Sandstone Patio Cleaning and Repointing in Princes Risborough
Indian sandstone patio cleaning in Princes Risborough: black spot and algae treated, back steps relaid and repointed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™.
Patio Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Many patios in Great Missenden have been part of the garden for years, and the stone has aged with it. We clean to reveal that character rather than strip it away, treat black spot properly and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our view
Weathering is not all dirt. Some of it is the colour and texture natural stone gains over many years, and some is growth that can and should come off. The skill lies in telling the two apart. At a free site visit we identify the paving, look at how it has aged and explain what a clean will reveal, what it will remove and what will stay.

The village setting
Great Missenden lies in the valley of the River Misbourne, with wooded Chiltern slopes rising on either side. Homes tucked under those slopes see less direct sun in winter, and paving there can stay wet long after a shower has passed. Established gardens add shade of their own from hedges, old trees and climbers trained against the house.
The housing runs from traditional village properties near the centre to larger family homes and countryside houses beyond it. Many have patios laid long ago in sandstone or limestone, now muted to a uniform grey or green, while newer homes nearby often have large porcelain slabs that show every streak.
Older sandstone
Indian sandstone is laid for its variation: warm buffs, greys and rusty streaks, often within a single flag. Years of algae and grime flatten that into one dull tone. A careful clean brings the variation back, and with it details the dirt had been hiding, such as mineral marks or a slab replaced long ago.
We treat that as part of the stone rather than something to scrub at until every flag matches. The aim is restored stone that still looks laid by hand, not a uniform surface that looks out of place in a mature garden.
Limestone
Limestone is generally softer than sandstone or concrete, and its pale face makes any uneven technique easy to spot afterwards. We clean it slowly, at low pressure, and rely on treatment where the growth needs more than water.
Etching or wear already in the surface is noted at the site visit, because no clean can rebuild stone that has been worn away or chemically altered. Telling you that beforehand is better than working at a mark that will not shift.
Black spot
Black spot is a lichen living within the pores of natural stone, and once established it outlasts ordinary washing. We deal with the visible marks through controlled cleaning combined with a specialist application. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment then goes on once the patio is clean, working into the porous surface to target the growth that remains.
Pressure alone does not reach the organism at its source and puts the stone under needless strain. Heavily marked stone can need a second visit, which we raise at the assessment.
Porcelain
Porcelain hardly absorbs anything, so it cleans up readily. The difficulty is consistency. On big, uniform slabs, a patchy rinse or a line of residue at the edges stands out the moment the surface dries.
We work across the full face of each slab, clean the joints with the same care and finish the rinse evenly. Chips, grout faults or marks left from installation are separate from cleaning, and we point them out rather than work at them.
How we work
Every stage is agreed in advance, so you know before the day what will be done to your paving and why.
At the free site visit we establish what the paving is, check its condition, joints and drainage, look at the garden around it and explain what can realistically be improved.
Furniture and pots are moved as agreed, loose debris is swept off and planting beside the paving is considered before any cleaning starts.
The surface is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure for that stone, with the technique changed for sandstone, limestone, porcelain, concrete or setts.
Black spot receives its specialist application, and sand joints that have washed out or broken down are refilled so the paving is stable underfoot again.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied once the patio is clean, and we go over the result with you, including anything we noticed that needs a repair.
Know the limits
A porcelain terrace laid last year and a sandstone patio laid decades ago will not look alike after cleaning, and they should not. We remove the growth and grime and restore the original appearance where the condition allows, while honest weathering stays visible. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, less under heavy shade.
Why us
We clean natural stone to reveal its variation and texture, never to force every flag into one flat, artificial colour.
Softer stone and weak joints are worked at the lowest pressure that achieves the result, decided after we have seen them.
If a mark is in the stone itself, or a slab needs relaying, we say so instead of washing it harder.
Every job is carried out by fully insured operatives, and we walk you through the finished patio before leaving the garden.
Nearby
We also clean patios in Prestwood, Little Missenden, South Heath, The Lee, Ballinger and Hyde Heath. Gardens there share many of the same shaded, wooded conditions, and each is looked at in person before we suggest a method.

Questions
No. Limestone is softer than most paving, so it is cleaned slowly at low pressure, with treatment doing the work where growth needs more than water. Pressure that would be fine on concrete can mark limestone in seconds.
Usually because the clean has revealed the stone's natural variation, earlier repairs or mineral marks that a uniform layer of grime had disguised. That is the material showing through, not a fault in the work. We describe what to expect at the site visit.
Yes, in most cases it can be significantly reduced. It is a lichen in the pores of the stone, so it is treated with a specialist application rather than forced off. On heavily affected flags, a second visit may be needed.
Yes. Porcelain responds well to a gentle clean. The care goes into even coverage across each slab, clean joints and a thorough final rinse, so no section dries a different shade from the next.
No. Sealing suits some stone and not others, and it alters the appearance. We will tell you whether your paving is a sensible candidate rather than adding it as a standard step.
Often, though not always fully. Organic rings usually respond well. Rust marks, or stains that have soaked into porous stone, may improve without disappearing. We look at each one before treatment and tell you what is likely.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. Location, surroundings, the paving itself and ongoing care all play a part, and a terrace under the wooded slopes will usually see growth return sooner than an open one.
