Roof Cleaning · 10 towns
Berkshire's roofs stand on low Thames valley ground and, further south, among pine and heath. From Bisham, across the river from our Marlow base, to Bracknell and Wokingham, we survey each roof, clear it by hand and clean it gently.

The county's roofs
Apart from the wooded slopes above the river at Bisham and Cookham Dean, most of the Berkshire towns we cover stand on lower ground: beside the Thames, the Loddon and the Kennet, or on the sandy heathland towards Ascot and Bracknell. That brings wet meadows, morning mist and, in the south-east, conifer woodland whose needles find their way into every gutter. Roofs here weather in their own way, and we clean them accordingly.
Rivers and meadows
The Thames forms the county's northern edge past Hurley, Cookham, Maidenhead and Windsor. The Loddon reaches it below Twyford and the Kennet joins it at Reading, and all three are lined with water meadows, flood ground and, in places, flooded gravel workings that now sit as lakes. Open water and wet grass keep the air around nearby houses humid, and mist settles over the flat land on calm mornings.
For a roof, that means slow drying. A pitch facing the river or the meadows can stay damp for much of the day, which is all algae needs to spread and moss needs to root. On these sites we also plan where rinse water will go before work starts, so that nothing reaches a bank, a pond or a lake edge.
Heath and conifer
Around Ascot and Bracknell the soils turn sandy, and the landscape is one of heath, pine and large areas of conifer woodland. Conifers behave differently from the broadleaved trees further north. Instead of one heavy autumn drop, they shed needles across much of the year, and those needles are fine enough to blow onto roofs from trees some distance away.
Once on a roof they knit into a dense mat in valleys, behind chimneys and at the back of gutters, holding water against the tiles and giving moss a ready foothold. That is why we clear needles by hand along with the moss before any washing begins, and why emptying the gutters properly at the end matters so much on these properties.
Roofs by era
The Great Western Railway shaped much of Berkshire's housing. Reading, Maidenhead and Twyford all grew around their stations, and Victorian streets of red and patterned brick under Welsh slate remain a familiar sight, alongside Windsor's dense period terraces. Bracknell was designated a New Town after the war, so its planned neighbourhoods are largely post-war, and newer developments have since spread around Wokingham and across the county.
Where we work
The towns below each have their own roof cleaning page, written around the roofs found there. The note beside each shows the conditions that most often shape our work in that place.

Victorian streets, post-war homes and recent growth, where an extension or garage roof often greens faster than the main house above it.

Learn Moreabout Roof Cleaning in WokinghamThe process
A riverside cottage and a post-war semi go through the same five stages. Only the method inside each stage changes.
We inspect the roof from the ground and by drone, share the footage with you, and check parking, gates and where a platform can be set up.
A written report sets out what we found, the method recommended for each roof section and a statement of exactly what the work includes.
Operatives work from access equipment as close to the tiles as they can, never standing on them, and lift moss, needles and debris by hand.
Low pressure or a soft wash takes off the remaining algae and lichen. Gutters are then emptied and downpipes checked so the rainwater route runs clear.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied on a dry, frost-free day, and the project lead explains what was done and how to look after the roof.
Our approach
From Marlow, Bisham, Hurley and Cookham are a short drive away, and the rest of the county we cover is a straightforward journey.
Needles, leaves and moss come off by hand first, so the clean that follows can be gentle and the gutters are not left holding it all.
Near rivers, ponds and lakes we direct rinse water away from banks and planting rather than letting it find its own way.
We are fully insured and work from access equipment, so nobody walks across slate, clay or concrete tiles at any stage.

Questions
Not directly, but they hold moisture. Needles mat together in valleys, behind chimneys and at the back of gutters, keep those areas wet and give moss a foothold. Clearing them by hand before washing, and emptying the gutters afterwards, removes that damp layer.
Yes. Those towns are further from our Marlow base than Cookham or Bisham, but they are within the area we serve. Book a free site visit and we will confirm the details for your address.
Usually, yes. Many concrete tiles from the post-war decades are structurally sound but have lost their surface coating, so they hold algae and lichen more readily. Cleaning removes the growth and treatment slows its return, although colour that has faded from the tile itself cannot be brought back.
Yes. Open water and wet meadows raise the humidity around nearby houses and encourage morning mist, so roofs facing them dry slowly and green sooner. We also plan rinse water more carefully on those sites.
No, not when the work is done carefully. Older slates can be brittle and their nails tired, so we clean from a close working position at low pressure and never put weight on the slates. Any that are cracked or slipped are reported to you.
It typically protects for between 12 and 24 months, depending on the setting, the roof and how it is maintained. Steady needle fall tends to shorten that, so keeping gutters and valleys clear between visits helps the treatment do its work.
