame
Growth gathers in the corners where the frame meets the glass. We clear it along with the faces.
Detergent & tap water
We use neither. The panels are washed and rinsed with de-ionised water only.
How we work
Our working principle
Use the lowest possible pressure and the least amount of chemical necessary to achieve the right result. This may sometimes require additional applications or a more considered process, but we believe that is always preferable to taking the quickest or most aggressive approach. Our priority is to achieve the best possible result while protecting the surface and surrounding environment.
How we clean them
De-ionised Water And A Soft Brush
The panels are washed and rinsed with de-ionised water and a soft-bristle brush on a water-fed pole, worked from the ground where the access allows. No detergents, no chemicals and nothing abrasive near the glass, the frames or the seals.
What we do
What We Clean Off A Panel
Rain takes off the loose dust. What it leaves behind is bird mess, pollen film, tree sap and the moss that gathers along the bottom frame.
We clean with de-ionised water and soft brushes on a water-fed pole, worked from the ground where the access allows. No detergents and no chemicals.
What we clean
Type by type
Every array reached a different way
Roof-Mounted PV
The common domestic array. Cleaned with a water-fed pole from the ground, so nothing stands on the panels.
Ground-Mounted Arrays
Full access, so every panel is brushed and rinsed individually, frames and edges included.
Solar Thermal
Flat plates and evacuated tubes. The same de-ionised water, with more care taken around the manifolds and the seals.
Conservatory & Glass Roofs
Not generating anything, but the same method — de-ionised water and a soft brush.
Our solar panel cleaning service
How we do it, step by step
Every property is different. We start with a free site visit, assess the surfaces, then choose the method and the pressure that suit them.
- 01
Assessment
We check the array, the pitch, the access and the condition of the seals and frames, and confirm the safest way to reach every panel.
- 02
Pure-water clean
De-ionised water and a soft brush on a water-fed pole lift grime and droppings from the glass — worked from the ground, so nothing stands on the array.
- 03
Rinsed and left to dry
The glass is rinsed with de-ionised water and left to dry on its own, with nothing towelled or wiped across it.
- 04
Frames & edges cleared
Moss and debris collecting along the bottom frame is cleared as well as the glass itself.
- 05
Final check
We look over the whole array, flag anything we noticed about the fixings or the seals, and leave the panels clear.

Questions
Solar Panel Cleaning FAQs
Does cleaning improve solar output?
Dirt, pollen, moss and bird mess sit on the glass and shade it, and cleaning takes them off. What that is worth on any particular array depends on how dirty it was and where it sits, so we won't put a figure on it.
How do you clean the panels?
With de-ionised water and soft brushes on a water-fed pole, worked from the ground where the access allows. No detergents, no chemicals and no high pressure.
How often should panels be cleaned?
Typically once a year, or twice if you're near trees, farmland or have a low panel angle that holds dirt.
Aren't solar panels self-cleaning?
Rain takes off the loose dust. What it leaves is bird mess, tree sap, pollen film and the moss that gathers along the bottom frame, and that is what we clean off.
Do you walk on the roof or the panels?
Not on the panels. A water-fed pole lets us reach most domestic arrays from the ground. Where the ground cannot reach, we'll tell you at the site visit rather than improvise on the day.
Do you use any detergent?
No. The panels are washed and rinsed with de-ionised water only, so nothing is left on your roof or washed into the garden.
