One Home, Two Different Problems

Ash came to Chiltern Surface Co because the two most visible surfaces on his home in Stoke Mandeville, on the edge of Aylesbury, had deteriorated at the same time. The roof was carrying moss and lichen, and the driveway had darkened with algae and black spot, with weeds growing through failing joints.

Roof tiles and block paving respond very differently to cleaning, so no single method would have been right. We treated the house as two linked jobs, each with its own approach, and one standard of finish.

Drone Roof Survey Before Any Work

The roof work began with a high-resolution drone survey of every slope. It shows the spread of moss and lichen, the condition of the tiles and anything that needs noting before work starts.

The footage was reviewed with Ash on site, so he could see exactly what we could see, and the access and cleaning method were chosen for this particular roof.

Concrete Tile Roof, Cleaned at Low Pressure

A scaffold tower put Chiltern Surface Co technicians right up at the roofline, close to every course. That closeness is what lets the roof be worked at the lowest effective pressure, with the most detail possible.

Moss, lichen and organic staining were lifted from the concrete tiles with a rotary roof-cleaning head on an extension lance, paying close attention to the tile overlaps, the verges and the edges where debris collects.

Deep Block Paved Driveway Cleaning

The three-car driveway needed a more mechanical process. Years of dirt, algae and black spot were lifted from the blocks with a rotary surface cleaner, which cleans evenly without striping the paving.

Weeds and the old, degraded jointing sand were cleared out of the joints at the same time. A surface-only clean would have left that jointing problem in place, so the driveway was prepared for a complete re-sand.

Block Paving Re-Sanding and Plate Compaction

Once the blocks and joints were dry, a first layer of polymeric jointing sand was brushed into the paving.

A plate compactor then settled the blocks and drove the sand deep into the joints — filling the lower voids, tightening the interlock and making room for a second application.

Second Fill and Activation

After compaction, every joint was topped up a second time and the loose sand was cleared from the face of the blocks.

The polymeric sand was then activated with a controlled mist of water. As it cures, it bonds into a firm joint that resists weeds, ants, erosion and washout far better than loose traditional jointing sand.

“The sand between the blocks is what stabilises a block paved driveway. Skip the re-compaction and the second re-sanding, and that stabilisation is compromised.”

Chiltern EverGuard™ on the Roof and Driveway

Surface cleaning is not enough. Moss, lichen and algae do not just sit on a surface — they live in its pores, and whatever is left inside will grow back.

Chiltern EverGuard™ is a biocide that penetrates the pores of the material, kills the growth living inside it and inhibits regrowth. Once the cleaning stages were complete, it was applied across the roof and the driveway.

On the block paving it also helps hold back the return of black spot.

“Growth doesn’t live on a surface — it lives in it. Cleaning alone doesn’t deal with that, which is why the job isn’t finished until it’s protected.”

Roof and Driveway, Cleaned and Protected

Before · the same roof on the first morning

The roof was cleaned and protected, and the driveway deeply cleaned and stabilised with a new bonded jointing system.

Each surface was then treated with Chiltern EverGuard™ and the surrounding areas cleaned down, so the property was left tidy and protected. From the air, the cleaned roof now stands apart from the untreated roofs either side of it.
