Soft Wash Treatment · Berkshire
Plenty of Maidenhead houses carry more than one finish: red brick at the front, a rendered extension at the back, a painted wall down the side. We soft wash each one at low pressure, in the way that suits it.

How we see it
The green and dark marks on an exterior wall are usually algae, mould and lichen rather than ordinary dirt. A pressure washer knocks some of it off the surface and leaves the rest in the texture. Soft washing treats the growth itself: a solution goes on at low pressure, is left to act, and is then rinsed away.

Maidenhead homes
Maidenhead grew quickly once the Great Western Railway arrived, and many of its Victorian and Edwardian streets are built in red brick, some with terracotta detailing around doors and windows. Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green and Cox Green add inter-war and post-war family houses, and newer developments carry on from there.
Over the decades a great many of those homes have been extended, converted or refurbished, so original brickwork often stands beside a rendered extension or a painted side wall. Add the river, mature gardens and narrow side passages, and you get walls that stay damp in some places and dry quickly in others.
One house, several finishes
An extended house might present three surfaces on a single elevation: the original brick, a rendered addition and a painted plinth or side wall. They take up water differently, hold growth differently and tolerate rinsing differently. On brick, algae tends to settle in shaded mortar joints and under sills; on pale render it spreads as broad green patches across the face.
So at the site visit we mark out where one finish ends and the next begins. The solution, the time it is left to act and the rinse are then set for each area rather than run across the whole house at one setting.
Render
Render is the surface soft washing suits best. A light-coloured finish shows a green film early, and on a textured coat the growth sits in small recesses that a concentrated jet tends to miss while it scours the raised parts. A low-pressure solution reaches into the texture and works on the growth itself.
Where render is cracked, hollow or coming away, we point it out before anything is applied. Cleaning improves how render looks; it does not mend it, and a weak patch is better left to a renderer.
Brick and paint
Brick can carry algae low down near the ground, in shaded joints and beneath window sills. Other marks have different causes: rust from old fixings, historic staining, natural variation in the brick itself. A stronger solution will not shift those, so we work out what each mark is before deciding what to treat.
Painted masonry depends on the paint. A sound coating cleans up well and shows its true colour again; a flaking or chalky one cannot be stabilised by cleaning and may look patchier once the growth has gone.
Easy to miss
The wall people look at is rarely the one in the worst state. Passages beside fences, walls screened by planting and elevations facing away from the sun stay wet longer after rain, and growth becomes well established there before anyone notices it.
On the day
The order of work stays the same from house to house. What changes is how each stage is set for the finishes on your walls.
At the free site visit we identify each finish, the growth on it, the state of any paint or render and anything nearby that needs protecting, then explain what we recommend.
Planting, lawns, glass and paintwork are covered or wetted down before any solution goes on, and adjoining patios and paths are worked around so nothing loosened lands on them.
The solution is applied at low pressure, area by area, and given time to act on the algae, mould and lichen instead of being forced off with pressure.
Every finish is rinsed in the way it tolerates, with attention to sills, corners and the lower wall. The planting is rinsed off at the same time.
With the surface clean we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, then walk you round the result and point out anything that cleaning was never going to change.
Worth knowing
The aim is a wall that looks cared for, not one that looks freshly built. Once the growth has gone, a few things the dirt was hiding can become easier to see.
Why us
Brick, render and painted masonry on the same house each get the method and rinse that suits them, rather than one setting for everything.
We are based in Marlow, a short way up the river, and have worked in Maidenhead before, so its mix of housing is familiar ground.
If a mark is rust, salts or old paint rather than growth, we tell you at the site visit instead of treating it again and again.
Fully insured operatives, with planting, glass and paintwork protected before anything is applied and the area left tidy when we go.
Nearby
We also cover the places around the town: Bray and Holyport to the south, Taplow on the far bank of the Thames, and Furze Platt and Pinkneys Green on the road towards Cookham. Housing there varies just as widely, so each property is assessed on its own.

Questions
Yes. We treat it as separate working areas. The solution, the time it is left and the rinse are set for each finish, and we take particular care where one meets the other, such as where a rendered extension joins older brickwork.
Not always. Algae, mould and lichen respond well. Rust from old fixings, historic staining and natural colour variation in the brick are not growth, so they may remain. We tell you which is which before any work starts.
Yes, if the paint is sound. Low pressure and a careful rinse suit a well-bonded coating. Flaking or chalky paint needs a decorator rather than a clean, and we would rather say so at the site visit than wash over it.
Yes, when it is part of the agreed area. Narrow passages and screened walls are usually where growth is heaviest, because they get little sun or airflow after rain, so leaving them out rarely makes sense.
That depends on shade, moisture, the direction the wall faces and the planting beside it. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment applied at the end helps slow regrowth, and its protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months.
Planting is covered or wetted down before any solution is applied, and it is rinsed off along with the wall afterwards. Near borders, pots and lawns we keep the application tight to the surface being treated.
No. It is cleaning, not repair. It removes growth from the surface, but cracks, hollow patches and failing coatings need a renderer or decorator. Where we see them, we point them out before any solution goes on.
