Patio Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Gardens in High Wycombe are often built into a hillside, so a patio may come in tiers, with steps, retaining walls and paths between them. We clean every level to suit its stone and treat growth where water gathers.

First things first
On level ground a patio is one surface. On a hillside it is often several, joined by steps and held up by walls, with rain running from one level to the next. At a free site visit we look at how each part is built, where water travels and collects, and how we will reach every level.

High Wycombe gardens
High Wycombe grew along the valley of the River Wye, and its housing climbs steeply up both sides, from older terraces near the centre to family homes, larger detached houses and newer estates on the higher ground. Many gardens are cut into the slope, which is why stepped terraces, raised seating areas and retaining walls are such a familiar sight here.
Wooded hillsides and garden trees add shade, and the slope means rainwater does not stay where it falls. It runs down across the paving, carrying soil and debris with it, and settles at the bottom of each level. Those lower edges, the treads of steps and the foot of every wall are where algae and moss take hold first.
Levels and steps
Each level of a stepped garden is treated as a patio in its own right, because it may be a different material, a different age or in a different light. We work from the top down, so dirty water and loosened debris are never washed back onto areas already cleaned.
Steps get particular attention. Treads that stay damp grow slippery algae quickly, and their front edges are the most easily chipped part of any paving. They are cleaned at low pressure, with care along the nosings, and treated so the green film is not simply rinsed off and left to return.
Water on a slope
Cleaning water follows the same path as rain. On a hillside it can run into borders, gather against a lower wall or find its way towards a neighbour's garden. Before we start, we plan where it will drain and protect planting on the way.
The same flow explains why some areas discolour faster than others.
Black spot and lichen
Natural stone on shaded slopes often carries black spot, a lichen that roots into the pores rather than sitting on the surface, which is why a hard wash leaves it behind. We treat it with a specialist application alongside controlled cleaning.
Once each level is clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to target the live growth remaining in the stone and help slow its return. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, how wet the slope stays, the paving and its upkeep. Where jointing has washed out or broken down, we re-sand it so the slabs stay firm.
How we work
The method for each level is agreed at the site visit, along with access and where the cleaning water will drain.
We identify the paving on each tier, inspect steps, joints and walls, trace where water runs and settles, and plan access through side paths and gates. A clear quotation follows.
Furniture and pots are moved, borders below the paving are protected, and we decide where cleaning water will go so it is not left pooling against walls.
Each level is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure for its material, working downhill so nothing already finished is splashed or muddied by the work above it.
Black spot gets its specialist application, washed-out joints are re-sanded, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes onto the clean stone. We then walk the garden with you.
Good to know
Most stepped patios improve significantly, and we aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows. Cleaning is not structural work, though, and a hillside garden can hide problems that only show once the dirt has gone.
Why us
Access, drainage and the order of work are agreed before we arrive, so tiered gardens are cleaned methodically rather than improvised.
Step treads and edges are cleaned at low pressure and treated for algae, because they are where people slip and where stone chips.
Black spot and lichen get a specialist application and Chiltern EverGuard™, rather than more pressure aimed at the stone.
Our operatives are fully insured, and you are walked through the finished garden and told exactly what was applied where.
Nearby
We also clean patios in the neighbouring areas, including Hazlemere, Downley, Hughenden Valley, Loudwater, Flackwell Heath and Booker. Many of those gardens sit on the same valley sides, so slope and shade shape the work there too.

Questions
Yes. Steep gardens with steps, side paths and narrow gates are common here, and we plan how equipment and hoses will reach each level at the site visit. If access is genuinely the limiting factor, we tell you then.
Not if it is planned properly. On a slope we decide beforehand where water will drain, protect planting below the paving and work from the top level down. Run-off is part of the method, not an afterthought.
Step treads stay damp after rain, often sit in shade and catch soil washing down from above, so algae settles there quickly. Cleaning and treatment make them safer underfoot, and keeping them swept helps the result last.
Yes, usually to a significant degree. It needs a specialist application as well as controlled cleaning, because the lichen grows inside the stone. Long-established marks may leave a faint trace, and heavily affected stone can need a second visit.
Only if agreed. A patio clean covers the paving, steps and paths. Walls are a different surface with their own method, so if they need attention we discuss it at the site visit rather than treating them as part of the patio.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. Lower, shadier levels that stay wet tend towards the shorter end, and open upper terraces towards the longer. It helps reduce regrowth rather than stopping it entirely.
