Sandstone Patio Cleaning and Repointing in Princes Risborough
Indian sandstone patio cleaning in Princes Risborough: black spot and algae treated, back steps relaid and repointed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™.
Patio Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Watlington lies beneath the Chiltern escarpment, where hill shade and tree cover keep many gardens damp. We clean patios at a pressure the paving can stand, treat black spot properly and take extra care where paving meets old brick and flint.

Our approach
Paving is rarely the most delicate thing in a garden. Beside it there may be old brick walls, flint panels, soft lime mortar, timber and planting, all within reach of the spray. At a free site visit we look at the patio and its surroundings together, then explain the method, the pressure and the protection we would use.

Watlington gardens
Watlington sits at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, with the wooded escarpment rising close behind it. Gardens nearest the hills and the trees lose the sun for part of the day, and beech and other mature trees drop leaves that lie on paving and stain it as they break down. Shaded, damp paving is where algae, moss and lichen do best.
The town's older buildings, many within the conservation area around its historic streets, are largely red brick, often paired with flint, with render, timber framing and local chalk clunch appearing too. Patios behind them frequently meet those materials directly, in garden walls, steps and raised beds. Newer homes on the edge of town more often have sandstone, porcelain or concrete paving.
Boundaries
The paving may tolerate a controlled clean that the wall beside it would not. Soft brick faces, flint panels set in lime mortar and chalk clunch can all be marked or eroded by water aimed carelessly at them.
So the method changes at the edge. The lance is angled away from the masonry, the pressure comes down near the wall line and the base of the wall is rinsed rather than cleaned. If a wall itself needs attention, that is a separate conversation, held before anything is agreed.
Leaf fall
Leaves lying on paving through autumn leave brown marks as they break down, and the debris they shed feeds moss in the joints. On porous sandstone those marks can sink a little way into the stone. Most organic staining lifts with cleaning and treatment; very old marks may only lighten.
Because shade and leaf fall return every year, a patio close to trees will need attention sooner than an open one, and regular sweeping makes a real difference between cleans.
Black spot
The scattered dark dots on natural stone are black spot, a lichen rooted in the pores of the slab. Turning up the pressure tends to roughen the stone while leaving the growth behind.
Our approach is controlled cleaning with a specialist application for the visible marks, followed by the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment to reach the live growth within the stone and slow its return. Long-established black spot can need a second visit, which we flag at the site visit.
Paving types
The material decides how the clean is set up. We identify it at the site visit and agree the approach with you before anything is cleaned.
Step by step
Each stage is planned at the site visit, including how we will work at the edges where the patio meets walls and planting.
We identify the paving and jointing, the type of growth and staining, and the walls, steps and borders around it, then explain what we expect to lift.
Planting, doors, windows and softer masonry next to the patio are considered first, and anything that needs covering or rinsing is dealt with before cleaning begins.
The patio is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure for its material, with the pressure reduced and the angle changed as we approach walls and edges.
Black spot and stubborn growth receive a specialist application, and joints that have washed out or broken down are re-sanded so the paving is firm underfoot.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied once the surface is clean. The surrounding area is rinsed and left tidy, and we explain how to look after the patio.
Before you book
The usual result is a significant improvement in colour, grip and the look of the joints. Cleaning does not repair cracked slabs, loose pointing or a failed base, and long-standing staining in porous stone can remain. In a garden shaded by the hills and trees, growth will return in time, and the treatment slows that rather than stopping it.
Why us
Older brick, flint and clunch next to a patio are worked around with reduced pressure and a careful angle, so the paving is cleaned and the walls are left alone.
Pressure is chosen for the paving once it has been identified, and growth that pressure cannot reach is treated instead of forced.
You know what is included, what is likely to lift and what may remain before you agree to anything.
Fully insured operatives carry out the work, and the area around the patio is left tidy when we finish.
Nearby
From Watlington we also clean patios in Pyrton, Shirburn, Cuxham, Lewknor, Britwell Salome and Christmas Common. Several of these sit close under the hills or among woodland, so shade and leaf fall shape the assessment there too.

Questions
Yes. We clean the paving and treat the wall as something to protect, reducing pressure near it and directing water away from the flint and mortar. If the wall itself needs cleaning, we discuss it separately.
Usually, yes. Most organic marks from leaves lift with cleaning and treatment. Marks that have sat in porous stone for a long time may lighten rather than disappear, and we tell you at the site visit which ones those are likely to be.
Because they rarely dry out. Shade from the hills and trees, leaf litter in the joints and slow drying after rain give algae and moss everything they need. Open, sunny paving in the same garden usually stays clearer for longer.
Yes, once the patio is clean. It targets growth left in the surface and helps slow regrowth. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and a heavily shaded garden is likely to sit towards the shorter end.
Yes, in most cases it can be reduced significantly with a specialist application alongside controlled cleaning. Long-established black spot on older stone may need a second visit, and a faint trace can remain.
Yes. Porcelain usually cleans well because it is far less porous than natural stone. The work is in getting an even finish across the slabs and clean, consistent joints.
It depends on the shade and how the patio is used. Paving under or beside trees needs attention sooner than open paving, and regular sweeping in autumn makes a noticeable difference. We suggest an interval once we have seen the garden.
