Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Chesham fills the valley of the River Chess and climbs the hillsides around it, so how high a house stands on the slope shapes how fast its roof greens. We remove moss by hand, clean to suit slate or tile and treat afterwards.

Valley and hillside
Low ground beside the river holds damp air and loses the sun early, while houses further up the valley sides dry out faster but face more wind. The same tile can age very differently a few streets apart. At a free site visit we look at the roof in its setting, then recommend a method and explain the reasoning behind it.

Chesham roofs
Chesham is an old market town set in the narrow valley of the Chess, with the ground rising quickly on either side towards Chesham Bois, Ley Hill and Chartridge. Mist gathers along the valley bottom on still mornings, and the lowest streets, around Waterside and the river, are the slowest to dry after rain. Higher up, roofs see more sun and airflow, and growth there tends to be lighter and more often lichen than moss.
The town's housing spans several centuries. Brick and flint cottages and Victorian terraces cluster near the centre, many under natural slate or clay tiles, while inter-war and post-war homes and newer estates on the higher ground mostly carry concrete tiles. Terraced and semi-detached houses raise a particular point: your roof is one section of a continuous run.
Shared roofs
On a terrace or a semi-detached pair, the roof does not stop at the party wall, but the work does. We clean your section only and take care at the boundary so that water and loosened moss are not pushed across onto the neighbouring roof or into next door's gutter. Access is often from the front, or from a rear garden reached along a narrow passage, and that is planned at the site visit rather than worked out on the day.
A cleaned section beside an untouched one will show a clear line where the two meet. If a neighbour would like their own section looked at too, we can assess it separately.
Slate and clay
Natural slate on Victorian terraces is hard-wearing, but each slate is thin, and after a century or more its nails and fixings may be tired. It is cleaned with close control from suitable access and never walked on. Clay tiles on older cottages vary from one tile to the next in finish and strength, so the method is kept gentle and their natural variation in colour is left alone.
If slates are slipping, tiles are cracked or the ridge mortar has failed, cleaning waits. We point out what we see at the site visit so that a roofer can deal with it first.
The growth
Moss needs constant moisture, which is why the valley bottom and roofs beneath trees carry the thickest cushions, packed along the tile edges and shedding into gutters every time they dry out. Lichen grows more slowly and copes with drier, brighter conditions, so it is common on open hillside roofs as small pale or yellow rosettes fixed tight to the surface.
Moss is lifted away by hand. Lichen is treated and allowed to break down rather than scraped, because scraping strips the tile's protective face and leaves it soaking up more water than it did before.
Treatment
Once the moss is off and the roof has been cleaned at low pressure or soft washed, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment. Every roof we clean receives it. The treatment works into the surface to target spores and remaining growth, and it helps slow the rate at which the roof turns green again.
On a valley-bottom terrace, protection is likely to sit towards the lower end of its typical range of 12 to 24 months, while a sunnier roof higher up the slope tends to hold out longer. It is applied only in settled, frost-free weather.
How it runs
Nothing on the day is improvised. The access, the method and the boundaries of the work are all settled at the site visit and written into the quotation.
We look at the roof from the street and garden and, where suitable, from a drone, showing you the images as we go. On a terrace we note the boundaries and the access route.
We set out the method we propose, why it suits the covering and a defined statement of works, together with a clear quotation for your section of the roof.
From access equipment positioned close to the surface, operatives lift the bulk of the moss by hand, taking care at the party wall so nothing is pushed onto the neighbouring roof.
The roof is cleaned at the pressure agreed for its covering, and the treatment goes on once the surface is clean, the weather is settled and no frost is expected.
The gutter runs are cleared of fallen moss and the downpipes checked. The project lead walks you through what was done and what to expect over the following months.
Know the limits
Most roofs look markedly better after cleaning, and we aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows. Some things cleaning cannot change, and we would rather say so before the work than after it.
Why us
On terraces and semi-detached pairs we keep water and debris to your section and plan the access route before the day of the work.
The bulk of the moss is lifted by hand before any washing, so the cleaning stage can stay gentle on slate and older clay.
A plain explanation of what we found, what we recommend and what cleaning will not fix, given before you agree to anything.
Every job is carried out by fully insured operatives from suitable access equipment, with a project lead accountable for the result.
Around the town
We also work in the villages around the town, including Chesham Bois, Ashley Green, Chartridge, Bellingdon, Ley Hill and Latimer. Most stand higher and more exposed than the valley floor, which changes how their roofs weather.

Questions
Low ground beside the Chess holds damp air and gets less direct sun, so roofs there dry slowly after rain or mist. Moss and algae establish wherever a surface stays wet, which is why the same tile higher up the valley side usually stays cleaner for longer.
Yes. We clean your section and take care at the boundary so water and debris do not cross onto the neighbouring roof or gutter. There will usually be a visible line where the cleaned section meets one that has not been done.
Usually, once its condition has been checked. We look at the slates, fixings and ridge at the site visit. Sound slate is cleaned with close control and low pressure; if slates are slipping or fixings have failed, we recommend a roofer first.
Moss forms soft cushions that hold water and can be lifted away. Lichen is flatter, grows slowly and fixes itself firmly to the tile, often as pale or yellow spots. It is treated rather than scraped, and the marks fade gradually.
No. We use access equipment and poles that put operatives close to the roof without standing on it. That protects slate and older clay tiles and lets us control the water precisely around the laps.
That depends on the setting. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment typically protects for between 12 and 24 months, with shaded, valley-floor roofs nearer the shorter end. Trees, aspect and maintenance all influence how quickly growth returns.
No. Cleaning removes growth from the surface but does not mend cracked tiles, failed flashing or worn mortar. Where we spot a defect at the site visit, we tell you so it can be repaired before or separately from the clean.
