Beech woods, chalk valleys and century-old rooflines give Buckinghamshire gutters a heavier load than most. We clear the channels, flush every downpipe, wash the outer faces and tell you plainly how the roof edge is faring.

The county as a whole
Much of southern Buckinghamshire lies within the Chilterns National Landscape, where chalk ridges carry some of England's best-known beech woodland and narrow valleys fall towards the Thames. Rain, leaves and roof moss all travel downhill, and the gutter is where they meet. This page explains how the county shapes that load, then points you to the page for your own town.
Tree cover
Beech, the signature tree of the Buckinghamshire Chilterns, behaves differently from most garden trees. Its leaves turn late and do not all come down together; beech hedges and younger trees often hold their dry, brown leaves right through winter and let them go in the spring winds. That stretches the leaf season well beyond November, so a gutter cleared after the first heavy drop can be partly refilled by the new year.
In good mast years the trees also shed husks and nuts in quantity. These are woody, prickly and slow to rot, and they lodge at outlets where soft leaves would have washed through. The wind carries them well beyond the tree line.
Lie of the land
Where a house sits on the slope matters as much as which town it is in. The valleys of the Wye, the Misbourne and the Chess hold cool, damp air, and roofs on their floors dry slowly after rain, so leaf litter in the gutter softens into silt while moss thrives on the tiles above. Higher up, on the ridges, roofs dry faster but take more wind, which carries in leaves from gardens and woods some distance away.
North of the escarpment the ground opens out into the Vale of Aylesbury, where trees are fewer and wind-blown seed, roof grit and moss make up more of the load. Each setting fills a gutter in its own way, so we look at the house in its surroundings first.
Roofs and rainwater goods
The county's rooflines record its building history. Older cottages carry steep pitches of handmade clay tile, long made locally in the Chilterns, which holds moss well and sheds a fine red grit as it weathers. Victorian and Edwardian houses, many built as the railway reached Amersham, Chesham and Gerrards Cross, often have slate or machine-made tile, cast iron gutters and hoppers, and gables that add short runs and valleys.
Post-war estates around High Wycombe and the larger towns favoured concrete tiles and early plastic guttering that is now ageing at its joints. Recent developments, especially around Aylesbury, use uPVC throughout. Cast iron needs a gentle hand and old plastic can crack if forced, so the method follows the material, not a routine.

The same stages apply to a hillside cottage and a new-build in the vale; only the time each one takes changes.
We note the trees around the house, which way each roof slope faces and where water leaves the roof, then agree with you every run, outbuilding and conservatory gutter to include.
Where access allows, a pole-fed gutter vacuum lifts leaves, mast husks and moss out of the channel from ground level, so debris goes into the machine rather than onto beds and paths.
Water is run through each outlet and downpipe so we can see it flowing freely at the bottom. A slow pipe is worked clear rather than assumed to be fine.
Loose brackets and separated joints are re-seated where it is a minor fix, and the green streaking on fascia and soffit faces is washed off.
You get a short, plain summary of the roof edge, including anything beyond a minor repair that wants a roofer's or builder's attention.
Why choose us
We work from Marlow, inside the county, so beech woods, valley damp and old rooflines are the conditions we meet every working day.
Cast iron, ageing plastic and modern uPVC each get the handling they can stand, and old fittings are never levered or forced.
Leaves, husks and silt go into the vacuum and away in our van, rather than being dropped into the borders under the eaves.
We are fully insured, and we tell you plainly where cleaning ends and repair begins, so you are never sold work your gutters do not need.

Questions
Late in the year, once the main leaf fall is down, suits most homes in the Chilterns. Where beech hedges or young beech hold their leaves into winter, a second clear in spring often makes sense. We time visits to the trees around your house.
No. We work across the south of the county and the towns listed on this page, from the Thames up to Aylesbury and the vale. If your home lies further north, we will tell you plainly rather than stretch ourselves.
Yes. Clearing a gutter does not alter the building, so it is not usually restricted. We take particular care with cast iron and old hoppers, and we never alter or replace historic fittings ourselves.
Usually because the source keeps working. Beech can drop leaves from autumn into spring, moss on a shaded roof keeps breaking away, and a valley or dormer can deliver a season's debris to one short length. We find the source and suggest an interval to match.
Not always. Where access allows we work from the ground with a pole-fed vacuum, which suits the sloping gardens and narrow side paths common in the hill towns. Where a ladder is the safer choice, it goes on proper footing.
