Solar Panel Cleaning · Berkshire
Many Maidenhead homes carry solar panels on roofs far older than the array itself. We clean the glass with de-ionised water and a soft brush on a water-fed pole, worked from the ground, so the tiles around it are left undisturbed.

The approach
Solar glass is tough, but the roof around it often is not. Old clay tiles crack under a boot, slates shift and ridge lines can be fragile. That is why we clean panels from the ground with a water-fed pole wherever access allows, using de-ionised water and a soft brush, and never treat the array or the tiles beside it as somewhere to stand.

Maidenhead homes
Maidenhead grew quickly once the Great Western Railway arrived, and much of its older housing dates from the Victorian and Edwardian decades that followed. Red brick and clay tile are typical of those streets, and plenty of the roofs have been weathering for well over a century. Solar panels added more recently now sit among those tiles.
Beyond the older streets, Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green and the wider town add post-war family houses and modern developments, usually with concrete tiles and simpler pitches. Thames-side damp and mature gardens touch all of them. Shaded roofs grow moss, and fragments of it wash down the slope until they settle against the lower frame of the panels.
Older roofs
An array fitted to an older roof is fixed through or hooked beneath tiles that may be brittle with age. Walking across them to reach the panels risks cracking one or nudging it out of line, and a cracked tile beside a mounting bracket is exactly the kind of fault that lets water in.
A water-fed pole lets the operative stay on the ground and still reach the glass without touching the covering at all. Where the pole cannot reach a panel safely, we say so at the free site visit rather than improvise something on the day.
Moss from above
On a mossy roof, the slope above an array keeps feeding it. Rain loosens small pieces of moss and grit from the tiles, carries them down the glass and leaves them against the bottom frame, where they hold water and begin to grow. Over time a green line forms along the lowest edge of each row.
We clear that line with the brush on every clean, along with debris caught in the frame corners. What a solar visit does not include is cleaning the roof itself. If the tiles above are heavily mossed, we will tell you, because that is separate work with its own method.
The water
The water we use has been through a de-ionising system, which strips out the dissolved minerals that ordinary tap water carries. Those minerals are what leave white spots on glass as it dries. Without them, the panels can be rinsed and left to dry on their own, with nothing wiped or towelled across them.
There are no detergents, no chemicals and no high pressure. Bird mess and pollen film are loosened by the brush and the water alone, with extra passes wherever a deposit is stubborn.
Our method
The order is the same on every property. What we check first is how the array is fixed and what the roof around it is made of.
We check the panels, frames, seals and fixings, the pitch and the tiles around them, then confirm whether every panel can be reached from the ground with the pole.
De-ionised water runs through the soft brush head as it works across each panel, loosening pollen, dust and bird mess without any detergent or pressure.
Moss, grit and leaf fragments gathered along the bottom edge and in the corners are brushed out, so rain can run off the glass freely again.
A final rinse of pure water carries away whatever the brush has lifted. The panels then dry by themselves, so nothing is wiped across the glass.
We walk you through the finished array and mention anything we noticed about seals, fixings or cracked tiles nearby, so a specialist can take a look if needed.
Worth knowing
Cleaning takes off the dirt, droppings and moss that sit on the glass and shade it. How much difference that makes on your array depends on how dirty it was and where it sits, so we do not put a figure on it.
Why us
We are based in Marlow, a short drive upriver, and have worked in Maidenhead, so we know its older brick-and-tile streets and newer estates alike.
The pole puts the brush on the glass while the operative stays on the ground, so fragile tiles around the mounting brackets are never stepped on.
De-ionised water only. Nothing runs off into the gutters, the borders or the drains except clean water and the dirt it carried.
Fully insured operatives, the access agreed with you at the site visit, and a walk-through of the finished array before we leave.
Nearby
We also clean arrays in the places around the town: Bray and Holyport to the south, Cox Green to the west, and Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green and Taplow close by. Each has its own mix of older and newer roofs.

Questions
Yes. A water-fed pole reaches most domestic arrays from the ground, so the tiles are not stood on at all. If a panel sits too high or too far back for the pole, we explain that at the site visit and talk through the options.
It is usually moss. Rain carries fragments down from the tiles above and they settle against the lower frame, where water lingers. Given time they root and spread. We brush that edge out on every clean.
No. We use de-ionised water and a soft brush only. Without dissolved minerals the water dries clear, so no detergent is needed to avoid spotting, and nothing but water runs off into your garden.
Not by any figure we can promise. Dirt, droppings and moss shade the glass, and cleaning removes them. What that is worth depends on how dirty the panels were and how the array is placed, so we leave the numbers to your own monitoring.
Only as a separate job. A solar visit covers the panels and their frames. If the tiles above are mossy, cleaning the roof uses a different method, and we would plan the order so the panels are washed last.
Once a year suits many arrays, and twice can make sense under trees or below a mossy roof. Panels on an open, south-facing slope may go longer. We suggest an interval once we have seen how much came off.
