Driveway Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Driveways in Marlow spend much of the year damp, between mist off the Thames, wooded hillsides and the trees in many front gardens. That moisture is behind the green film, the slippery patches and the stained joints we clean away.

Our approach
Algae, moss and weeds all need moisture before anything else, and a drive that stays wet gives them plenty. At a free site visit we look at the surface, where the shade falls and how the water runs off, then set the method to suit the material rather than reaching for the strongest pressure available.

Marlow driveways
Marlow sits on the north bank of the Thames with wooded Chiltern slopes rising behind it. Mist off the river hangs about on still mornings, and many front gardens hold mature trees that keep the drive in shade for much of the day. Paving in those conditions stays wet long after the rain has stopped, and a thin green layer builds up that turns slick underfoot through autumn and winter.
The surfaces vary with the age of the house. Older properties near the centre may have natural stone or gravel at the front, inter-war and post-war homes often have concrete or tarmac, and later houses are usually laid with block paving or resin. Each of those holds water in its own way and is cleaned in its own way.
Slippery surfaces
The green you notice is mostly algae, a fine film that settles on the face of the paving and into its texture. It is thin, but on a wet morning it makes block paving, porcelain and smooth concrete noticeably slippery, which matters on a slope or by the front step. Moss follows wherever the film is left undisturbed, rooting into the joints and along the edges where water gathers.
Rinsing the film off is only half of the job. Spores stay in the pores and joints, so a drive that has simply been washed tends to green over again quickly. That is the reason every driveway we restore is finished with a treatment, which we explain further down this page.
Leaf fall
Leaves that lie on a drive through the autumn break down where they fall. They release tannins that print brown outlines onto pale paving, and the rotting material works into the joints as a rich layer that weed seeds and moss take to readily. Beneath large garden trees, the joints of a block-paved drive can fill with this debris long before they lose their sand.
A deep clean lifts the organic layer from both the surface and the joints. Leaf marks usually fade a great deal, though very old staining on porous stone or concrete can leave a faint trace, and we will point that out at the site visit rather than after the work.
The method
We set the cleaning to the surface, not to the machine. Where the material tolerates it, heated water helps lift greasy traffic film and organic growth without turning the pressure up. Block paving, concrete, tarmac, resin, natural stone and porcelain each have a different limit, and we stay well inside it.
On block paving, cleaning takes the old jointing sand out along with the dirt. Once the surface has dried, the drive is compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which helps stabilise the blocks and stands up to weed growth and washout better than conventional kiln-dried sand.
After the clean
Every driveway we restore is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, our own product. It goes on once the cleaning is complete and helps reduce how quickly algae and moss come back to the surface.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how the drive is looked after. A frontage under trees close to the river is likely to sit towards the shorter end of that range, and an open, sunny one towards the longer.
Step by step
Every driveway goes through the same stages. What changes from one to the next is the method inside each stage, and that is decided at the site visit.
We walk the drive with you, identify the surface and its condition, note the shade, the drainage and any loose or damaged areas, and agree the method, pressure and treatment.
The whole surface is cleaned evenly, with heated water where the material allows it. On block paving the old jointing sand comes out together with the dirt, algae and moss.
Weeds and organic growth are taken out of the joints. Once the paving is dry, block paving is compacted with a vibrating plate compactor so the blocks settle firmly.
Every joint in a block-paved drive is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand. Tarmac, resin, porcelain and other surfaces without sand joints move straight on to the final stage.
The finished drive is treated with Chiltern EverGuard™, and we talk you through what was done and how best to look after the surface until the next visit.
Worth knowing
Cleaning brings back the colour and texture that dirt and growth have hidden, and on most drives the improvement is significant. It is not a repair, and we will tell you at the site visit where the surface itself is the problem.
Why us
We are based in the town, so river damp, tree shade and its mix of older and newer frontages are conditions we know well.
Block paving is compacted and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, rather than left open for weeds and moss to fill again.
The material decides how hard we work it. We use the lowest pressure and the least product that achieves the result, even if that takes longer.
Work is carried out by fully insured operatives, and the person who assessed your drive is accountable for how it is finished.
Nearby
From our base we also clean driveways in Marlow Bottom, Little Marlow, Bourne End, Bisham, Medmenham and Hurley. Most of them share the same river damp and tree cover, so the same surface-first approach carries over.

Questions
Moisture is the main reason. A drive that stays damp under trees or in the shadow of the house gives algae what it needs, and river air keeps many frontages in town wetter for longer. North-facing and overhung areas usually turn first.
No. Heated water is used where the material tolerates it, mainly to help lift traffic film and organic growth. Where a surface needs a gentler approach, we set the method for that material instead and keep the pressure low.
Yes, in most cases they fade a great deal. Leaf tannins sit in the top of the paving, and a deep clean lifts most of them. Very old marks on porous concrete or stone can leave a faint outline, which we point out at the site visit.
Cleaning removes the old jointing sand along with the dirt and growth. We compact the drive with a vibrating plate compactor and refill every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, so the blocks stay locked together and the joints resist weeds.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. A drive in deep shade near the river is likely to sit towards the shorter end, and an open, sunny one towards the longer. The surface type and how it is looked after make a difference too.
Yes. The algae film is what makes damp paving slick, and removing it makes a clear difference underfoot. Any surface can still be slippery in frost or under a layer of wet leaves, so sweeping through the autumn helps.
Yes. The drive needs to be clear of vehicles for the whole visit, including while the joints are being filled. Pots and other loose items should be moved where practical so the surface can be cleaned evenly.
