Sandstone Patio Cleaning, Marlow
Natural sandstone patio cleaning in Marlow — heavy moss, algae and early black spot removed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™, plus a full gutter clean.
Patio Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Marlow is our home town, and its damp riverside air and mature garden trees are hard on paving. We clean each patio to suit its stone, treat the black spot that pressure cannot shift and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
Two patios in the same road can need quite different handling. Sandstone holds black spot in its pores, limestone marks if it is rushed, porcelain needs an even finish and concrete will tolerate more. At a free site visit we identify what is laid, look at the joints and the growth, and explain which approach we recommend and why.

Marlow gardens
Marlow grew up beside the Thames, and the river shapes its gardens more than most people notice. Mist and damp air hang about on still mornings, and paving beneath a tree canopy or against a north-facing wall can stay wet long after the lawn has dried. That lingering moisture is exactly what green algae, moss and black spot need before they can take hold.
The patios vary as much as the houses. Period homes near the town centre may have older natural stone, inter-war and post-war houses tend to have concrete slabs, and gardens laid out more recently are often Indian sandstone or porcelain. We are based in town and have cleaned patios here, so this mix is familiar ground.
Black spot
Those small, dark, round marks on sandstone are not dirt. Black spot is a lichen, and it anchors itself in the pores of the stone rather than sitting on the face. That is why a powerful wash may lighten the patio overall and still leave the spots behind, and why turning the pressure up mostly roughens the stone around them.
We deal with it in two stages. First the visible marks are worked on with controlled cleaning and a specialist application. Then, with the paving clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment soaks in to target the live growth held within the stone. Where the spotting is very dense, expect a return visit; we will tell you that at the outset.
Paving types
Each material is handled on its own terms, and an older patio may combine two or three of them where it has been extended at different times.
Underfoot
A green film on shaded paving is algae, and on a damp morning it makes the surface treacherous to walk on. Removing it and treating what remains is what makes the patio safer underfoot.
Cleaning also reveals the true state of the joints. Sand that has already gone from the joints is replaced, which beds the slabs firmly again and leaves weeds fewer places to root. Cracked, crumbling mortar joints are different: they need repointing, and we will say so plainly.
After the clean
Once the patio is clean we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment. It soaks into porous stone, targets spores and remaining growth, and helps slow how quickly algae, moss and black spot return.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. Shade, how wet the garden stays, the type of paving and how often it is swept all play a part: a patio under trees close to the river is likely to need attention again sooner than an open, sunny one.
How it runs
Each job moves through five stages in a fixed sequence. What varies from garden to garden is how each stage is carried out.
We identify the stone, check the joints and edges, look closely at the growth and talk through what can realistically be improved, then send a clear quotation setting out the work.
Furniture and pots are moved, and the lawn, borders, doors and walls beside the patio are considered before any water or treatment reaches the stone.
The patio is cleaned at the pressure that suits its material and condition, lifting dirt, algae and weathering without scarring the face or blowing out sound joints.
Black spot receives a specialist application rather than more force. Where the jointing has washed out or broken down, it is re-sanded so the patio is stable underfoot.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on once the surface is clean. Afterwards we go round the patio together, and you hear what was applied and how to look after it.
Worth knowing
Most paving looks markedly better after a careful clean, and where the stone's condition allows we bring back its original appearance. A few things lie outside what cleaning can reach, and you hear about them before work is booked.
Why us
We are based in Marlow and have cleaned patios here, so damp riverside air and heavy tree cover are conditions we deal with all the time.
Black spot and lichen are treated with a specialist application, because pressure alone strips the stone without reaching the growth inside it.
Joints are re-sanded where they need it and the area is left tidy, rather than cleaned and left with open, sandless joints.
Fully insured operatives, a method agreed before work starts and a walk-round at the end so you know exactly what was applied.
Nearby
Our patio work reaches the villages just outside town as well: Marlow Bottom, Little Marlow, Bourne End, Bisham, Medmenham and Hurley. Their gardens are just as damp and sheltered, and they get the same care.

Questions
Usually most of it, yes. The lichen is rooted in the stone, so it takes a specialist application as well as a controlled clean. Spots that have been there a long time may leave a faint grey shadow, and very dense spotting can mean a return visit.
Shaded paving near the Thames dries slowly, and algae establish wherever a surface stays damp. Leaves from mature trees add organic matter to the joints, which helps moss along. North-facing patios and those beneath trees usually show it first.
No. Pressure is one tool among several, and we use as little as the stone needs. Soft or porous paving often does better with a gentler clean and a treatment than with a stronger jet.
Yes. Porcelain barely absorbs water, so dirt and algae sit on top and lift without much force. The real skill is consistency: on a smooth, uniform slab, any patch cleaned differently stands out, and so do grubby joints.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. The darker and damper the spot, the sooner growth reappears. The treatment slows regrowth rather than ending it, so a regular sweep and clear drainage still make a difference.
Sometimes, though not as a matter of course. A sealer can darken stone or give it a sheen, and on some paving it does more harm than good. Once we know what is laid, we will give you a straight view on whether it is worthwhile.
Yes. We are based in Marlow and have carried out patio cleaning in the town, so the damp, tree-lined conditions here are ones we already understand well.
