Soft Wash Treatment · Berkshire
Older Windsor frontages are full of ledges, surrounds, string courses and plinths, and those details hold growth long after the open wall looks clean. We soft wash the whole elevation at low pressure, details included, testing first where a finish is uncertain.

Detail matters
Wash only the broad face of a wall and the dark lines usually stay: along the top of a sill, under a string course, around a window surround. Those are the places where water lingers and growth hangs on. Our soft wash plan covers them as part of the elevation, adjusting how the solution is applied to each shape and material.

Windsor homes
Windsor developed around the Castle from the medieval period, and much of its later growth followed the arrival of the railways in the nineteenth century, absorbing older settlements such as Clewer along the way. Period houses and terraces now sit within reach of established suburban streets and more recent housing.
Older frontages tend to carry more relief: projecting brick courses, stone or rendered surrounds, deep reveals and plinths. Mature trees, gardens and the Thames keep parts of many properties shaded and slow to dry, and that is where algae and lichen take hold first.
Architectural details
Every projection on a wall gives water somewhere to sit. The top of a sill, the underside of a string course and the edges of a window surround catch rain, dust and organic matter, stay damp after the face has dried and grow algae in narrow bands.
We include these features in the treatment plan and adjust how the solution reaches them, because a fine stone surround and the brick beside it may not want identical handling. Leaving them out is how an elevation ends up clean in the middle and dark at every edge.
Vertical streaks
Water leaving a parapet, coping or balcony edge often follows the same line down the wall each time it rains, and that line darkens faster than anything around it. Treating only the bottom of the streak leaves its source in place.
Where access and the agreed scope allow, we treat the upper detail along with the stain beneath it. If the real cause is a failed drip edge or a blocked outlet, we say so, because no amount of cleaning will stop water that is going the wrong way.
Timber and cladding
Cladding can develop a green film on shaded elevations. The boards may be sturdy, but joints, seals, trims and fixings are part of the system and should never take uncontrolled pressure. A low-pressure solution deals with the growth while leaving those junctions undisturbed.
Timber needs a different expectation from render or brick. Sunlight and weather grey it naturally, and an old coating may already have failed. Soft washing removes growth; it does not reverse greying or restore a finish that has worn through.
Testing first
Some walls have been painted more than once, carry an unusual finish or have weathered so far that the original material is hard to identify by eye. In those cases a small test area shows how the surface responds before the whole elevation is committed to a method. It takes a little longer and removes the guesswork.
Our method
Five stages, in the same order every time, with the detail inside each one set by what we found on your walls.
We identify the materials, the growth, the state of any paint, and the ledges, trims and joints that need particular care, then agree the area to be treated.
Lawns, borders, pots, glass and paintwork are covered, wetted down or otherwise protected, since anything applied to an upper wall eventually runs downwards.
The solution is spread evenly across the elevation and its details, then left long enough to work on the algae, mould and lichen.
The wall is rinsed down and the ledges, corners, trims and lower courses are finished, so that nothing is left outlining the cleaned face.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on once the surface is clean, and we check the result with you, separating weathering and defects from anything cleaning can still improve.
Before you book
Firmly attached lichen does not always disappear in one visit. Where the treatment has reached it, residual staining can keep fading as the weather carries away what is left, which is far kinder to an old finish than chasing an instant result with pressure.
Cleaning also uncovers. Faded paint, patched render and old repairs can look more obvious once the film over them has gone. That is the wall's existing condition, and repairs remain a job for the relevant trade.
Why us
Sills, surrounds, copings and plinths are included in the plan, so the finished elevation reads as one clean surface rather than a clean centre.
Where a finish is uncertain, a small test area tells us how it responds before the whole wall is treated.
We use the least pressure and the mildest solution that achieve the result, because an older frontage gains nothing from extra force.
Fully insured, with planting, glass and paintwork protected and a plain explanation of what was done before we leave.
Nearby
Our visits also reach Clewer and Dedworth on the western side, Old Windsor and Datchet along the river, and Eton and Eton Wick across the bridge. The same attention to detail applies wherever the property sits.

Questions
Yes, where the stone and the growth on it suit soft washing. Surrounds are treated as part of the elevation but handled on their own terms, and marks that are mineral or very old weathering are left alone rather than chased.
Yes, on many timber and composite boards, subject to the coating and its condition. It removes growth but cannot undo natural greying or a worn-out finish, and we assess both before recommending it.
Because some finishes cannot be judged reliably by eye, especially walls painted several times or heavily weathered. A small test shows how the surface responds, so the whole elevation is not committed to a method that might not suit it.
Established lichen can take a while to let go. Once treated, residual staining often continues to fade as rain and weather carry the dead growth away, which is gentler on an old finish than forcing it off on the day.
Yes. Glass, frames and painted joinery are wetted down or covered before the solution is applied, then rinsed afterwards. On period houses with original windows we take particular care around older paint and putty.
Yes. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once the surface is clean. It helps reduce how quickly growth returns, and protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on shade, moisture, surface and upkeep.
Not necessarily. Soft washing targets algae, mould and lichen. Salt deposits, rust and old paint residue have other causes and may need a different approach, which we talk through at the site visit.
