Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Marlow Bottom follows a dry valley into the wooded hills, and the trees on its slopes shade roofs and drop leaves on them every autumn. We take thick moss off by hand, clean gently and treat the roof afterwards.

The valley
In a valley lined with mature woodland, the roofs that green fastest are the ones that see the least sun and catch the most leaves. Which side of the valley a house stands on, and how close the trees come, often matters more than the tiles themselves. At a free site visit we look at both before recommending a method.

Marlow Bottom roofs
Marlow Bottom stretches north from the edge of Marlow along a dry chalk valley, with no stream on its floor and woodland climbing the slopes on either side. Houses line the valley road and the side roads that run up from it. Depending on which side of the valley a home stands, the hillside can cut off the sun for part of the day, and cold, damp air settles along the valley floor on still nights.
Most of the homes are established detached and family houses built through the twentieth century, along with later replacements and extensions. Concrete tiles are common, and on shaded plots they can carry moss cushions so thick that the tile pattern disappears. Clay tiles and slate turn up on some properties too, and many gardens have a tree or hedge close enough to drop debris on the roof.
Leaf litter
Leaves, beech mast and twigs from the wooded slopes land on roofs every autumn, and not all of them blow or wash away. They lodge along the tile courses, behind ridges and in valleys, where they rot down into a thin, damp layer of compost. Moss takes root in that layer readily, and once it has established, it traps more debris in turn.
This is why roofs in a wooded setting often carry the heaviest growth along the lower courses and at the edges, where material collects, rather than evenly across the slope. It is also why the gutters below them fill so quickly.
Heavy moss
When a roof is carpeted in moss, it is tempting to think only a powerful jet will shift it. In practice the reverse is true. The bulk is lifted by hand, course by course, so the cleaning that follows has little left to do and can be a low-pressure clean or soft wash suited to the tile.
High pressure aimed at a heavily mossed concrete roof can strip what remains of the tile's surface finish and force water up under the laps. The amount of moss tells us how long hand removal will take; the condition of the tiles tells us how the cleaning stage should be set.
Aspect
A valley gives its two sides different days. Homes on one slope catch the morning sun and lose it earlier in the afternoon; homes on the other wait until later for it. Add tall trees on the plot or the hillside behind, and one pitch of a roof can stay damp almost all day through the winter months.
We note those patterns at the site visit because they shape both the work and the aftercare. The pitch that dries slowest usually carries the most moss, needs the most time on the day and is the first place where regrowth will show.
After cleaning
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on every roof we clean, applied once the surface is clear and conditions are settled and free of frost. It works into the texture of the tile to target the spores and remnants of growth left behind, and it helps reduce how fast the roof recolonises.
Under trees, protection is likely to sit towards the lower end of its typical 12 to 24 months, while a sunnier, more open roof will often last longer. Keeping leaf litter off the roof and out of the gutters in autumn helps it along. As the period ends, we can reassess.
How the job runs
Each roof is taken through the same sequence. The equipment, the pressure and the time spent on each pitch are set by what we see at the visit.
We check the roof from the ground and, where useful, by drone, noting the tile, the depth of moss, the trees around it and the safest way to reach each pitch.
We explain the method we propose and why, and set it out in a defined statement of works, so you know exactly what is included.
From access equipment beside the roof, operatives lift the moss by hand, working down each pitch and paying attention to the lower courses where debris gathers.
The tiles are cleaned at low pressure or soft washed to suit their condition, then treated with Chiltern EverGuard™ once the weather is settled and frost-free.
Leaf litter and moss are cleared from the gutters and the downpipes are checked. The project lead then takes you through the finished roof and the aftercare.
Worth knowing
In a wooded valley, a clean roof will not stay clean for ever. Treatment slows the return of growth, but leaves keep falling and the shade does not move, so a roof here is best thought of as something to look after over time rather than fix once.
Why us
Our base in Marlow is a short drive away, and we are familiar with how wooded, shaded settings like this one affect a roof.
Thick growth is lifted by hand before any cleaning, so the tiles are never subjected to the force needed to blast it away.
Moss and leaf litter that come down are cleared from the gutters and the downpipes are checked before we leave.
Fully insured operatives working from suitable access equipment, with a project lead accountable for the work from start to handover.

Questions
Shade and leaf fall together. The wooded valley sides keep many roofs out of direct sun for part of the day, and leaves that lodge on the tiles rot into a damp layer that moss roots into easily. Roofs with that combination green faster than those on open ground.
Not with force. The thick moss is lifted by hand, working carefully along each course so the tiles are not damaged, and the roof is then cleaned at low pressure or soft washed. What remains in the surface is dealt with by the treatment.
Yes. Leaves and twigs that lodge on the tiles break down into a damp layer that feeds moss and holds water. Clearing them from the roof and gutters each autumn is one of the most useful things you can do to slow regrowth after a clean.
Yes, with the right method. After hand removal, concrete tiles are cleaned at the lowest pressure that works on them. High pressure can strip the remaining surface finish and push water under the laps, which is why we do not rely on it.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and roofs beneath mature trees in a shaded valley usually sit towards the shorter end. Keeping leaves off the roof and out of the gutters helps the treatment do its job.
Yes. Moss and leaf litter coming off the roof gather at the eaves, so the gutters are cleared and the downpipes checked as standard. Under trees, they often hold a good deal of leaf litter before we even start.
