An overgrown block paved driveway in Maidenhead, cleared by hand, deep cleaned, treated with Chiltern EverGuard™, re-sanded with polymeric sand and compacted.
Roof Cleaning · Berkshire
Maidenhead grew in waves, from railway-era Victorian streets to post-war estates and recent developments, and many homes now carry more than one roof under a single address. We clean each part to suit its tiles, then apply Chiltern EverGuard™.

Where we start
Look along a typical roofline here and you often find more than one roof: the original pitch, a dormer from a loft conversion, a garage, a porch or a rear extension added decades later. Each was built at a different time, often with a different tile, and each has had its own share of shade and rain. We assess them one by one at a free site visit rather than letting the worst slope set the method for all of them.

Maidenhead roofs
Much of Maidenhead took shape after the Great Western Railway arrived, and the Victorian and Edwardian streets that followed still carry slate and clay roofs, some with terracotta details that suit the town's long brick-and-tile tradition. Later growth around Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green and beyond added inter-war and post-war homes, most of them under concrete tiles, and recent developments have continued the spread.
The Thames runs along the eastern edge of town, and mature gardens and tree-lined roads keep plenty of roofs in shade. Those conditions favour moss on north-facing slopes and on low roofs tucked beneath taller walls, so an extension or garage is often greener than the main roof above it, even though it is the younger of the two.
Mixed rooflines
A later addition is not always the cleaner roof. Garages, porches and single-storey extensions sit lower, so they catch run-off and debris from the main slope above and spend more of the day in the shadow of the house. Moss establishes on them quickly, and on shallow pitches it can spread across whole courses.
The tiles on the two roofs may differ as well. A replacement concrete tile and an original laid decades earlier can look alike from the drive yet respond differently to cleaning. We record each covering, its condition and its pitch separately, and the method is set section by section.
Dormers and junctions
Where a loft has been converted, every dormer breaks up the roof slope. Its own small roof, the tile cheeks either side and the lead or felt where it meets the main pitch all create corners that hold leaves and moss fragments out of sight from the ground. Roof windows do the same on a smaller scale, with debris piling against the upper edge of the frame.
Lichen
Lichen grips a tile far harder than moss does. Once the moss has been lifted and the roof cleaned, small pale or dark spots can remain where lichen has rooted into the surface. Scrubbing at each one until it disappears would wear the tile, so we do not.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment works into those spots, and they usually soften and fade gradually as the weather acts on them. We explain this at the site visit, so you know the roof on handover day is not quite the finished picture.
Aftercare
Each roof section we clean receives the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment once it is clean, extension and garage roofs included. It targets the spores and remaining growth that cleaning cannot always reach and helps slow the return of moss, algae and lichen.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. A shaded rear extension will usually sit towards the shorter end and an open front slope towards the longer. The treatment needs settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we remove the moss first and return to apply it. Near the end of that period we email to offer a free reassessment.
How it runs
The order of work is the same on every roof. On a mixed roofline, each stage is simply repeated for each section, highest first, so nothing cleaned is fouled from above.
At a free site visit we look over every roof section, using a drone where appropriate and sharing the live pictures with you, and note coverings, growth, earlier repairs and safe access.
You receive a report setting out the method for each section and why, with a defined statement of works and a clear quotation, before anything is booked.
Working from towers, platforms or poles rather than standing on the tiles, operatives lift the bulk of the moss by hand, starting at the highest roof and working down.
Each section is cleaned at the lowest pressure that works on its covering, or soft washed, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment follows when the weather is settled and frost-free.
Moss washed down from every roof level is cleared from the gutters, downpipes are checked, and the project lead walks you through what was done and what to expect next.
Worth knowing
Moss hides a lot. Once it is gone, earlier patch repairs, odd replacement tiles and colour differences between the house roof and a later extension tend to stand out more clearly. That is the roof's history rather than a fault in the clean, and we aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows.
Why us
The method for a dormer, a garage roof and the main pitch is chosen separately, so the toughest growth never sets the pressure for the whole house.
Operatives work from access towers, platforms and poles, close to the surface but off it, which protects older tiles and allows more precise work.
We have worked in Maidenhead before and are based a short way upriver in Marlow, so its mix of period and modern roofs is familiar ground.
Fully insured operatives, a pre-work briefing before we arrive and a full handover from the project lead once the last gutter is clear.
Nearby
Beyond the town itself we clean roofs in Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green and Cox Green, in Bray and Holyport to the south, and across the river in Taplow. Each has its own mix of housing, and every roof is assessed in person first.

Questions
Yes. Each roof section is assessed on its own at the site visit, so an older concrete main roof, a newer extension and a slate porch can each be cleaned in the way that suits them, rather than all at one setting.
Lower roofs sit in the shadow of the house and receive run-off and debris from the slope above, so they stay damp for longer. Moss and algae need that moisture, which is why a younger extension can look older than the roof it adjoins.
Yes, where they can be reached safely. Dormer roofs, cheeks and the junctions around roof windows are treated as separate areas, with care taken over lead, felt, seals and frames, and debris lifted from the corners where it gathers.
Not always. Firmly rooted lichen can leave small marks after cleaning. Rather than wearing the tile to remove them, we rely on the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment and the weather to fade them gradually.
Yes, on the accessible tiles around them. We do not move panels, mounts or cabling, and anything electrical stays a matter for a qualified installer. Moss gathering along the bottom edge of an array is cleared where it can be reached.
No. Cleaning removes growth and dirt; it does not repair the roof. It often makes existing defects easier to see, and where we notice one we tell you so a roofer can look at it.
Typically between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, moisture, the covering and how the roof is looked after. We email as that period comes to an end and offer a free reassessment.
