Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Gutter Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Penn sits high on a Chiltern ridge among beech woods and commons, and its cottages and older houses take in leaves from every side. We clear their gutters carefully, flush the downpipes and report what we see.

Smaller roofs, closer trees
Older cottages often have modest gutters set low under the eaves, short runs broken by dormers and porches, and downpipes that discharge close to the wall. With woodland and big garden trees nearby, those small channels fill faster than a larger system would, and when they overflow the water lands right at the foot of the house.

Penn homes
Penn stands on a ridge of the Chiltern Hills, with beech woods close by and commons around Tylers Green. The Penn and Tylers Green conservation area takes in the old village core around Holy Trinity Church, larger houses along the ridge dating from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, and vernacular cottages in flint and brick.
Plain clay tiles are closely tied to the village, which has a long tile-making history, and Welsh slate appears on some nineteenth-century houses. Later homes towards Knotty Green and Tylers Green add uPVC rainwater systems to the mix. On an exposed ridge, the wind carries leaves in from the woods and commons as well as from your own trees, and moss on shaded tiles adds its share.
Cottage rooflines
A cottage roofline is rarely one straight run. Dormer windows carry their own short gutters, porches and lean-tos add more, and where two roof slopes meet the gutter often turns a corner or drops into a hopper. Each change of direction is a place where leaves stop moving and pack together.
Low eaves make some of these easy to see, but the gutters behind a dormer cheek or above a porch canopy are often out of sight. We check every short length as well as the main run, and clear them in the same visit.
Older materials
When a gutter overflows onto a flint-and-brick wall, the water works into the lime mortar between the flints and keeps it wet. Over time that encourages green growth on the wall face and can soften the pointing. Plain clay tiles above shed moss and lichen debris into the channel, and some period houses still carry cast iron or other older guttering.
We clear older runs carefully, without forcing joints or brackets, and report anything that looks as though it needs a specialist. If your house is listed, any work beyond cleaning is a matter for you and the local authority.
Woodland debris
Beech leaves are tough and slow to rot, and once wet they lie flat and overlap, forming a mat that seals the bottom of the channel. Seed husks and small twigs lodge in it, and moss from the roof binds the whole layer together. On a ridge, autumn gales can fill a gutter that was clear only weeks before.
Evergreens and hedges add debris through the rest of the year, which is why houses close to woodland sometimes need clearing more than once.
Step by step
The order is the same on every house. On older properties we simply take more time over the checks, because the fixings are older too.
Before anything is touched, we trace each gutter, dormer run, hopper and downpipe around the house and note the material, its condition and the safest way to reach each section.
Where the run allows, a pole-fed vacuum lifts out leaves and moss from the ground. Short dormer gutters and delicate period sections may be cleared by hand from a properly footed ladder.
Water is sent along each length and down every pipe, and we watch where it goes. Pipes discharging into old gullies or soakaways are noted if the water does not get away.
Loose brackets and separated joints are re-seated where a small fix will hold. Rusted cast iron, cracked lengths and runs that have lost their fall are described to you, not patched.
The debris goes with us, the ground under the eaves is left tidy, and green streaking is washed from the outer faces of uPVC gutters and fascias before we finish.
Within limits
A cleared gutter on sound fixings will carry water away again. It will not reseal an old joint, replace a corroded section, rebuild soft pointing or dry out a wall that has been wet for a long time. On a property surrounded by beech woodland, debris will return, so it helps to think of clearing as routine upkeep rather than a one-off.
Why us
Period gutters and brackets are cleared without force, and we would rather report a weak fixing than disturb something that needs a specialist.
Dormers, porches, lean-tos and hoppers are checked and cleared alongside the main gutter, so no hidden length is left full.
We are based in Marlow, a short drive away, and clear gutters in wooded Chiltern villages through every season of the year.
Fully insured operatives, with ladder or ground-level access decided at the site visit and the owner accountable for every job.
Nearby
We clear gutters across the neighbouring settlements too: Tylers Green, Knotty Green and Forty Green, Penn Street and Winchmore Hill, and Hazlemere. Most share the same woodland setting and older housing, so the same checks apply.

Questions
Yes, in most cases. Dormer gutters are short and often hidden from the ground, so we look at them during the site visit and agree whether they can be reached with the vacuum or need a properly footed ladder.
Yes. Clearing a gutter does not alter the building, and we work carefully on older fittings. Anything beyond cleaning, such as replacing cast iron sections, is a matter for the owner and, where relevant, the local authority.
They are tough, slow to break down and lie flat when wet, so they layer up into a mat across the bottom of the channel. Seed husks and roof moss lodge in that mat, and it packs almost solid at the outlet.
Yes, over time. Water spilling down the face keeps the lime mortar between the flints wet, which encourages green growth and softens the pointing. Clearing the gutter stops the supply of water, though repointing is a job for a specialist.
Usually once or twice a year, with the main clear after leaf fall. Homes right beside woodland or under evergreens can need an extra visit. We suggest an interval once we have seen how much your gutters hold.
Yes. Leaves, moss and silt are collected as we work rather than dropped into your borders or onto the lawn, and they leave the property with us when we go.
