Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
High Wycombe climbs both sides of the Wye valley, so two similar houses a street apart can face the sun or sit in shade all day. We soft wash brick, stone and render at low pressure and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Why it matters
Two kinds of staining are common here. Close to busy roads, walls collect a film of traffic dirt that sits on the surface. Further up the valley sides, under trees, the problem is living growth: algae, moss and lichen with a hold in the material. A soft wash deals with both, but the solution and dwell time are chosen for what is actually on the wall, which we identify at a free site visit.

High Wycombe homes
The town follows the valley of the River Wye, with housing climbing the slopes on both sides. That shape matters for walls. A terrace on a south-facing slope dries quickly after rain, while one on the opposite side, or tucked under the wooded upper slopes, may get little direct sun at all and stays green on its shaded faces.
Much of the older housing near the centre dates from the town's growth in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with brick terraces, stone or painted details and slate roofs. Further out there are inter-war and post-war estates, larger detached homes on leafier roads and newer developments with render and cladding, so the surfaces we meet are as varied as the slopes.
Brick terraces
Brick terraces carry most of their staining in predictable places: below sills, under copings, along string courses and on the faces that see least sun. Stone or painted details, such as lintels, sills and bay windows, tend to mark more heavily than the brick around them because they hold water on their top faces.
Older brick can have a softer core behind its fired face, and the mortar may be original. A low-pressure solution treats the growth, and a gentle rinse leaves the face and joints as they were.
Town-centre grime
Walls along main roads collect a grey film from exhaust and road spray that has nothing to do with algae. It sits on the surface rather than growing into it, but it dulls render and brick and gives growth something to cling to.
We identify whether a wall is carrying grime, growth or both, and adjust the solution and dwell time accordingly. Marks from rust, salts or failing paint are a different matter, and we say so rather than promise to remove them.
Steep plots
Many plots here are steep, stepped or tightly packed, with walls that drop away below the garden or rise above a narrow path. Soft washing suits these sites because the solution is applied at low pressure, often from poles or a tower, rather than relying on someone standing close with a jet.
Where access is the limit, we tell you at the site visit and explain how we would reach the wall safely, or whether it cannot sensibly be done without scaffolding already in place.
After cleaning
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to every soft wash once the wall has been rinsed clean. It targets the spores and residual growth that cleaning leaves and helps reduce how quickly algae and staining reappear.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how it is maintained, so a north-facing terrace under the wooded slopes is likely to need attention before an open, sunny one.
Our method
The first stage happens before anything is booked. The rest follows in the same order on every property, adjusted for the material and the slope.
At a free site visit we identify each surface, tell grime apart from growth, check joints and coatings, and work out how to reach every elevation on the slope.
Planting, lawns, windows and painted woodwork are covered or soaked with clean water, and on sloping gardens we plan where the rinse water will run.
The solution is applied evenly at low pressure, matched to grime, growth or both, and left to act for as long as the surface needs.
The wall is rinsed from the top down at a pressure suited to brick, stone or render, with the planting below rinsed clean as well.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean surface, then we review the walls with you and explain what may still lighten as it weathers.
Know the limits
Soft washing makes a significant improvement to walls stained by growth or grime, and long-established marks often continue to lighten afterwards. It is cleaning, not building work.
Why us
We tell traffic film from algae and lichen before choosing a solution, so the treatment fits what is really on the wall.
Older brick, original mortar and stone details are cleaned by the solution and a gentle rinse, never scoured with a jet.
Steep gardens, tight frontages and stepped plots are planned for at the site visit, with poles or towers chosen to suit the site.
Fully insured operatives, based nearby in Marlow, who protect your planting and leave the site tidy and rinsed.
Nearby
We also work in Hazlemere, Downley, Hughenden Valley, Loudwater, Flackwell Heath and Wooburn Green. Hillside plots and mixed housing are common across them, so access and aspect are part of every assessment.

Questions
Yes. Traffic film is a surface deposit, and a suitable solution at low pressure lifts it from sound render. Where the wall also carries algae, both are treated together. Marks from rust or salts are different, and we point them out.
It is usually aspect. On a valley slope, houses facing north or sitting under trees get little direct sun and stay damp after rain, while those facing south dry out quickly. Algae, moss and lichen establish where a wall stays wet.
Usually, yes. Soft washing is applied at low pressure from poles or a tower, which helps on stepped and sloping plots. If access genuinely limits what can be done safely, we tell you at the site visit.
Generally, yes, after an assessment. Older brick and stone are cleaned with a solution and a gentle rinse rather than a jet, so the fired face and the joints are left alone. Spalled brick or crumbling mortar needs repair first.
No, provided they are protected. Planting is covered or soaked with clean water before any solution is applied, then rinsed again afterwards, and on sloping gardens we plan where the run-off goes.
Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how it is maintained. Shaded, north-facing walls on the valley sides usually reach the end of that period first.
