Gutter Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Chesham sits low in the valley of the River Chess, where damp air keeps gutter debris wet and heavy for much of the year. We clear the full run, flush the downpipes and tell you plainly what we found.

The weak point
A long gutter can collect rain from a large stretch of roof, yet all of it has to leave through one small outlet. Moss and leaf fragments drift towards that low point and pack together there. A gutter that looks empty along most of its length can still overflow in the first heavy shower, which is why we finish by running water through rather than by looking.

Valley conditions
Chesham grew up along the valley of the River Chess, and the town climbs the slopes on either side. Low ground beside the river holds damp air and sees less sun, so gutters there dry slowly and the debris in them stays sodden and heavy. A little higher up the hill the same kind of house tends to stay cleaner, but it catches more wind and more blown leaves.
The housing is a mix of period cottages, older terraced streets near the centre, larger detached homes on the edges of town and newer family developments. That brings every sort of gutter, from original cast iron on some older houses to uPVC on most later homes and extensions, and each needs handling according to its age and condition.
Terraces
On a terrace, one gutter line often runs across several houses, with each home's downpipe taking water from its own stretch. A blockage next door can push water back along the shared run, and debris left at one end can drift towards the next outlet.
When we clear a terraced house, we clear its section thoroughly, check where its outlet sits in relation to the neighbours' and tell you if a problem appears to come from beyond your boundary. Some owners arrange for neighbours to have their gutters done on the same day, which makes sense where the run is continuous. We only work on the parts of a building we have been asked to clear.
More than autumn
Autumn leaf fall is the obvious load, but established trees shed blossom, seed and fine twigs through spring and summer too. On sheltered properties that material mixes with roof grit and moss and settles into a compact layer well before the next autumn. Roofs carrying moss add to it whatever the season, because moss loosens in dry spells and washes down with the next rain.
The result is that some gutters in the valley refill faster than a once-a-year clear allows for. We look at what overhangs each roof slope at the site visit and suggest an interval based on that rather than on the calendar.
Older gutters
Original cast iron guttering on period houses can keep working for a very long time, but it ages in ways uPVC does not. Joints rust, sealant dries out and brackets can drop as their fixings corrode into the fascia.
We clear cast iron carefully, without levering at sections that are holding, and we report rust, failed joints and sagging lengths rather than disturbing something that needs a specialist. Cleaning often makes those faults easier to see, which is useful to know before the winter rain arrives.
On the outside
The outer face of a uPVC gutter collects a green and black film where water has spilled over or where damp debris has sat against it. We wash that off as part of the visit, together with the fascia behind. A clean face also makes the next overflow easier to spot, because fresh streaking shows exactly which section has been struggling. Persistent marks at one joint can point to a length worth keeping an eye on.
Our method
Every visit follows the same order, adjusted to the house and the gutters on it.
We follow the roofline round the whole house, including rear extensions and lean-tos that cannot be seen from the street, and note each outlet, downpipe and visible defect.
Wet leaves, moss and silt are drawn out of the channel with a gutter vacuum on a pole, worked from the ground where the layout allows, so nothing is dropped into the garden.
Water is run along the channel and down each downpipe. If it drains freely, the job is done; if it backs up, the restriction is lower down and we tell you.
The outer gutter face and fascia are washed of green streaking, and loose brackets or parted joints are re-seated where that counts as a minor repair.
You receive a short summary of the roofline, covering any rust, cracks, sagging lengths or slipped tiles we noticed while we were working at the eaves.
Worth knowing
Once a gutter is clear, it can carry water as well as its design and condition allow. Cleaning will not seal a cracked section, replace corroded cast iron or correct a run that has lost its fall. Nor does it reach blockages in an underground drain.
On the valley floor, where debris stays wet and trees are close, expect gutters to need clearing again. We will tell you how quickly yours filled so you can plan sensibly.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
Gutters, outlets, hoppers and downpipes are treated as one route, so the visit ends with water draining, not just an empty-looking channel.
Older cast iron and long-standing fixings are cleared gently and reported on, rather than pulled at in the hope of a tidier finish.
Debris goes into the vacuum, not onto the paths or into planted borders, and it is taken away with us at the end.
Our operatives are fully insured, and the access for each run is settled at the site visit before the work is booked.
Around the town
We also clear gutters in Chesham Bois, Ashley Green, Chartridge, Bellingdon, Botley and Ley Hill. Most of these sit higher and more exposed than the town centre, so their gutters tend to fill with wind-blown leaves rather than valley damp.

Questions
Yes. We clear your section of the run and check its outlet. Where the gutter continues across neighbouring houses, we tell you if water or debris appears to be arriving from next door, because that part of the problem sits outside your boundary.
Yes. Moss loosens from the tiles, washes down and gathers at the outlet, where it holds water like a sponge. A mossy roof can keep refilling a gutter all year, even on a house with open sky around it.
Yes, depending on its condition. Cast iron is cleared carefully, and rust, failed joints or dropped brackets are reported rather than disturbed. Sections that are holding well are left exactly as they are.
Usually because the outlet or the top of the downpipe is restricted, which cannot be seen from below. Less often the gutter has lost its fall or is too small for the roof area above it. Flushing after the clear tells us which.
Often, yes. The vacuum can be worked from the ground over many conservatories without touching the glass. Where it cannot reach safely, a different access method is planned at the site visit rather than attempted on the day.
It is drawn into the vacuum as it leaves the channel, so it does not fall onto paths, gravel or borders. Everything collected leaves the property with us when the work is finished.
Yes. The outer face of the gutter and the fascia behind it are washed of green streaking once the channel has been cleared, which also makes any future overflow easier to spot.
