Sandstone patio cleaning and repointing in Oxford: progressive black spot removal, loose slab repairs, Chiltern EverGuard™ and a complete resin repoint.
Patio Cleaning · 8 towns
This part of Oxfordshire mixes riverside towns, beech-covered hills and a city built largely of stone. Cleaning a patio here starts with knowing the material, because softer paving holds its staining inside the surface and needs patience rather than force.

Patio Cleaning, county-wide
Much of the paving we meet in Oxfordshire is porous: limestone, soft sandstone and older flags that have weathered for decades. Staining and lichen sit inside stone like that rather than on top of it, and the river valleys and wooded hills keep it damp. The combination rewards a slow, treatment-led clean and punishes a hurried one, so we look closely before we recommend anything.
The county's stone
Oxfordshire has a long tradition of building in limestone, and older gardens still have pale, softer flags laid behind period houses. Limestone reacts with acidic cleaning products, which can etch and dull its face, and it marks easily if the pressure is raised to hurry a job. It is cleaned slowly, with compatible products doing most of the work.
Later homes brought other materials. Post-war estates tend to have concrete slabs, which tolerate firmer cleaning, while recent developments favour Indian sandstone and porcelain. Sandstone is where black spot takes hold most readily. Porcelain absorbs almost nothing, so growth lifts easily, but any unevenness in the clean shows across its large, flat slabs.
Along the river
The Thames links much of the area we cover, flowing past Oxford, where the Cherwell joins it, then on by Wallingford and through the Goring Gap to Henley-on-Thames. Gardens along that corridor stay cool and damp, mist lingers on still mornings and paving can remain wet well into the afternoon. The old market towns add enclosed, walled gardens where sun reaches a patio for only a few hours a day.
Hills and beech woods
To the east the Chiltern escarpment rises behind Watlington, and the high, wooded ground runs on past Nettlebed towards Henley-on-Thames. Gardens beneath the scarp lose the sun early on winter afternoons, and beech woods drop a heavy layer of leaves every autumn. Paving there stays damp for long spells, and growth returns sooner than on open ground.
Older homes on this side are often brick and flint, with chalk clunch in places, and their patios run right up to those walls. We keep pressure and treatment off the masonry, deal with black spot by specialist application, then apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which typically helps reduce regrowth for between 12 and 24 months depending on shade, surface and upkeep.

On porous paving the order matters: identify first, treat before forcing, protect last.
At a free site visit we confirm whether the patio is limestone, sandstone, concrete or porcelain, check its condition and joints, and explain honestly what cleaning is likely to achieve.
Treatments are chosen for the stone in front of us. Limestone and other soft paving never receive products that would etch it, and strength is set to the growth actually present.
Controlled water at the lowest pressure that works lifts algae, moss and grime. On porous stone the treatment does the heavy work, so the lance is not left to roughen the surface.
Black spot is treated with a specialist application, and very heavy marking may need a second visit. Washed-out joints are refilled with sand so the paving is stable underfoot.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied once the paving is clean. We then explain how shade, leaf fall and everyday use will affect the patio and when it is worth looking at it again.
Why us
Nothing is agreed until we know what the patio is made of, how sound it is and exactly what is growing on its surface.
Limestone and soft sandstone are cleaned slowly at controlled pressure, with treatment doing the heavy work so the surface keeps its texture and character.
Near the Thames and its tributaries, rinse water and treatments are kept away from banks, ponds and planting from the start of the job to the finish.
A clear quotation follows the visit, along with a straight answer about what will lift, what may remain and what needs repair rather than cleaning.

Questions
Limestone is soft and porous, so dirt, algae and lichen work into its surface instead of sitting on top, and it reacts badly to acidic products. Porcelain absorbs very little, so growth stays on the face and lifts readily; the skill there lies in an even finish.
No. A careful clean removes growth and grime but leaves the weathered colour and texture that natural stone gains over decades. If you hope an old terrace will look freshly laid, we will explain why that is not realistic and not good for the stone.
Usually. Paving in damp riverside gardens stays wet longer after rain, and algae comes back sooner there than on open, higher ground. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment helps slow that for typically 12 to 24 months, with riverside and heavily shaded sites at the shorter end.
Yes. We clean the patio and paths and keep water, spray and treatment well away from the thatch, soft brick, flint and lime mortar around them. We do not clean thatch itself; that is a thatcher's work.
Almost certainly black spot, a lichen that roots into porous stone. Pressure alone will not shift it and risks scarring the slab. We treat it with a specialist application, and very heavily marked paving may need a second visit to bring it back as far as it will go.
Sometimes. Sealing suits some stone and not others, and it can alter the colour and finish of the surface. We look at your paving and tell you honestly whether it is a good candidate before suggesting it.
