Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Berkshire
Cookham sits low beside the Thames, and roofs in the village hold moisture long after rain. We lift the moss by hand, protect the gardens and paths below, clean to suit the tile and apply Chiltern EverGuard™ before we leave.

How we see it
Moss and rinse water have to go somewhere once they leave the roof. In a village where gardens are mature and planting often grows right up to the walls, that matters as much as the roof itself. We plan where loosened material will fall, protect borders, paths and paving before we start, and leave the ground below as tidy as we found it.

Cookham roofs
Cookham lies on low ground beside the Thames, with Cookham Rise and Cookham Dean climbing away to the west. River damp lingers in the village, and roofs that get little direct sun can stay wet well into the day, which is all moss and algae need to establish.
Its houses span several centuries. Period cottages and character homes near the village centre often carry clay tiles that have softened with age, riverside houses vary widely, and later family homes, bungalows and newer developments mostly have concrete tiles. Mature trees and established gardens sit close to many of them, adding shade above the roof and planting beneath it.
Below the roof
Before any moss is moved, we look at what lies beneath each part of the roof: borders, climbers, gravel, a patio, a conservatory or a lower roof. Vulnerable planting is covered, and the order of work is arranged so loosened moss falls where it can be collected rather than into a flower bed.
Rinse water is directed away from planting as far as practical, and treatment is kept off lawns and borders. At the end of the day the moss goes into bags and leaves with us. The gutters are cleared too, so nothing taken off the roof is left waiting in the rainwater system.
Cottage roofs
Clay tiles on period cottages can be very old, and age leaves them softer and more porous than they look from the lane. Many have weathered unevenly, with tonal variation that is part of their character. Force is the wrong tool here. Moss is taken off by hand, and what follows is a soft wash or the gentlest clean the tile will take.
Concrete tiles on later homes and bungalows are tougher but textured, so they hold moss in every groove. They are cleaned thoroughly at a pressure set for their condition, never at whatever the machine can deliver.
Uneven growth
Shade from a neighbouring house, a mature tree or the house itself can make one side of a roof a different place from the other. A slope facing north or under branches may carry a deep green covering while the opposite pitch looks fine. We assess each slope by what is actually on it, not by the overall size of the roof, and the effort follows the growth.
Aftercare
Once a roof is clean we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, as we do on every roof. It works into the surface to tackle the spores and growth that cleaning cannot always reach, and it helps reduce how quickly moss and algae come back.
In a damp riverside setting, protection is likely to sit nearer the shorter end of its typical 12 to 24 months. We apply it in settled, frost-free weather and contact you by email near the end of that period to offer a free reassessment.
The work
The method inside each stage is set by the roof and the garden around it, both of which we look at during the free site visit.
We look at the roof from the ground and by drone where appropriate, share the live images with you, and note the planting, paths and lower roofs beneath it.
You receive our recommended method and the reasoning, including how the areas below will be protected, as a defined statement of works with a clear quotation.
Planting and paving are covered where needed. Working from the ground with long poles, or from towers and platforms, operatives lift the moss by hand without stepping onto the roof.
The roof is soft washed or cleaned at low pressure to suit its tiles, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once conditions are settled and free of frost.
Moss is bagged and removed, gutters and downpipes are cleared and checked, covers come off, and the project lead takes you through what was done and what comes next.
Expectations
Cleaning is maintenance, not resurfacing. Old clay will keep its tonal variation, concrete tiles may retain weathering set into the surface, and earlier repairs can stand out once the moss has gone. We look for a clear, significant improvement, and we will tell you at the site visit if part of the roof needs a roofer before it needs a clean.
Why us
Our base in Marlow is only a short way upstream, and damp, tree-shaded village roofs like these are familiar territory for us.
Planting, paths and paving are protected before work starts, and every bag of moss leaves the property with us when we go.
Moss comes off by hand and the cleaning that follows is matched to the tile, from soft clay on a cottage to concrete on a bungalow.
Fully insured operatives, a briefing before the work so you know what to expect, and a handover that covers the treatment and its aftercare.

Questions
Yes. Borders, climbers and paving beneath the work are covered where needed, rinse water is directed away from planting, and treatment is kept off lawns and beds. The moss we remove is bagged and taken away.
Usually, yes, once assessed. Moss is lifted by hand and the clay is soft washed or cleaned at very low pressure. If tiles are already brittle or failing, we will say so at the site visit rather than clean them.
Usually it comes down to shade and drying time. A roof under trees, facing north or close to the river stays damp for longer, and moss establishes fastest where a surface rarely dries out.
No. Operatives work with long poles from the ground, or from access towers and platforms, as close to the surface as practical without standing on it. That protects the tiles and gives better control.
Not always. Growth and dirt come off, but weathering set into old tiles, natural colour variation and earlier repairs can remain. Some lichen marks also fade gradually after the treatment rather than on the day.
It is collected as the work goes on, bagged and taken away with us. Anything that reached the gutters is cleared out and the downpipes are checked, so it does not end up blocking the rainwater system.
There is no fixed interval. Shade, moisture and nearby trees decide how quickly growth returns. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment typically protects for between 12 and 24 months, and we email towards the end of that period to offer a free reassessment.
