Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Homes tucked under the Chiltern escarpment get little winter sun, while those looking out over the open vale take the wind and rain. Both leave walls stained unevenly. We treat render, paint, brick and flint at low pressure and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

How we start
Soft Wash Treatment cleans with a solution rather than with force. A low-pressure application is left on the wall to act on algae, mould and lichen, and the surface is then rinsed down. That only works well when the finish underneath can take it, so every job begins with a free site visit where we look at each elevation, the coating and what is actually growing there.

Local homes
Princes Risborough sits at the foot of the Chiltern escarpment, where the wooded hills give way to the flatter farmland of the Vale of Aylesbury. That position produces two quite different kinds of weathering within a short walk. Houses close under the hills see less winter sun and dry slowly after rain, while elevations facing out across the vale are open to wind-driven weather and the dust it carries off the fields.
The buildings span several centuries. Older properties near the town centre use brick and flint, often bedded in soft lime mortar, and the later streets and newer developments around the edge bring render, painted masonry and uPVC rooflines. Each of those finishes reacts to cleaning differently, which is why we never apply one approach to the whole town.
Aspect
Algae and mould need moisture that lingers. On most houses here, the wall that holds the damp longest is the one that sees least sun, stands closest to a hedge or tree, or catches run-off from a sill or gutter above it. That wall will usually carry a green or grey film long before the rest of the house shows anything.
We look at a property as a set of elevations rather than a single block. A wall that needs treatment is treated across its full width, so it does not end up with a clean rectangle in the middle of a stained face, while walls that are only gently weathered are left alone unless you want them included.
Paint and render
Many of the newer homes around town have painted render or painted brick. Paint is often the most fragile layer on the wall, so we look at it before anything else, paying particular attention to the edges around windows, sills and downpipes, where failure tends to start.
Sound paint can usually be cleaned well at low pressure. Paint that is chalking, flaking or lifting is already failing, and no cleaning method will bond it back to the wall. If redecoration is the real need, we will say so at the visit rather than wash a wall that needs a decorator.
Older walls
On older brick and flint walls, the hard part of the wall is not the part that decides the method. Flint and fired brick tolerate a great deal, but traditional lime mortar is soft by design, and a pressure lance can wash it out of the joints.
Soft washing suits these walls because the solution does the cleaning rather than the water pressure. We keep the rinse gentle, watch the joints throughout and show you any pointing that was already loose, so you know what needs a builder rather than a clean.
Protection
Once the wall has been rinsed and is clean, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as standard. It helps reduce how quickly algae and mould re-establish on the surface, which matters most on walls that sit in shade under the hills.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on where the house sits, how sheltered or exposed the wall is, the finish and how it is looked after. A wall facing the open vale that dries quickly after rain is likely to stay clear for longer than one tucked in against trees.
Step by step
The order of work is the same on every house. What changes is the solution, the dwell time and the rinse, which are set by what we found at the visit.
We walk round the house with you, identify each finish, check paint, render and pointing, and note what is growing where. If soft washing is not the right method for a surface, we tell you then.
Borders, lawns, glazing and paintwork near the work area are covered or wetted down first, and pots and furniture are moved clear, so the solution goes only where it is meant to.
The solution is applied evenly across the agreed elevation at low pressure and given time to work on the algae, mould and lichen, rather than being forced off with a jet.
Once the treatment has done its work, the wall is rinsed down carefully, with attention to sills and joints, and the surrounding planting is rinsed off at the same time.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean surface. We then go over the finished elevations with you and point out anything the clean has made easier to see, such as hairline cracks.
Know the limits
Soft Wash Treatment removes biological growth and the staining it leaves, and it can make a significant improvement to a tired elevation. It does not repair the building. We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows, and we tell you at the visit where it may not.
Why us
Every finish is identified and checked first, so the method is chosen to suit the wall rather than the wall being made to suit the method.
Render, paint, brick and flint are cleaned by the solution and a gentle rinse, never by turning the pressure up to save time.
Planting, lawns and glass are protected before we start and rinsed afterwards, and that time is built into every job we price.
The work is carried out by fully insured operatives, and the project lead talks you through the finished elevations before we leave.
Nearby
We also carry out Soft Wash Treatment in the villages nearby, including Monks Risborough, Whiteleaf, Askett, Longwick, Bledlow and Saunderton. Some sit right under the hills and others out on the open vale, so the same assessment comes first wherever the house stands.

Questions
No. Pressure washing relies on the force of the water to strip dirt away. Soft washing applies a cleaning solution at low pressure, leaves it to act on the growth and then rinses it off gently, which is far kinder to render, paint and mortar.
Because it dries more slowly. A wall that gets little sun, sits beside trees or hedges, or falls in the shadow of the hills through winter stays damp after rain, and algae establish wherever damp lingers. Aspect matters here more than the age of the house.
Yes, where the paint is sound. We check the coating first, because flaking or chalking paint will not be improved by cleaning and may come away further. If redecoration is what the wall needs, we will tell you at the site visit.
Yes, with care. The solution does the work, so there is no jet aimed at the joints, and the rinse is gentle. Pointing that is already loose or missing is pointed out to you rather than washed further.
That depends on the wall. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment applied after the clean typically protects for between 12 and 24 months, and a shaded wall close under the hills is likely to sit towards the shorter end of that range.
No, not when the preparation is done properly. Planting and lawns near the wall are covered or wetted down before application and rinsed off afterwards, and we allow time for that on every job rather than rushing it.
Yes. The black streaking that runs down uPVC fascias, soffits and gutters comes off with the right solution at low pressure, and it is often worth doing alongside the walls so the roofline and elevations finish evenly.
