Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Medmenham is a small riverside village of cottages and country homes, with the Thames on one side and wooded hills on the other. We remove moss by hand, control where the water goes and treat each roof afterwards.

Riverside care
On a riverside plot, where the rinse water and loosened moss end up matters as much as how the roof is cleaned. Gardens, ponds, planting and the Thames itself are all close at hand. At a free site visit we plan the direction of run-off and how debris will be collected, alongside the method for the roof.

Medmenham roofs
Medmenham sits on the north bank of the Thames between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, a small village with the Chiltern hills and their woodland rising behind it. Damp air off the river, mature trees and large, sheltered gardens keep many roofs wet for long periods, and the rural setting means leaves and seed arrive from every direction.
Its buildings span a long period. Older cottages in flint and brick with clay tiles and tall chimneys sit alongside period houses, later family homes and larger country properties with outbuildings. Many of the older roofs have been patched over generations, with replacement tiles, rebuilt ridges and mortar repairs that stay hidden under moss until the roof is clean.
Run-off
Cleaning a roof produces dirty water and a good deal of loosened moss, and on a property near the Thames or above a pond, both need a plan. We decide in advance where run-off will be directed, protect planting and features below, and collect as much of the moss as practical rather than letting it wash over the edge.
The treatment is applied carefully to the cleaned roof only, in settled weather, so it stays on the surface it is meant for. The gutters are cleared afterwards, so loosened moss is not left to wash out in the next heavy rain.
Tile laps
A tiled roof works because each course overlaps the one below, so rain runs down and off. Cleaning water should follow the same route. Aimed up the slope or into the laps, even a modest jet can push water beneath the tiles, which is why direction and angle matter as much as pressure.
We work down the roof from a position close to the surface, using hand removal and low pressure or a soft wash, and take particular care at the ridge, the verges and the junctions around chimneys. Older roofs with lime mortar at the ridge and verges need a lighter touch again.
Old repairs
Years of moss and dark staining tend to blend everything on a roof into one colour. Once it is removed, the differences come back: a tile replaced decades ago in a slightly different clay, a ridge re-bedded in newer mortar, a patch where a chimney was repaired. Cleaning does not cause these; they were simply hidden.
We mention this at the site visit so the finished roof is judged as the old roof it is. Where cleaning shows up cracked tiles, tired flashings or failing mortar, we point them out so a roofer can deal with them, and keep that work separate from ours.
Protection
With the river close by and trees all around, spores are never far away. That is why every roof we clean receives the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment once it is clean and the weather is settled and frost-free. It targets residual growth and spores in the surface and helps reduce how quickly the roof greens over again.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. Here, sheltered pitches under trees and those facing the river are likely to sit towards the shorter end, and we can look at the roof again as the period draws to a close.
Order of work
Each stage is agreed before the work starts, including how the area below the roof will be protected and where the water will go.
We inspect the roof from the ground and by drone where helpful, looking at the covering, chimneys, ridges and past repairs, and plan the run-off with you.
You receive our recommended method, the reasoning behind it and how the surroundings will be protected, all set out in a defined statement of works with a clear quotation.
On the day, planting, ponds and features below are protected and access equipment is set up so operatives can work close to the roof without standing on it.
Moss is lifted by hand, the roof is cleaned working down the slope at low pressure or by soft wash, and Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied when conditions allow.
Gutters are cleared of fallen moss, downpipes checked and the area below tidied. The project lead then explains what was done and what to look out for.
Before you book
Cleaning brings a marked improvement and helps the roof shed water as it should, but it does not mend anything. On an older cottage roof, some honest weathering will always remain, and that is part of its character.
Why us
Where rinse water and debris will go is decided before work begins, with planting, ponds and the area below the roof protected.
Operatives work from access equipment beside the roof, never on it, so laps, ridges and older tiles are handled with control.
We tell you what cleaning will improve, what it will reveal and what needs a roofer, without dressing anything up.
Fully insured, with a project lead who stays accountable for the work and hands the roof back to you in person.

We also clean roofs nearby in Hambleden, Frieth and Fingest inland, and in Marlow, Bisham and Hurley along the river. Most share the same mix of mature trees, damp air and older buildings.

Questions
Not when the work is planned properly, which is why we plan it at the site visit. Run-off is directed away from water and planting, moss is collected rather than washed off the edge, and the treatment is applied carefully to the cleaned roof in settled weather.
Yes, with a light touch. We work down the roof at low pressure, keep water off the mortar at the ridge and verges, and check its condition first. If the mortar is already loose or failing, we recommend a roofer before cleaning.
Because they are different. Replacement tiles, rebuilt ridges and old repairs often use slightly different materials, and the moss had been hiding the contrast. Cleaning does not create these variations; it simply removes what was covering them.
Yes. The tiles around chimney stacks and wall junctions are cleaned with care, usually by hand, and we keep water away from the flashings. Any visible wear to the leadwork or mortar is pointed out for a roofer.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. A roof that faces the river or sits beneath trees tends to be at the shorter end, while a more open roof often lasts longer. We can reassess as the period ends.
No. Cleaning removes growth that holds water against the tiles and helps the roof shed rain freely, but it does not repair cracked tiles, failed flashings or worn mortar, which are the usual causes of leaks.
Not for moss removal, which can go ahead through most of the year. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment needs settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we may clean first and return to treat.
