Roof Cleaning · Berkshire
Windsor's older streets are full of roofs with more going on than two plain slopes: bays, rear additions, chimneys and lead-lined junctions. We clean them from the top down, with care at every detail, and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

The approach
Where a roof steps down over a bay, a back addition and a porch, moss loosened from the top lands on the roofs below. Cleaning in the wrong order means doing parts twice or leaving debris on a finished slope. We plan the sequence at the site visit, working from the highest roof to the lowest, and agree where the loosened material will be collected.

Windsor roofs
The town grew outward from the Castle over many centuries, and the railways brought a further surge of building in the nineteenth century. Clewer, one of the oldest settlements in the area, was gradually drawn in as Windsor spread. The result is a dense mix of period terraces, older brick houses, established suburban streets and newer housing, often within a short walk of one another.
Many of the older homes have the busy rooflines typical of their era: slate or clay over the main house, small hipped roofs over bay windows, lean-to roofs on rear additions and tall chimney stacks with leadwork around them. The Thames, the parks and plenty of mature garden trees keep some of those slopes shaded and slow to dry, which is where moss gathers first.
Sequence
On a roofline with several levels, the order of work matters as much as the method. We start at the ridge of the main roof and work downwards, so moss lifted from above falls onto roofs that have not yet been cleaned rather than ones that have. Lower roofs such as porches, bays and rear additions are then cleaned in turn, often with a gentler finish because their coverings and pitches differ.
Loosened material is collected as we go rather than left sitting on shallow or flat roofs, where it would hold water and start the problem again.
Ridges and hips
Ridges and hips are where wind, shade and mortar meet, and moss often settles in a line along them, making the whole roof look heavier. On older roofs the ridge tiles may still be bedded in mortar that has weathered with age. Moss is lifted from these lines by hand and the area cleaned gently, because force aimed at tired mortar can loosen it.
If a bedding joint is already cracked or a ridge tile is loose, we point it out rather than clean over it. Repointing and rebedding are work for a roofer.
Leadwork
Lead flashings around chimneys, abutments, dormers and valleys keep water out at the weakest points of a roof. They are softer than tile, they are dressed to shape and their laps must stay undisturbed. We work around them with a light hand, removing the moss and debris that sits against them without directing water or pressure into the joints.
Aftercare
With the roof clean, it is back in the same shade and damp that let moss settle there in the first place. That is why we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment to every roof we clean. It reaches spores and remnants of growth in the surface that cleaning can miss and helps reduce how quickly they return.
Expect protection of typically between 12 and 24 months, depending on how sheltered and damp each slope is. It is applied in settled, frost-free weather, and we contact you by email to offer a free reassessment as that period ends.
Our process
The stages are the same for every roof we clean. On a detailed roofline, the planning in the first two matters most.
We look at each roof level from the ground and, where appropriate, by drone, showing you the live footage. Leadwork, ridges, chimneys and room for an access tower are all noted.
Our report sets out the order of work, the method for each covering and the reasoning, together with a defined statement of works and a clear quotation.
From towers and platforms beside the roof, never standing on it, operatives take the bulk of the moss off by hand, starting at the main ridge and working towards the eaves.
Each roof is cleaned at the lowest pressure its covering needs, or soft washed, with extra care at flashings. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once the weather is settled.
Moss and debris that came down are cleared from every gutter run, downpipes are checked, and the project lead explains the work, the treatment and the aftercare.
Before you book
Cleaning makes a real difference to a roof that has been green for a long time, but it does not reverse the age of the materials. Weathering on old concrete tiles, colour variation in clay and the marks of earlier repairs may all remain, and a few may become easier to see.
Roofing defects such as split lead, cracked tiles or loose ridges are separate from the clean, and we will tell you where we see them.
Why choose us
Multi-level roofs are cleaned from the top down so debris never lands on a finished section, and every roof level is left clear.
Flashings, ridges and old bedding are worked around with a light hand, and defects are reported to you rather than disguised or patched.
Operatives use access towers, platforms and poles to get near the tiles without standing on them, which protects the covering and improves precision.
Fully insured operatives, a what-to-expect briefing before the work and a full handover from the project lead at the end.

We also clean roofs in Clewer and Dedworth on the west side of town, in Old Windsor and Datchet along the river, and across the bridge in Eton and Eton Wick. The housing changes from street to street, so each roof is seen in person.

Questions
Yes, where access is safe. Each roof level is planned into the order of work, cleaned from the top down and cleared of debris, so a finished lower roof is not covered again by moss from above.
No, not when it is handled properly. Lead is worked around with a light touch, without water or pressure forced into its laps. If a flashing is already split or lifting, we show you rather than clean over it.
Ridges and hips catch wind-blown spores, and the shaded side of a ridge line stays damp. On older roofs, weathered mortar gives moss an easy foothold, so a line of growth along the top is very common.
Yes, in most cases. Slates and their fixings are checked at the site visit. Where they are sound, they are cleaned with close control and low pressure; where a roof is too fragile, we say so before anything is agreed.
No. We work from access towers, platforms and poles, as close to the surface as practical without standing on it. That keeps weight off the covering and gives better control around ridges and leadwork.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and a roof under mature trees or in deep shade is likely to be towards the shorter end. As that period draws to a close we email to offer a free reassessment.
Yes, as standard. The moss we take off ends up at the eaves, so every gutter run below the work is cleared and the downpipes checked before we leave.
