Project Transformation

Slate Roof Soft Washing in Marlow

Lichen and algae had dulled the slate on a timber-framed Marlow property. Soft washing from a tower brought the stone back without walking the roof or disturbing a single slate.

About the project

The transformation

Every roof cleaning project begins with a detailed drone inspection. This allowed us to assess the condition of the slate, identify areas of heavier moss and organic growth, and document any visible pre-existing damage before work began. We then explained our findings to the client and confirmed the safest and most appropriate cleaning method for the roof.

Professional scaffolding was installed to provide our technicians with safe, controlled access to the roofline. This allowed the team to complete the work securely while avoiding unnecessary movement across the slate tiles, helping to protect the roof throughout the cleaning process. Using specialist low-pressure roof-cleaning equipment and a compact surface-cleaning system, we carefully removed the accumulated moss, dirt and organic build-up from the slate. The pressure and cleaning method were carefully controlled throughout, allowing us to achieve a thorough result without subjecting the tiles to unnecessarily aggressive treatment. Particular attention was given to tile overlaps, edges and other areas where moss and debris commonly collect. Following the cleaning process, the roof received an application of Chiltern EverGuard™, our professional surface protection treatment. Chiltern EverGuard™ penetrates the surface to help protect against the regrowth of moss, algae and lichen, keeping the roof cleaner for longer. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the property's location, surrounding environment and ongoing maintenance. The treatment continues working in the weeks and months following application, helping remaining organic staining and established lichen gradually break down and release from the slate. Once the roof cleaning was complete, all gutters were thoroughly cleared of moss and debris. Each downpipe was then checked to ensure rainwater could drain freely away from the property, leaving the complete roof drainage system clean and functioning as intended.

The completed project left the slate roof looking considerably cleaner, better maintained and professionally protected. With the moss and organic contamination removed, the gutters flowing freely and Chiltern EverGuard™ in place, the roof will continue to improve as the treatment reaches its full effectiveness.

Step by step

How this project was restored

Every project follows a careful, surface-specific process — here’s exactly how we approached this one.

  1. Assessing the roof before work began
    01

    Detailed Drone Roof Inspection

Every roof cleaning project begins with a detailed drone inspection. This allowed us to assess the condition of the slate, identify areas of heavier moss and organic growth, and document any visible pre-existing damage before work began. 2. Providing controlled access to the roofline

  4. Providing ongoing protection for the cleaned slate
    04

    Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment

Following the cleaning process, the roof received an application of Chiltern EverGuard™, our professional surface protection treatment. Gutter Clearing and Downpipe Checks

Once the roof cleaning was complete, all gutters were thoroughly cleared of moss and debris. Each downpipe was then checked to ensure rainwater could drain freely away from the property, leaving the complete roof drainage system clean and functioning as intended.
