Block Paved Driveway Cleaning in High Wycombe
Restoring a 150m² block paved driveway in High Wycombe: deep clean, damaged blocks replaced, polymeric re-sanding, compaction and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Driveway Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Princes Risborough sits where the Chiltern escarpment meets the open vale, and its driveways run from older frontages near the centre to block paving on newer estates. We set the method by surface, then rebuild block-paved joints properly.

Where we start
On a block-paved driveway, the narrow lines of sand between the blocks do real work. They lock the paving together, let it flex under a car and leave weeds little room to root. Cleaning removes what remains of that sand along with the dirt, so on these drives we treat refilling the joints as part of the job, never as an optional extra.

Local driveways
Princes Risborough lies at the foot of the Chiltern escarpment, with wooded slopes rising behind the town and flatter, open country stretching away from it. Which side of town a house sits on often matters more than how old it is. Drives tucked in under the hills catch less winter sun and stay damp for longer, while those facing the open side dry faster but take the full force of wind and rain.
The housing is mixed. Older brick and flint buildings stand near the centre, and much of the town is made up of later twentieth-century homes and more recent developments. A great many of those newer frontages are laid in concrete block paving, which is why joint care runs through so much of this page.
Block paving
Concrete block paving is a flexible surface. Each block is held by the bedding beneath it and the sand packed into the joints around it. Over the years that sand washes out, weeds and moss take its place, and the deep clean that removes them also clears whatever jointing material was left.
Stopping there would leave the restoration half done. Once the cleaned surface has dried, we run a vibrating plate compactor over it to settle the blocks, then fill every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand. It helps stabilise the paving and gives more protection against weed growth, erosion, joint washout and freeze-thaw damage than conventional kiln-dried sand.
Other surfaces
Not every drive in town is block paved. Older properties and some larger plots have tarmac, plain or pattern-imprinted concrete, natural stone or a resin-bound finish, and each takes a different pressure and method. We identify the surface at the site visit and set the approach to suit it, using heated water only where the material tolerates it.
Aspect and slope
Because the town sits against the hills, plenty of drives have a fall to them, towards the road, a garage or a channel drain. Water from the clean follows that fall and carries silt, moss and old jointing sand with it. We plan the working direction around the slope so loosened debris is gathered up rather than washed into a gully or across the pavement.
Aspect shapes what we find, too. A north-facing drive below the escarpment tends to hold green algae across its whole width, while an open, south-facing one may show little growth but more ingrained road film and tyre marks. The method changes with that, not only the time it takes.
Order of work
Every driveway follows the same sequence. The detail inside each stage is decided at the site visit, once we know the surface and the state it is in.
We identify the material and look at the joints, edging, drainage and any oil or rust marks, then explain what we expect to lift and what may stay before anything is agreed.
The driveway is cleaned at the lowest pressure that achieves the result, taking off grime, algae and, on block paving, the old jointing material. A second application is preferred to extra force.
Weeds and organic growth are cleared from the joints and along the edges, and the paving is left to dry so the new jointing can be worked in properly.
Block paving is settled with a vibrating plate compactor, then every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand so the blocks are held firmly together again.
The finished drive is treated with Chiltern EverGuard™, our own treatment, which helps reduce how quickly moss and algae return. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months.
Worth knowing
Cleaning lifts dirt, growth and much of the staining, and re-jointing firms up a sound block-paved surface. It cannot level sunken blocks, rebuild a failed base or close cracks in concrete or tarmac, and once the grime has gone, older patch repairs can be easier to see.
Why us
Every block-paved drive is compacted and refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand as standard, so the clean never leaves the paving looser than it was.
Block paving, tarmac, concrete, resin and stone each get their own pressure and approach, set after we have seen the surface in person.
We tell you at the site visit which marks should lift and which may only fade, so the finished drive matches what was described.
The work is carried out by fully insured operatives, and the finished driveway is walked through with you before we pack up.
Nearby
We also clean driveways in the villages around the town, including Monks Risborough and Whiteleaf beneath the hills, Longwick out on flatter ground, and Lacey Green, Bledlow and Saunderton close by. The same assessment comes first wherever the drive is.

Questions
Because the clean takes the old jointing sand out along with the dirt and weeds. Without fresh material in the joints the blocks can shift and weeds find their way back in, so refilling every joint is part of the restoration.
Yes. Once the cleaned driveway has dried, a vibrating plate compactor settles the blocks before every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand. Compacting first gives the new jointing a firmer, more even surface to hold.
Yes. It is the jointing material we use as standard on every block paving restoration. It helps stabilise the paving and gives more protection against weeds, erosion, washout and freeze-thaw damage than conventional kiln-dried sand.
Usually sooner than an open one. Less winter sun means the surface stays damp after rain, and algae and moss follow the damp. Chiltern EverGuard™ helps slow that return, and keeping leaves swept off through autumn helps as well.
Mostly. Specialist treatment significantly reduces most oil staining. Very old marks that have soaked deep into the blocks may not lift completely, and we say so at the site visit rather than after the work.
Typically between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how it is looked after. A shaded drive beneath the hills is likely to sit nearer the shorter end of that range.
