Winter Slip Risk
Slippery Paths,Steps and Patios
Green algae and moss make shaded paths, steps and patios slippery through the wet months. We remove the growth with a method the surface can take and, where the material and the weather allow, apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment to help slow its return.

Winter Slip Risk
Clear the Growth. Keep Your Footing.
Most slips on garden paving happen on the routes used every day: the front step, the side return to the bins, the path to the gate. A thin film of algae can make them treacherous before they look green. We assess the surface, clean it in a way the material can take, and plan the visit around the forecast, because washing just before a frost creates a new hazard rather than removing one.

Why it happens
Where Slippery Growth Builds Up
Shaded and damp routes stay wet for longer through autumn and winter. Algae and moss take hold on paving, steps and decking wherever sunlight is limited, leaves collect or water drains slowly, and the surface can be slippery well before it looks green.
- A green film of algae that turns slick in the rain
- Moss in the joints and along step edges
- Wet leaf litter that keeps the surface damp
- North-facing routes that rarely dry out
- Water from a downpipe running across a step
Where we work
The routes that matter most
Paths and side returns
Narrow side paths, north-facing walkways and routes beside walls or fences can stay damp for much of the day, and turn slippery before they look green.
Steps, ramps and entrances
A small loss of footing at a change in level matters more than on flat ground. Front steps, garden steps and ramps are where we start.
Patios
Natural stone, porcelain and concrete each hold algae differently. The method is chosen for the material, never the same pressure everywhere.
Decking
Timber and composite boards collect algae in the grooves and along shaded edges. They need their own methods, and we only recommend what the boards can take.
Our winter approach
How a winter visit works
We do not use the same method on every surface. The approach depends on the material, its condition, the extent of growth, access and the forecast.
- 01
Assess the routes
We walk the paths, steps and patios with you, identify each material and note where water collects, where growth starts and which routes matter most.
- 02
Remove the slippery growth
Algae, moss and debris are removed with a method and pressure chosen for the material, from soft natural stone to porcelain and timber.
- 03
Chiltern EverGuard™ where suitable
Where the surface and the weather allow, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to help slow regrowth. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months.
- 04
A dated record of the visit
You receive a dated note of what was cleaned and treated, including anything we noticed that needs a repair rather than a clean.
Planning
One Winter Clean or Two Planned Visits
Some properties need a single targeted clean of the paths, steps or entrance causing concern. We assess the area, explain the work we recommend and arrange it when conditions suit.
Where shade, heavy use or recurring growth make regular attention more sensible, we can plan two visits: one in early winter and another later in the season. The plan is set by the property, not by a fixed schedule.

Why the Forecast Can Move Your Visit
Cleaning and treatment both need the right conditions. We do not wash outdoor surfaces immediately before a frost, because water left in joints and low spots can freeze, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied only when the surface and the weather suit it.
If frost or heavy rain is forecast, we may move the visit or split cleaning and treatment across two dates. We will always explain why and agree a new date with you.
- Removing algae and moss reduces one source of slip risk
- Ice, frost, standing water and worn surfaces still need their own attention
Why it matters
What a properly planned winter clean gives you
Slippery Growth Removed
Algae, moss and leaf film are cleared from the routes you use every day.
Planned Around The Forecast
We never wash immediately before a frost, and we move the visit if the conditions turn.
Chiltern EverGuard™ Where Suitable
Applied where the surface and weather allow. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months.
Method Matched To The Material
Natural stone, porcelain, concrete and timber each get the approach they can take.

Questions
Slippery paths, steps and patios FAQs
Can you clean slippery steps in winter?
Often, yes, when the surface and the forecast are suitable. We assess the steps first and never wash immediately before a frost, because water left on the surface can freeze.
Will cleaning stop every slip?
No. Cleaning removes slippery growth and reduces the slip risk that comes with algae and moss, but it cannot remove the hazard of frost, ice, standing water or a worn surface.
Do you clean decking as well as paving?
Yes. We can assess decking alongside paths, steps and patios. Timber and composite boards need their own methods, so we only recommend work the boards can take.
Is Chiltern EverGuard™ applied to every surface?
No. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied where the material, its condition and the weather are suitable. We explain what we recommend for each area at the site visit.
Can you plan two visits through the winter?
Yes. Where growth keeps returning, we can plan one visit in early winter and another later in the season. We tailor the plan to the property rather than assuming every area needs the same.
Why might you move my booking?
Cleaning and treatment both need the right conditions. If frost or heavy rain is forecast, we may move the visit or split cleaning and treatment across two dates, and we will explain why.
