Driveway Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Penn sits high on a Chiltern ridge among beech woods, and many of its drives run between flint walls, hedges and old trees. We clean them with the walls, planting and older surfaces in mind, and treat the growth so it returns more slowly.

Village setting
In a village like this the drive is rarely just a slab of paving. It is bordered by old walls, hedges, gate piers and planting that matter as much to the property as the surface itself. We plan where the water and the treatment go before we start, and choose a method that suits the oldest material on the drive, not the toughest.

Penn properties
Penn stands on high ground in the Chiltern Hills, and much of the village lies within the Penn and Tylers Green conservation area. Its historic core gathers around Holy Trinity Church, with larger older houses along the ridge, vernacular cottages, commons and later homes in between. Flint and brick are everywhere: in house walls, boundary walls and the piers either side of many entrances.
Drives here reflect that setting. Gravel and bound surfaces are common in front of cottages and country houses, natural stone and old brick paving appear at period properties, and later homes tend towards block paving or tarmac. Beech woodland and mature trees overhang many of them, so leaf fall is heavy, drives dry slowly and lichen and moss settle on anything that stays shaded.
Gravel drives
Gravel looks low-maintenance, but under trees it slowly fills with leaf litter that breaks down into a fine soil. Weeds root in that layer, moss creeps in from the shaded edges, and the drive gradually turns green and firm underfoot instead of loose and clean.
We treat gravel drives for weeds, moss and organic debris, clear what has built up along the edges and leave the surface tidy. Gravel is handled differently from hard paving, so it is planned as its own part of the work. If the gravel has thinned or the base beneath is showing, we will tell you so you can decide whether it needs topping up.
Stone and lichen
On stone and old brick paving in shaded spots, lichen is often the stubborn part. It forms flat grey, green or dark patches that grip the surface and root into it, so rinsing alone will not move it. It needs treating and time to break down, rather than more force.
Sandstone, limestone, granite and slate are each assessed at the site visit before we settle the method and pressure. We remove algae, moss, lichen and staining, and tell you beforehand what we expect to lift and what is likely to stay. Weathering on an old stone frontage is part of what makes it look right, and we do not try to scour it away.
Around the drive
Flint walls are often laid in soft lime mortar, and old brick piers can be just as delicate. We keep cleaning spray off them and direct run-off away from their bases, borders and lawn edges, so dirt and treatment end up where we intend rather than against the wall.
Woodland edge
Beech trees drop a heavy layer of leaves each autumn, along with the prickly husks of their nuts, known as mast. On a drive beneath them, that debris collects at the edges and in the joints, holds water and feeds the next season's moss. Sweeping it away regularly through the autumn makes a real difference between visits.
Every drive we restore is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which helps reduce how quickly growth comes back. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on location, surroundings, surface and upkeep, and a drive under dense woodland will usually be at the shorter end.
How we work
The stages are the same on every drive. On older and mixed surfaces, the care taken within each one is what makes the difference.
At a free site visit we identify each surface, look at the walls, piers and planting around it, and agree how water, run-off and treatment will be kept where they belong.
Borders and delicate planting are protected, loose items moved and parking arranged, so the cleaning itself can be carried out steadily and without disturbing the surroundings.
Hard paving is cleaned at a pressure suited to its age, gravel is treated for weeds and moss, and stone with lichen receives a treatment and time to work.
On block paving, the dry surface is compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand to keep the blocks firm.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the finished drive, walls and gates are checked for splash, and we explain how to look after the surface through the leaf season.
What to expect
A good clean brings out the colour of the stone, the brick or the gravel again and removes the green that has built up in the shade. It will not straighten worn setts, replace lost gravel or repair a wall. Under heavy tree cover, regrowth will begin sooner than on open ground, and keeping leaves off the drive is the best help between visits.
Why us
Flint, lime mortar and old brick are kept clear of spray and run-off, because they are harder to put right than the drive itself.
Gravel drives are treated for weeds and moss and left tidy, rather than being worked like hard paving.
Lichen on stone is treated and given time to break down, instead of being blasted at the risk of marking the surface beneath.
Our operatives are fully insured, and parking on narrow lanes is agreed in advance so neighbours are not left blocked in.

We also clean driveways in Tylers Green, Knotty Green, Forty Green, Winchmore Hill, Penn Street and Hazlemere. They share much of the same woodland setting and older building materials, so the same careful approach applies.

Questions
Yes. Gravel drives are treated for weeds, moss and organic debris, the edges are cleared and the surface is left tidy. If the gravel has thinned to the point where it needs topping up, we will tell you.
No. We keep spray away from flint and lime mortar, steer the run-off away from the base of the wall and rinse off any splash before we leave. Where a wall is already loose or crumbling, we point it out beforehand.
Usually lichen. It forms flat grey, green or dark patches that root into stone and brick, which is why rain and rinsing leave it in place. It needs a treatment and time to break down rather than high pressure.
Usually, yes. We check access and parking at the site visit and agree where the van will stand, so the lane stays passable and nothing has to be worked out on the morning.
Yes, after assessment. Old brick and setts can be softer than they look, so the pressure is set low and the method chosen for the material. We say beforehand what we expect to lift and what will stay.
Typically between 12 and 24 months, depending on location, surroundings, surface and maintenance. Under dense beech woodland it usually sits at the shorter end, so clearing leaves from the drive each autumn helps it go further.
