Sandstone Patio Cleaning, Marlow
Natural sandstone patio cleaning in Marlow — heavy moss, algae and early black spot removed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™, plus a full gutter clean.
Patio Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Marlow Bottom runs along a wooded valley, so many gardens slope and sit in shade for much of the day. Patios here collect run-off, leaf mould and algae. We clean them from the top level down and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
Water runs downhill and carries soil and leaf matter with it. On a sloping plot under trees, the lowest edge of a patio darkens first, the steps turn slippery, and the shaded risers grow green while the treads stay paler. At a free site visit we trace how water moves across your garden, identify the paving and explain the method that suits both.

The valley
Marlow Bottom lies in a long valley just north of Marlow, with woodland along the slopes and established planting around many of its homes. Much of it sits in shade for a good part of the day, and the leaves that fall each autumn break down on whatever they land on. Paving in that setting dries slowly and gathers organic matter quickly.
Gardens often climb or drop away from the house, so a patio may be linked to a lawn, a raised bed or an upper terrace by a few steps. Most homes are established family houses and detached properties, with sandstone, concrete and some porcelain paving behind them. The layout of the garden matters as much as the stone.
Run-off
When rain falls on a sloping garden, it does not stay where it lands. Water arrives from lawns, beds and higher paving, bringing fine soil and leaf residue with it, and drops that load along the lowest edge of the patio or in its drainage channel. That band returns faster than anything else on the terrace.
We plan the clean around those routes, working downhill and controlling loosened dirt so it is removed rather than pushed into the nearest corner. Drainage channels are left clear when we finish.
Leaf mould
Damp leaves left on paving slowly soften and break down. The residue settles into the riven face of sandstone and other textured slabs as a dull brown or grey film, quite different from green algae. It flattens the look of the whole patio and hides the variation in each flag.
A careful clean lifts that layer and brings the colour range back without roughening the surface. The point is to reveal the stone underneath, not to bleach every slab to one shade.
Steps and levels
Steps take foot traffic and rain on their treads, while the risers sit in shade and hold moisture. In a shaded garden they become slippery well before they look dirty, which makes them a priority rather than an afterthought.
We include the steps, edges and connected paths in the plan, cleaning from the upper level down so a lower landing is not left carrying run-off from above. The whole route from the house to the lawn should finish to the same standard.
Black spot and protection
Black spot is a lichen that lives within the pores of natural stone. We deal with the visible marks through controlled cleaning and a specialist application. Once the patio is clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment works into the porous surface to target what remains and helps slow regrowth.
Under trees, spores and leaves keep arriving. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and in a shaded valley garden it tends to sit at the shorter end of that range.
How we work
The stages are the same for every patio. On a garden with levels, the sequence within them matters just as much, and we agree it at the site visit.
We identify the paving, look at the joints, levels and drainage, see where the water runs and explain what result is realistic. A clear quotation follows.
Furniture and pots are moved as agreed, beds and lawns beside the paving are protected, and loose leaves and soil are swept away first.
The paving is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure for the material, starting at the highest level so loosened dirt never runs onto finished areas.
Black spot receives its specialist application, and sand joints that have washed out are refilled once the paving has dried enough.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean surface. We then explain drying, when to put furniture back and how to keep leaf litter off the paving.
Before you book
A thorough clean makes a marked difference, and we restore the original appearance where the condition allows. In a valley garden under trees, though, growth will come back sooner than on an open terrace, so regular sweeping matters as much as the clean itself.
Why us
How water, soil and leaves move across a sloping plot shapes the plan, not just the type of stone underfoot.
Shaded steps and paths are treated as the priority they are, since they turn slippery long before they look dirty.
Pressure is set for the material and its condition, and lichen is treated with a specialist application rather than chased with force.
Fully insured operatives from our Marlow base, just to the south, carry out the work and leave the garden tidy.
Nearby
Our patio cleaning also covers Marlow, Little Marlow, Lane End, Handy Cross and Bisham. Conditions change from one to the next, from exposed higher ground to river damp, so each garden is assessed on site.

Questions
Steps in shade, especially the risers and any treads tucked under planting, hold moisture after rain and grow a film of algae that is slick underfoot. Under trees they become slippery well before they look dirty. Cleaning and treating them reduces that, and sweeping leaves off helps keep it down.
Yes. Steps, risers and connected paths can be included in the agreed work so the whole area finishes consistently. We clean from the top level down so nothing loosened above settles on paving already done.
Run-off. On a sloping garden, rain carries soil and leaf residue down from lawns and beds and leaves it along the lowest edge. That band will always come back sooner than the rest, but keeping drainage clear and beds edged slows it.
Usually they can be significantly reduced. Black spot is a lichen growing in the pores of the stone, so it is treated with a specialist application rather than pressure. Heavily affected paving may need a further treatment rather than forcing an instant result.
Yes, when the method is chosen for limestone. It is generally softer than other paving and is cleaned slowly at low pressure, with treatment used where the growth needs more than water.
Not as long as an open one. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and in a shaded valley garden it tends towards the shorter end. Sweeping leaves off through autumn does more to extend that than cleaning more often.
Yes, where the joints are sand that has washed out or broken down and re-sanding suits the paving. It is done once the patio has dried enough. Cracked rigid pointing is a repair, and we will point it out.
