Sandstone Patio Cleaning, Marlow
Natural sandstone patio cleaning in Marlow — heavy moss, algae and early black spot removed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™, plus a full gutter clean.
Patio Cleaning · Berkshire
Cookham sits low beside the Thames, and its paving holds moisture long after rain. On patios that means slippery algae on riven stone and green margins beside beds and walls. We clean to suit the stone and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Why it matters
Algae can make paving slick well before it looks particularly dirty, especially on textured stone in shade. Removing that film is what makes the patio safer underfoot, and treating what is left in the surface is what slows its return. At a free site visit we show you where it is growing and how we would deal with it.

Cookham gardens
Cookham lies on low ground beside the Thames, with Cookham Rise and Cookham Dean climbing the higher land to the west. Damp air off the river and the low-lying setting keep many patios wet for long stretches, particularly through autumn and winter.
The village has period cottages near its centre, riverside houses and larger family homes, and its gardens are often mature, with established planting growing close to the paving. Patio edges beside beds, walls and fences can stay damp for most of the day, which is where green algae and dark biological staining build up first.
The damp edges
Many patios here share a pattern: the centre dries quickly after rain while the strip along a wall, raised bed or fence stays wet for hours. The result is clean-looking paving in the middle framed by a green or darkened band.
We give those sheltered edges the extra time they need, while keeping the method gentle near pointing, planting and the base of walls. Cleaning the middle alone would leave the patio looking unfinished.
Riven stone
Riven sandstone and textured slabs have small ridges and hollows that give grip when dry. In shade, those hollows hold moisture and fine organic matter, and algae settles into them to form a slick film when wet.
Reaching into that texture does not mean holding a high-pressure jet close to the stone. A controlled clean combined with treatment of the remaining growth removes the film while keeping the riven face intact, which is what keeps the patio usable.
Garden first
Patios here usually drain towards lawns, beds or gravel margins rather than a hard drain, so where the water goes matters. Before we start, we decide which way rinse water and loosened dirt will travel and keep it away from planting rather than flooding a bed with dirty water.
Planting close to the work is covered and rinsed, and treatments are kept off borders and lawns. In a mature garden this is part of the set-up, not an afterthought.
Furniture marks
Anything that stays in one spot for months shelters the paving beneath it from rain and sun. When it moves, you may find a pale outline, a darker damp patch or dirt gathered around the feet.
Cleaning reduces the contrast caused by dirt and growth, and we clean the full footprint once items are moved. A slight tonal difference from long-term shelter can remain, and it is better to know that before work begins than after.
Our process
Each patio follows the same sequence of stages. The method within each one depends on the paving and how damp the garden is.
We identify the paving, check the joints and drainage, find the slippery and stained areas and agree with you which parts of the garden the clean will cover.
Movable items and loose debris are cleared, planting near the paving is covered, and the route for rinse water is planned away from beds, lawns and the house.
The patio is cleaned methodically at the lowest effective pressure for its material, with extra attention on shaded margins and textured stone.
Black spot and remaining growth are treated with a specialist application, and joints that have washed out are re-sanded where they need it.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes onto the clean surface to help slow regrowth, and loosened debris is cleared from walls, beds and drainage points.
Before you book
Removing algae makes paving markedly less slippery, but no outdoor surface is ever slip-free in rain or frost, and growth gradually returns. In a damp, low-lying garden it returns sooner than on an open hillside.
Why us
We remove the algae film that makes paving slick and treat the growth left in the surface, so the patio stays safer for longer.
Planting is covered, run-off is directed away from beds and lawns, and treatments are kept where they belong.
Every cleaned patio receives it. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, damp, the paving and how it is looked after.
We are fully insured and based in Marlow, a short way upstream along the Thames, so damp riverside gardens are familiar conditions to us.
Nearby
We also clean patios in Cookham Dean and Cookham Rise, across the river in Bourne End, and in Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green and Maidenhead to the south. Each garden is assessed on its own paving and setting.

Questions
Mostly algae. It needs moisture more than anything, and paving in a low, damp garden stays wet for long periods in the colder months. The film it forms is slick when wet. Removing it and treating the surface is what makes the difference.
Yes. Riven sandstone is cleaned gently to keep its texture, at the lowest pressure that achieves the result, and any black spot is treated with a specialist application rather than forced off. The stone's condition is checked first.
Yes. Planting close to the paving is covered and rinsed, treatments are kept off borders and lawns, and the rinse water is directed away from beds. In a mature garden we plan this before any cleaning starts.
Not necessarily. Natural stone varies from slab to slab, and areas long sheltered by furniture or pots can stay a slightly different tone. We remove the dirt and growth so the true colour of the paving shows through.
Yes, where the jointing has washed out or broken down. Joints are checked before cleaning, pressure is controlled around weak areas, and re-sanding afterwards helps keep the slabs firm. Failed mortar is noted separately as a repair.
There is no fixed interval. A shaded, low-lying patio will show growth sooner than an open one. With the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment applied, protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and the condition of the paving is the best guide after that.
