Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
In the Misbourne valley, moss often gathers first around chimneys, valleys and dormers rather than across the open slope. We look closely at those details, remove growth by hand and clean each covering at a pressure it can take.

Look closer
From the garden, a roof can look only lightly marked while moss sits packed behind the chimney, along a valley or beside a dormer cheek. Those sheltered spots dry last and collect the most debris. At a free site visit we inspect them closely, often by drone, and explain how each one would be treated.

Great Missenden roofs
Great Missenden sits in the valley of the River Misbourne, with chalk hillsides and beech woods rising on both sides. The valley holds damp air on still days, and homes tucked beneath the wooded slopes get less direct sun than those on open ground. Roofs facing into the hillside, or standing under mature trees, tend to stay wet long after a shower has passed.
The older village centre is a conservation area, with period buildings, clay tiles, slate and plenty of chimneys, while the surrounding roads and nearby villages such as Prestwood carry inter-war, post-war and newer homes, many roofed in concrete tile. Extensions and loft conversions have added dormers and valleys to a good number of houses, and each of those creates another sheltered corner for growth.
Roof details
A chimney stack blocks the wind and casts shade on the tiles behind it, so moss often thickens on its uphill side. Valleys gather run-off and debris from two slopes and can stay wet when the rest of the roof has dried. Dormer cheeks and the junctions where a roof meets a wall interrupt airflow in much the same way.
These are also the places where cleaning needs most care, because they involve leadwork, flashings, cut tiles and mortar. We work them slowly and by hand where possible, keep water running down the roof rather than into the junction, and note any flashing or mortar that looks tired.
Moss and film
Moss forms physical clumps that sit across the laps between tiles, and the sensible way to deal with it is to lift the bulk off by hand before any water is used. Algae and lichen are different: flatter, closer to the surface and, in lichen's case, bonded to it. Trying to remove all three with force would mean using far more pressure than the roof needs.
So the work is staged. Hand removal clears the cushions, a low-pressure clean or soft wash suited to the covering deals with the film, and the treatment that follows tackles what remains in the texture of the tile.
Coverings
The covering decides the method. We identify it, check its condition closely and only then agree how it will be cleaned, because the same approach is rarely right for two different materials.
Afterwards
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to every roof we clean, once the surface is clear and conditions are settled and frost-free. It penetrates the surface to target spores and residual growth, including the patches around chimneys and in valleys that tend to recolonise first, and it helps reduce the speed of regrowth.
In a wooded valley setting, protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, the covering, exposure and how the roof is maintained. As that window closes, we can reassess the roof and advise whether a further application makes sense.
The process
Each roof is worked in the same order. The methods within each stage are set by the covering and the details we found at the site visit.
We look at the roof from the ground and with a drone where useful, paying particular attention to chimneys, valleys and dormers, and show you what we see on screen.
A clear quotation and statement of works explain the method we suggest for each part of the roof and the reasons behind that choice.
Working from access equipment beside the roof, never on it, operatives lift moss from the open slopes and work patiently around stacks, valleys and abutments.
The surface is cleaned at the pressure agreed for its covering, then the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied when the weather is settled and free of frost.
Fallen moss is cleared from the gutters and the downpipes are checked before the project lead explains the work, the treatment used and the aftercare.
What to expect
Removing moss and staining usually brings a significant improvement, and it also makes the true condition of the roof easier to see. Cracked tiles, tired flashings or old ridge mortar that were hidden beneath the growth may become visible, and older roofs keep their natural variation in colour.
Where we spot a defect, we tell you so a roofer can deal with it. Cleaning does not repair it, and shaded slopes and corners will see growth return before open ones.
Why us
Chimneys, valleys, dormers and abutments are inspected and cleaned with care, not washed through at the same pace as the open slope.
The lowest pressure that achieves the result on that covering, used only after the bulk of the moss has been removed by hand.
If cleaning reveals or confirms a defect, we say so plainly and keep it separate from the cleaning work we carry out.
Fully insured operatives on suitable access equipment, with a project lead who hands the finished roof over to you in person.
Nearby
Our roof work here also reaches the villages around it, including Prestwood, Little Missenden, South Heath, The Lee, Ballinger and Hyde Heath. Several sit higher and more exposed than the valley floor, while others share its shade.

Questions
The stack shelters and shades the tiles on its uphill side, and debris collects against it. Those tiles stay damp for longer than the open slope, so moss establishes there first and often grows thickest. It is one of the areas we look at closely at the site visit.
Yes. Valleys, dormer cheeks and wall junctions are cleaned as part of the roof, by hand where possible and with care around leadwork and flashings. Any visible wear to mortar or lead is pointed out rather than disturbed.
In most cases, yes, once the tiles have been checked. Older clay varies in strength and finish, so the method is kept gentle and the aim is to keep its character. A roof that is already failing needs a roofer before any cleaning.
No. A clean roof looks markedly better, but older tiles keep their weathering and colour variation, and replacement tiles or repairs may stand out more once the growth has gone. We explain the likely finish at the site visit.
Typically for 12 to 24 months. Roofs under the wooded slopes, or heavily shaded by chimneys and trees, tend towards the shorter end, and open, sunny roofs towards the longer. We can reassess as the period comes to an end.
Not always. A drone is used where it helps us see parts of the roof that cannot be judged from the ground, such as valleys or the back of a chimney, and we share the live images with you.
Yes. Moss loosened from the roof ends up at the eaves, so we clear the gutters and check the downpipes as standard before handing the roof back to you.
