The challenge
Kempes wanted both the Indian sandstone entrance steps and a steep two-car block-paved driveway cleaned and improved rather than simply pressure washed. Years of weathering and organic contamination had dulled the sandstone steps, while the relatively new driveway needed deep cleaning and an upgraded jointing system.
Our approach
Two surfaces, one tailored plan. The sandstone steps were cleaned progressively — starting conservatively and building the treatment as the stone responded — to brighten them without over-treating. The driveway was deep cleaned, the old jointing sand removed, then re-sanded with polymeric sand and mechanically compacted before the joints were topped up and activated. Both surfaces then received Chiltern EverGuard™.
The result
The Indian sandstone steps were cleaned to a substantially brighter finish and the steep block-paved driveway was deep cleaned and upgraded with polymeric sand for better joint stability and longevity. Both surfaces received Chiltern EverGuard™; the finished steps drew compliments from neighbours and a five-star recommendation from Kempes.
Step by step
Every project follows a careful, surface-specific process — here’s exactly how we approached this one.
The driveway was deep cleaned, removing surface contamination together with the existing jointing sand from between the blocks. The steep gradient meant cleaning and joint preparation had to be systematic so the finished sand installation stayed consistent across the drive.
The cleaned joints were filled with polymeric sand, then the driveway was mechanically compacted to settle the material deep into the joints — not just at the surface — before being topped up and activated for a stable, well-filled joint system.
With both surfaces cleaned and the driveway re-sanded, Chiltern EverGuard™ was applied to the block paving and the sandstone steps to help protect the finish and inhibit organic regrowth.
The working areas were cleared and the property cleaned down, leaving both the brightened sandstone entrance and the upgraded driveway ready for handover.
