Indian sandstone patio cleaning in Princes Risborough: black spot and algae treated, back steps relaid and repointed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™.
Patio Cleaning · 14 towns
Patios in this county sit on chalk hillsides, on damp valley floors, under beech woods and out on the level Vale. We find out what each is laid in, clean it gently and apply Chiltern EverGuard™ afterwards.

Patio Cleaning, county-wide
Buckinghamshire is not one landscape. Chalk hills fold into steep valleys across the south, the Thames runs along the southern edge, and beyond the escarpment lies the Vale of Aylesbury. A patio on a valley floor, a hillside or the Vale weathers in its own way, so where it sits shapes the clean as much as what it is made of.
Hills, valleys and the Vale
Across the south of the county the chalk is cut by river valleys, among them the Wye, the Misbourne and the Chess. Cool, damp air drains into the valley bottoms on still nights, so patios on the low ground dry slowly and green first. Higher up, plots are often built in tiers, and rain carries silt to the foot of each step and wall.
North of the escarpment the ground is broad and level. Rain there has nowhere to run, and it sits wherever a patio was laid with too little fall. Along the Thames, river mist adds a damp of its own to the gardens of the riverside villages.
Paving by era
The county has grown in waves, and each wave left its own kind of garden paving. Knowing which one a patio belongs to tells us a good deal about how it was laid and how it will respond.
Under the canopy
Much of the county lies within the Chilterns National Landscape, and in places its beech woods run right up to garden boundaries. Elsewhere, mature garden trees shade terraces in almost every town. Shade slows drying, fallen leaves rot down into the joints, and that damp, organic layer is exactly what moss and algae need.
Black spot arrives later, on porous stone. It is a lichen rooted in sandstone and limestone, so more pressure only roughens the slab around it. We treat it with a specialist application, and heavy marking can take a second visit. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment then helps reduce regrowth, typically for between 12 and 24 months.

Learn Moreabout Patio Cleaning in MedmenhamHow we work
The stages never change; where we start, and how hard each part is worked, depends on the garden.
At a free site visit we identify the paving, check the joints and note where shade, slope and run-off keep the surface wet, which tells us where the effort needs to go.
Flint, soft brick, lime pointing, planting and timber beside the paving are covered or kept clear, and we decide where the rinse water will drain before any cleaning starts.
Algae, moss and grime are lifted with controlled water at the lowest pressure that works on that material, starting at the highest point of a sloping garden so dirt is not carried back.
Black spot is dealt with by a specialist application instead of extra force. Joints that have washed out or crumbled are refilled with sand so the slabs sit firmly again.
With the paving clean and the joints sound, Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to help slow the return of growth, and we explain simple aftercare before we leave.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
We work from Marlow, on the southern edge of the county, so the river villages, the Chiltern valleys and the Vale are all familiar ground.
Sandstone, limestone, porcelain and concrete are each cleaned their own way, and the method is settled after we have seen your paving, never before.
Many patios here meet flint, soft brick and lime mortar. We protect those materials and keep pressure well away from them throughout the job.
At the visit we say what is likely to lift, what may remain and how much improvement is realistic. We are fully insured on every job.

Questions
Valley bottoms collect cool, damp air, and paving there can stay wet for most of the day after rain, while gardens higher up dry much faster. The stone may be identical; the setting differs, and it also decides how soon growth returns.
Yes. We work from the highest level downwards, check how each step and retaining wall drains, and agree access and hose runs at the site visit so nothing is left to chance on the day.
Yes, on porous stone especially. Indian sandstone, laid in a great many gardens here, is particularly prone to it. Because it is a lichen living in the stone, it needs treatment rather than pressure, and very heavy marking may take a second visit.
Often, yes. Level ground means puddles on any patio laid without enough fall. We check that at the visit and tell you if a low spot is likely to keep greening after cleaning, because that is a laying question rather than a cleaning one.
It typically helps for between 12 and 24 months. Paving under beech trees or on a damp valley floor tends towards the shorter end, and an open, sunny terrace towards the longer. Sweeping away leaves through the autumn makes a real difference.
