Driveway Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Chesham sits in the valley of the River Chess, with homes climbing the slopes on either side. A drive on the damp valley floor and one up on open ground age quite differently, so we look at yours before choosing a method.

The approach
Our rule on every driveway is the lowest possible pressure and the least chemical that will achieve the right result. Sometimes that means a second application or a slower, more considered process. We think that is better than the quickest, harshest approach, because it protects the surface, the planting beside it and the drains the water ends up in.

Local conditions
The town grew up along the Chess valley, and the river still runs through its lower streets. Low ground beside water holds damp air and loses the sun early in winter, so drives on the valley floor dry slowly after rain. Algae spreads across them as a green or dark film, and a surface that looks merely dull in summer can turn slippery by November.
Climb out towards the higher neighbourhoods and the picture changes. Drives there are more open to wind and sun, so growth is often lighter, but weathering, road film and fading show more. Between the two sit plenty of sloping frontages where water runs quickly towards the road. The town's mix of period cottages, brick family homes and newer developments also brings block paving, tarmac, concrete and stone into the same few streets.
Slippery surfaces
Algae needs moisture and very little else. On a drive that stays damp for most of the day it settles into the texture of the surface, darkens it and, in the wetter months, makes it slick underfoot and under tyres. Moss follows into the joints and along the edges where water lingers longest. Sweeping only moves what sits on top.
We take the growth off with controlled cleaning and then finish the drive with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, our own treatment, which helps reduce how quickly algae and moss come back. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and on a damp, low-lying drive it is likely to sit towards the shorter end.
Sloping frontages
A clean releases a surprising amount of material: silt, broken-down moss, old jointing sand and the residue of whatever was growing. On a sloping drive, all of it heads downhill. Left to its own devices it collects in the channel drain at the bottom, spills across the pavement or settles back onto the lower paving as a brown tide line.
So before work starts, we look at the fall of the drive and where its water goes, and plan the order of cleaning around it. Debris is gathered as it is released, edges beside planting are worked with care, and treatment is applied in measured amounts rather than flooded across the surface.
Surfaces
With so many building periods side by side, the surface next door is often nothing like yours. We identify the material at the site visit, and heated water is used only where the surface tolerates it.
How it runs
The order of work stays constant. The pressure, the products and the time spent in each stage change with what we found at the site visit.
We identify the surface, check its fall, edges and drainage points, and show you the stains we expect to improve as well as any that may only fade.
Before any cleaning, we decide the working direction and how debris will be gathered, so silt and old sand do not end up in a drain, a border or the road.
The surface is cleaned evenly with the least force that works, and growth in the joints and along the edges is cleared. Heavier staining gets targeted treatment rather than a harder jet.
On block paving, the dried surface is compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied across the cleaned driveway, and we walk the finished surface with you, explaining what was done and how best to look after it.
Before you book
A cleaned driveway looks markedly better and is safer underfoot, but it is still the same surface. Cleaning does not level sunken areas, mend cracks or restore tarmac that has worn thin. In the dampest parts of the valley, growth returns sooner than on open ground, so a little care between cleans makes a real difference.
Why us
We start gently and add only what the surface needs, accepting a second application where that protects the material better than force would.
Water and debris are managed around slopes, drains and planting, so the clean does not simply move the problem somewhere else.
Compaction and Chiltern Polymeric Sand in every joint come as standard on block-paved restorations, never as an add-on.
Fully insured, with the method explained before work starts and the finished drive checked with you at the end.
Nearby
Our driveway work extends to the villages around the town: Chesham Bois to the south, Ashley Green, Chartridge and Bellingdon on the higher ground, and Botley and Ley Hill to the east. Most sit more exposed than the valley floor, which changes the weathering more than the method.

Questions
Usually because of algae. It forms a thin film on surfaces that stay damp, and on low ground near the river a drive can stay damp for days after rain. Removing the film and applying Chiltern EverGuard™ helps, and clearing leaves promptly slows its return.
No. We use the least chemical necessary to achieve the right result, applied in measured amounts. If a stubborn patch needs more, we prefer a second application to a stronger mix, which protects the surface and the planting around it.
Yes. We plan the working direction around the slope and gather silt, moss and old sand as it is released, so it does not wash into the road, a channel drain or across the pavement at the bottom.
Yes. Organic growth and staining are removed with care over the decorative colour and finish. Where the existing sealer has started to fade, dull or wear away, we offer a resealing service as well.
Often, to a large degree. Specialist treatment significantly reduces most oil staining, but very old marks that have soaked into concrete or block paving may not lift completely. We tell you what to expect before we start.
That depends on the surface, the shade and how it is cared for. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and a low, damp drive will usually sit closer to the shorter end of that range.
