Block Paved Driveway Cleaning and
Sandstone Steps Cleaning in
High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire

Kempes Chew found Chiltern Surface Co through our website while looking for a local company with the expertise to thoroughly clean both the Indian sandstone entrance steps and the block-paved driveway at his home in High Wycombe.

The two surfaces presented very different requirements. At the front of the property were approximately 12 attractive sawn or honed Indian sandstone steps leading to the entrance. Years of weathering and organic contamination had dulled their appearance. Alongside them was a comparatively new, steep two-car block-paved driveway that Kempes wanted professionally cleaned and improved rather than simply pressure washed.

Kempes had been drawn to our bespoke approach, so the project began with a site assessment and a discussion about what each surface actually needed. That distinction became the basis of the treatment plan: a controlled, progressive clean for the natural sandstone and a deep clean followed by a polymeric-sand jointing upgrade for the block paving.

During the site visit, we talked Kempes and his partner through the cleaning process for the sandstone and explained how we would adjust the treatment according to the way the stone responded.

The sandstone steps required a different approach from the block paving. Rather than starting with an unnecessarily aggressive treatment, we progressively layered our surface treatment, assessing the response of the sawn/honed Indian sandstone as the work developed. The aim was to remove the accumulated weathering and organic contamination, brighten the stone and recover its natural appearance while maintaining control over the treatment throughout.

This is an important part of our approach to natural stone. The material, finish, condition and contamination level all influence how we work. We prefer to start conservatively and build the treatment only as required, rather than treating every sandstone surface at the same strength.

As the contamination lifted, the entrance became noticeably brighter and cleaner, bringing the sandstone steps back into keeping with the rest of the property.

The most immediately visible transformation was at the front entrance. The weathered Indian sandstone steps were cleaned to a significantly brighter finish, sharpening the appearance of the route to the front door.

Kempes later noted that the sandstone cleaning had attracted compliments from neighbours. His review also praised the whole customer journey — from the initial site visit and Rebecca’s communication through to the professionalism of Adam and Alfie on the day.

Deep cleaning the steep block-paved driveway

The block-paved driveway was relatively new, so this was not a rescue of a badly deteriorated surface. The objective was to clean it thoroughly and improve the jointing system while the paving itself remained in good condition.

The driveway was deep cleaned, removing surface contamination together with the existing jointing sand from between the blocks. Particular care was required because of the steep gradient: cleaning and joint preparation needed to be systematic so that the finished sand installation remained consistent across the drive.

Once the paving and joints had been thoroughly cleaned and prepared, the surface was allowed to reach the appropriate condition for re-sanding.

Upgrading the driveway with polymeric sand

The cleaned joints were then filled with polymeric sand. We carried out an initial sanding before mechanically compacting the driveway. Compaction is a key part of the process because it helps settle the material deeper into the joints rather than leaving it sitting only at surface level.

The joints were then checked and topped up where required so that the paving had a consistent, well-filled joint system. The polymeric sand was subsequently activated in a controlled manner.

The driveway benefited from more than a cosmetic clean. Existing sand had been removed, the paving deep cleaned and the joints rebuilt with mechanically compacted polymeric sand before activation and Chiltern EverGuard™ treatment.

The result was a clean, freshly jointed block-paved driveway whose jointing system had been upgraded rather than simply replaced like-for-like — cleaner, more stable and longer-lasting.

Close up, the quality of the finish is easier to judge than it is from the doorstep. The blocks read as their own colour again, with the aggregate in the concrete clearly visible rather than dulled by a film of surface soiling.

After deep cleaning, polymeric re-sanding, mechanical compaction and Chiltern EverGuard™ treatment, the joint system is consistent and well filled across the whole drive.

With the physical cleaning complete, both the Indian sandstone steps and the block-paved driveway received Chiltern EverGuard™ treatment.

Chiltern EverGuard™ is used as the biological protection stage of our cleaning process, targeting residual organic contamination and helping inhibit the return of algae, moss, lichen and similar growth.

Applying the treatment to both surfaces meant the project finished with more than an immediate visual improvement: the cleaned sandstone and block paving also received ongoing protection against organic regrowth.

A complete clean-down and handover

The work was completed by two Chiltern Surface Co operatives over eight hours, with Jon attending and supervising as required and Adam and Alfie carrying out the main cleaning work.

Once the sandstone, driveway jointing and Chiltern EverGuard™ treatment stages were complete, the working areas were thoroughly cleaned down before handover.

This High Wycombe project demonstrates why mixed exterior surfaces should not be treated as though they are all the same. The natural sandstone steps required progressive, controlled treatment to clean and restore their appearance, while the block paving benefited from deep cleaning and a complete upgrade of its jointing system.
