Gutter Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
With beech woods on the hills above and mature trees in many gardens, gutters in Marlow take in a great deal of leaf litter. We clear them, often from the ground, flush the downpipes and tell you what we found.

Why it matters
A gutter's job is to carry rain off the roof edge and into the downpipe. Once leaves, moss and silt settle in the channel, water backs up, spills over the front and runs down brickwork and fascias instead. Most of that happens out of sight, which is why we check the full run rather than the stretch you can see from the pavement.

Local conditions
Marlow is a green town. The Chiltern slopes to the north are clothed in beech woodland, established trees line the river, and many of the older gardens hold trees planted generations ago. Each autumn that adds up to a heavy drop of leaves, seed husks and twigs, and a good share of it lands in the nearest gutter.
Leaves are only part of the load. Damp air from the Thames keeps roofs wet, and the moss growing on them breaks away in pieces and washes down into the channel, where it packs together with leaf litter into a dense, water-holding mat. Period houses near the centre often still have cast iron guttering, while later homes and extensions usually carry uPVC.
Warning signs
Water pouring over the front edge in heavy rain is the sign everyone notices, but by then the blockage has usually been building for some time. Earlier clues are easier to miss: dark tide marks on the wall beneath the gutter line, a fascia that has turned green, seedlings or grass growing out of the run, and joints that drip long after the rain has stopped.
Blockages often sit at the outlet, where debris is drawn towards the downpipe and packs tight. A gutter can look clear along most of its length from below and still fail at the one point that matters.
What overflow does
Rainwater that should leave at the roofline has to go somewhere. It soaks the wall below, and wet masonry can show as damp on the inside face. Timber fascias and soffits behind an overflowing gutter stay wet through the winter and begin to soften. Water dropping straight off the edge saturates the ground close to the house.
A channel full of sodden debris also holds standing water, which adds weight to the brackets and freezes there in a cold snap. Clearing the run does not undo harm already done, but it removes the cause.
Gutter types
Older houses close to the centre sit alongside inter-war semis, post-war family homes and more recent developments, so we come across most kinds of guttering here. Each material ages in its own way and is handled a little differently. Cast iron is heavy and can rust at the joints, uPVC can sag between brackets that have worked loose, and aluminium marks if anything abrasive is used on it. Glass roofs need their own care because the gutters sit right over the panels.
How we work
Most domestic gutters can be cleared from ground level. Where they cannot, the access is decided at the site visit rather than improvised on the day.
We check the gutters, outlets, downpipes and the roof edge above them, noting splits, failed joints and dropped brackets before any debris is moved.
A pole-fed gutter vacuum draws leaves, moss and silt out of the channel and into the machine rather than onto your borders. Where overhangs or glass roofs rule that out, we use a properly footed ladder.
Water is run along the channel and down each pipe so we can see it draining freely rather than assume it does. Problems deeper in underground drainage are noted for separate investigation.
Loose brackets and separated joints are re-seated where that is a minor fix. Anything bigger, such as a cracked section or a run that has lost its fall, is reported rather than patched.
The area below is left tidy, the debris leaves with us, and you receive a short, plain summary of the roofline, including the parts you cannot see from the ground.
Know the limits
A clean gutter carries water away properly again, provided the gutter itself is sound. Cleaning will not seal a failed joint, mend a cracked section or correct a run that was hung without enough fall, and it cannot reach problems in buried drains.
In a town with this much tree cover, leaves come back every autumn, so clearing is regular maintenance rather than a one-off job. We will suggest a sensible interval once we have seen how much came out.
Why us
We are based in Marlow and know how its trees, river damp and mix of older and newer houses affect a roofline and the gutters along it.
Leaves and moss go into the vacuum rather than onto your borders and paths, and they leave the property with us when the work is done.
A short, plain report on joints, brackets and the roof edge, written without jargon and without turning it into a sales pitch.
Fully insured operatives, with the access method agreed at the site visit and the owner accountable for every job we carry out.
Nearby
We clear gutters in the surrounding villages too: Marlow Bottom, set in its own wooded valley, Little Marlow, Bourne End and Cookham further downstream, and Bisham, Medmenham and Hurley on the river. Wherever trees stand close to the house, the same checks apply.

Questions
Once or twice a year suits most homes. Houses under or beside large trees, or with a mossy roof above, sit at the more frequent end. We suggest an interval at the site visit based on the trees around you and what came out of the run.
Late autumn, once most of the leaves are down, catches the heaviest load before the winter rain. Homes beneath evergreens or a mossy roof collect debris all year round, so for them how often matters more than when.
Only where we need to. Most runs are cleared with a pole-fed vacuum from ground level, so nothing leans against the fascia. Deep overhangs, conservatory roofs and runs behind planting can need a properly footed ladder, and that is agreed at the site visit.
Yes. Once the channel is clear we run water through the outlets and down each pipe to check it drains. If the blockage is further down, in a gully or a buried drain, we tell you rather than guess.
Only minor repairs. We re-seat loose brackets and separated joints where that will hold. Cracked sections, failed seals on older cast iron or a run without enough fall need a gutter specialist, and we will tell you plainly.
Yes. Conservatory and lean-to gutters have shallow falls and sit over glass, so they are cleared by hand or with the vacuum depending on access, taking care not to put weight on the roof panels.
Not on its own. Clearing stops the overflow that may be feeding it, but a wall soaked over many months needs time to dry out, and damp can have other causes. If the pattern looks unrelated to the gutter, we will mention it.
Yes. Leaves, moss and silt are drawn into the vacuum rather than dropped onto your beds and paths, and the waste leaves the property with us when the job is finished.
