Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Berkshire
Hurley sits between the Thames and open countryside, so its roofs take damp from one side and wind-blown debris from the other. We clean old clay and later concrete alike with care, and finish every roof with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
Many roofs in the village are older than they look from the lane. Ridge tiles bedded in mortar, mortared verges and handmade clay tiles all weather with age, and some are more fragile than the moss on them suggests. We identify those details at a free site visit, so the method is set around them rather than discovered halfway through the job.

Hurley roofs
Hurley lies on the Thames a short way upstream of Marlow, with open fields and countryside around it. That setting works on a roof from two directions: damp air off the river keeps slopes wet, while the wind carries leaves, seed and organic dust in off the land. Exposed roofs here pick up lichen and moss sooner than the same tiles in a sheltered street.
The housing mixes village homes and period cottages with riverside houses and larger country properties along narrow private lanes. Older buildings often carry handmade clay tiles and mortar-bedded ridges, later ones concrete. Garages, porches and outbuildings add roofs of their own, and on many properties they are the ones that look most neglected.
Mortar and ridges
Ridge tiles, hips and verges on older roofs are often bedded in mortar, and mortar weathers. It can crack, crumble at the edges or loosen behind a ridge tile without that being obvious from the ground. Moss tends to settle along exactly those lines, so it has to be removed from them carefully.
We check the bedding at the site visit, lift the moss from mortar lines by hand and keep any cleaning there gentle. Where mortar is already failing, we tell you before work begins; repointing is a job for a roofer, and cleaning is no substitute for it.
Clay tiles
Handmade clay tiles vary in thickness, colour and finish, and after many decades on a roof some become porous and brittle at the edges. Pressure that a modern concrete tile shrugs off can strip their surface or crack them outright. On these roofs, moss is removed by hand and the clay is soft washed, letting the treatment do the work rather than the water.
Their natural tonal variation is part of what makes them attractive, and we do not try to clean it away.
Smaller roofs
Secondary roofs often face a different way from the house, sit beneath its higher slopes or stand under trees at the edge of the garden. They catch more run-off and less sun, and they frequently look worse than the main roof as a result.
Treatment
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to every roof we clean, including the smaller ones. It reaches into the surface to target spores and remaining growth, and it helps reduce how quickly moss, algae and lichen re-establish.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, varying with exposure, shade and the covering itself. It needs settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we take the moss off and return to apply it. We email as the protection period ends to offer a free reassessment.
How it works
Every roof follows the same five stages. On a village or country property, access along private lanes is settled at the first of them.
We look at the roof, the mortar details and the lane access, using a drone where appropriate and showing you live footage of tiles you cannot see from below.
You receive a report with our recommended method for each roof, the reasons for it and a defined statement of works, together with a clear quotation.
Working from towers, platforms or poles rather than the roof itself, operatives lift the moss by hand, taking extra care along ridges, verges and around older clay.
Each roof is cleaned in the way its tiles can stand, from a soft wash on fragile clay to a low-pressure clean on concrete, followed by the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment.
Moss is cleared from the gutters, lower roofs and paths, downpipes are checked, and the project lead explains what was done and what the aftercare involves.
Plain facts
Taking off the moss reveals the roof as it really is. Weathered mortar, older repairs, replacement tiles that do not quite match and the natural colour range of clay all become easier to see. That is useful to know about, but none of it is changed by cleaning, and repairs remain a separate job for a roofer.
Why us
Our base is in Marlow, a short way down the Thames, so river damp and countryside exposure are conditions we work with all the time.
Mortar ridges, verges and handmade clay are identified before work begins and handled gently, with any defects reported rather than disturbed.
Porches, bays, garages and outbuildings are planned into the same sequence, so the whole property looks cared for, not just the house.
Fully insured operatives on proper access equipment, a briefing before the work and a handover from the project lead when it is done.
Nearby
We also clean roofs in Hurley Bottom and Burchetts Green, along the river in Medmenham and Bisham, and in Remenham on the far bank. Marlow, where we are based, is a short way downstream.

Questions
Yes, with care. Moss is lifted by hand and the clay is soft washed rather than pressure cleaned, because age leaves handmade tiles porous and sometimes brittle. If they are too fragile to clean, we say so at the site visit.
No, not when sound mortar is handled properly. Moss is removed from mortar lines by hand and any cleaning there is gentle. Where bedding is already cracked or loose, we point it out before work starts.
Yes, where access is safe. Smaller roofs are assessed for their own covering and condition and can be included in the same visit, so the whole property is finished together.
Exposure works both ways here. Damp air from the river keeps roofs wet, and wind off open countryside brings leaves, seed and organic dust that feed growth. Together they let moss and lichen establish quickly.
Usually, yes. Turning, parking and where access equipment can stand are checked at the site visit, so the crew arrives with a plan rather than working it out on the morning.
Not always. Natural colour variation in clay, older repairs and some residual staining can remain, and treated growth often fades gradually afterwards. We aim for a clear improvement suited to the roof's age.
Typically between 12 and 24 months, depending on exposure, shade, the tile and maintenance. As the period draws to an end we email you and offer a free reassessment of the roof.
