Block Paved Driveway Cleaning in Maidenhead
An overgrown block paved driveway in Maidenhead, cleared by hand, deep cleaned, treated with Chiltern EverGuard™, re-sanded with polymeric sand and compacted.
Driveway Cleaning · Berkshire
Cookham sits low beside the Thames, and its drives hold moisture long after rain, so algae and moss turn paving green and slippery. We remove the growth, protect the garden around it and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Why it matters
Algae and moss need moisture more than anything else. On a drive that rarely dries between showers they spread across the surface and into the joints, and the film they leave becomes slick underfoot in wet weather. Removing it improves how the entrance looks, but on the path to the front door the better footing often matters more.

Cookham conditions
Cookham is a low-lying village on the Thames, and the river keeps the air damp for much of the year. Surfaces that miss direct sun stay wet for hours after rain, and organic growth establishes readily on any paving that does not dry out. Drives on the shaded side of a house, or under garden trees, usually turn green first.
The housing ranges from period cottages near the village centre to larger family homes and newer developments around Cookham Rise and beyond. Many gardens are mature and sit close to the drive, so beds, lawns and climbing plants border the paving on more than one side. Cleaning here has to account for what grows beside the drive as much as what grows on it.
The growth
Algae arrives first as a green or dark film, often across the whole surface of a shaded drive. Moss follows in the joints and along the quieter edges, where soil gathers and tyres rarely reach. Lichen is slower and flatter, and it grips the surface firmly enough that rain alone will not shift it.
Each needs a slightly different approach. Pressure alone can strip the top of the growth and leave its roots behind, which is why we combine controlled cleaning with suitable treatment rather than relying on force.
The garden
With beds and lawns so close to the paving, how we work around them matters. Planting is covered and rinsed, treatments are kept off borders and grass, and the cleaning direction is planned so loosened dirt and rinse water are not driven into the beds.
Edges that meet soil or lawn are also where weeds and moss take hold first, so they get proper attention instead of being left as a dark margin around a bright centre.
Surfaces
Block paving is a common drive surface in the village, and its joints are where the damp settles. After cleaning, the paving is left to dry, compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand.
Older tarmac drives are usually green rather than dirty, and they are cleaned with the pressure held to what an aged surface can take. Concrete is cleaned and treated for deeper staining where needed, though old repairs and variation in the mix can show more clearly once the grey film has gone.
Protection
Cleaning removes what is growing today, but spores keep arriving on the wind and from nearby trees, and in a damp village they settle quickly. That is why every driveway we restore is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, our own treatment, which helps reduce how quickly moss, algae and lichen return.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. On a shaded drive close to the river, expect the shorter end of that range.
How we work
The five stages below apply to every drive we restore; the method inside each is set by the surface and the growth on it.
We identify the surface, the type of growth, the joints and any staining, and note the planting, lawns and walls around the drive that need protecting.
Planting is covered, loose items are moved and the run-off route is planned, so rinse water and debris head where we can manage them.
Algae, moss, weeds and grime are removed at the lowest pressure that works, with treatment used where growth is rooted into the surface.
Once dry, block paving is compacted and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, restoring the joints that the clean has emptied.
Our treatment is applied to the whole drive, planting is rinsed down, and we tidy the area and talk you through the result.
Know the limits
A cleaned and treated drive stays clearer for longer, but in a damp riverside setting growth will return in time, and the treatment slows that rather than stopping it.
Cleaning also reveals rather than removes old repairs, faded blocks and staining that has soaked deep into the surface. We describe the likely result honestly at the site visit, before anything is agreed.
Why us
We are based just upriver in Marlow, so the damp, low-lying conditions along this stretch of the Thames are ones we know well.
Planting is covered and rinsed and treatments are kept off beds and lawns, because village gardens here tend to sit right beside the paving.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to every driveway we restore, rather than offered as an optional extra once the clean is finished.
Fully insured operatives, a clear quotation agreed before work starts and a straightforward explanation of what was done at handover.
Nearby
We also restore driveways in Cookham Dean and Cookham Rise, across the river in Bourne End and Wooburn Green, and south towards Furze Platt and Maidenhead. The damp, green conditions are much the same throughout.

Questions
Usually shade and moisture. A drive that sits in the shadow of the house, a wall or garden trees stays wet longer after rain, and algae establishes fastest where a surface rarely dries. Two drives in the same road can weather very differently.
Yes, in most cases. The slippery film on a green drive is algae and moss, and removing it gives back the grip of the paving underneath. Treatment afterwards helps slow the film returning.
Yes. Planting is covered and rinsed, treatments are kept off beds and lawns, and the cleaning direction is planned so dirty water does not run into the borders.
Usually, once we have seen its condition. Aged tarmac is cleaned with the pressure kept to what it can stand. Areas that are already breaking up or badly cracked need resurfacing rather than cleaning, and we will tell you so.
No. The clean removes what is growing now. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied afterwards to help reduce how quickly new growth establishes, which matters on a drive that stays damp.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. A shaded drive near the Thames, under trees or beside tall hedging, is likely to sit towards the shorter end, and an open, sunny one towards the longer.
