Block Paved Driveway Cleaning in High Wycombe
Restoring a 150m² block paved driveway in High Wycombe: deep clean, damaged blocks replaced, polymeric re-sanding, compaction and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Driveway Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
High Wycombe fills the steep valley of the River Wye, so two drives a few streets apart can face entirely different conditions. We have worked in the town, and we set every method by the surface and the setting.

Reading the site
In a valley town, aspect and traffic shape a drive as strongly as its material. A frontage on the sunny side may only need road film lifting, while one on the shaded slope opposite is carpeted in moss. We look at both the surface and its setting at a free site visit before deciding how to clean it.

Valley conditions
High Wycombe grew along the narrow valley of the River Wye, with wooded Chiltern hillsides rising steeply on either side. Roads climb out of the centre at sharp gradients, so the direction a house faces changes from one street to the next. Slopes that turn away from the sun spend much of the winter in shadow, and the woods above them add leaf fall and damp.
The housing covers every period. Victorian and Edwardian terraces from the town's furniture-making years sit near the centre, inter-war and post-war estates spread up the valley sides, and newer developments fill the edges. Driveways follow suit: short, steep concrete drives in front of older semis, block paving on later homes and tarmac almost everywhere, many of them close to busy roads.
Two kinds of dirt
Drives near busy roads collect a grey film of fine grit, exhaust deposits and tyre residue. It is a surface layer, and a thorough, even clean removes it, helped by heated water where the material tolerates that. Moss, algae and lichen are different: they are alive, they root into the joints and the texture of the paving, and simply washing them off leaves enough behind for them to return.
Most drives in town carry some of both, so we deal with each on its own terms. The deposit is cleaned off, and the growth is removed and then treated, which is why every drive we restore is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment.
Aspect
A drive that sees little direct sun through the winter never fully dries between showers, and damp paving is where algae and moss establish first. Add the leaf litter from the hanging woods above, and the north-facing streets can turn green while drives on the opposite slope stay largely clear.
That difference carries on after the clean. Chiltern EverGuard™ helps reduce how quickly growth comes back, and protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on location, surroundings, surface and upkeep. On a shaded slope under trees, expect the shorter end of that range; on a sunny, open frontage, the longer.
Steep frontages
Steep drives bring their own problems. Rain runs fast down them and settles at the bottom, washing sand from the lower joints of block paving and leaving the lowest strip wettest. We clean from the top down so loosened dirt never runs back over finished paving, and we check the bottom edge and any channel drain closely.
Plain concrete is common on older frontages here. We clean it and treat deeper staining where it needs it, and tell you at the site visit what we expect to lift and what is likely to stay.
Start to finish
Whatever the slope or the surface, every drive passes through the same stages. The site visit decides how each one is carried out on yours.
We identify the surface, its condition and its aspect, separate road film from organic growth, check drainage at the foot of the slope and set the method and pressure.
The drive is cleaned evenly from its highest point downwards, with heated water where the material allows, removing film, growth and the old jointing material from block paving.
Weeds and organic matter come out of the joints, and dry block paving is settled with a vibrating plate compactor so the blocks hold firm on the gradient.
Every block paving joint is filled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which helps the joints resist washout, a real advantage on a drive where rain runs quickly downhill.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the cleaned surface, the frontage and pavement are left tidy and we explain how the drive's aspect is likely to affect regrowth.
Realistic results
Cleaning lifts road film, growth and most staining, and the improvement on a neglected drive is usually significant. It does not repair cracked concrete, re-level blocks that have crept down a slope or bring back colour that has faded with age. Deep oil marks may lighten rather than disappear. On the shaded side of the valley, growth will return sooner than on open ground, and keeping leaves swept off between visits helps more than anything else.

Questions
Yes. We have carried out driveway work in the town, and we are based a short drive away in Marlow. Every drive is still assessed on its own at a free site visit before we recommend a method.
No, usually it is easier. Road film is a surface deposit that an even clean lifts, helped by heated water where the material allows. Moss and lichen root into the surface, so they need removing and then treating to slow their return.
Yes, in most cases. We clean steep drives from the top down so dirt is not washed back over finished paving, and pay close attention to the lowest strip and any drainage channel. Access and parking are agreed at the site visit.
Because it rarely dries. Little winter sun and leaf fall from the woods above keep the paving damp, which is what moss needs. Cleaning and the treatment that follows slow its return, but a shaded drive will always green over sooner than a sunny one.
Yes. Concrete is cleaned and treated for deeper staining where it needs it. Some old marks and patches of discolouration are part of the concrete itself, and we tell you at the site visit what we expect to lift.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. It depends on the property's location, surroundings, surface and upkeep. In this town aspect makes a large difference: a shaded slope under trees sits at the shorter end, a sunny frontage nearer the longer.
