Solar Panel Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Watlington lies at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, where gardens slope, plots can be narrow and woodland rises behind the rooftops. We plan how to reach each array first, then clean it with pure water and a soft brush.

Before we start
Washing a solar panel is gentle, careful work, but getting a pole to the glass from a safe spot on the ground is where the thinking goes. Slopes, walls, outbuildings and planting all change what is possible. At a free site visit we find the right position for every part of the array before anything is booked.

Under the hills
Watlington is a small historic market town tucked beneath the Chiltern escarpment, with a conservation-area core of cottages, Georgian town houses and former farmhouses, and more recent homes on its edges. Older buildings here mix red brick and flint with render and timber, under roofs of handmade clay tile, slate and, on a few, thatch.
For anyone fitting or cleaning solar panels, that setting has consequences. Gardens rise and fall with the land, older plots can be narrow with limited side access, and arrays are often placed on rear slopes, extensions or outbuildings to catch the sun. The wooded hills above add leaves, seeds and pollen, and shaded roofs can let moss creep along the lower frames.
Access
A water-fed pole lets us clean most domestic arrays without anyone going up onto the roof, but it only works from a firm, safe footing within reach of the panels. A garden that falls away from the house, a path squeezed between buildings or a border full of shrubs can each change the angle and the reach.
At the site visit we walk the property, look at the array from below and decide where the pole will be set for each section. If a part of the installation cannot be cleaned properly from the ground, we explain that before quoting, rather than finding out on the day.
Woodland debris
Homes close to the hillside woods collect more than dust. In spring, pollen settles in a fine yellow film. Through summer, sap and honeydew from overhanging branches leave sticky spots. In autumn, leaf fragments and seed cases lodge against the bottom frames, where they hold moisture and give moss a foothold.
Soft bristles and plenty of de-ionised water lift sticky residue without detergent. The lower frame and corners get particular attention, because that is where this material gathers and where a quick clean would leave it behind.
The roof around it
Handmade clay tiles and older slate can be brittle, and the fixings beneath them may be well past their best. That is one more reason we work from the ground and never treat the roof as somewhere to kneel or lean. We clean the glass and the panel frames, and nothing else on the roof is disturbed.
If we can see moss on the tiles above shedding onto the array, we will mention it, since clearing the panels alone will not stop that debris arriving.
Step by step
Every installation follows the same sequence. The difference from one house to the next is where the pole is set and how far it has to reach.
We look at the array, its pitch and height, the condition of the frames and seals, and the ground beneath, then confirm how every panel will be reached.
Purified water fed through a soft brush loosens pollen, sap, bird mess and grime, worked gently across the glass rather than attacked with pressure.
Leaf fragments, seed cases and moss caught along the bottom frame and in the corners are removed so they stop holding damp against the panel edge.
Everything loosened is rinsed away with de-ionised water, and the glass is left to dry by itself with nothing wiped across it.
Once dry, we check the panels from a safe vantage point and tell you about anything visible on the frames, seals or fixings that may need attention.
Know the limits
We remove what is sitting on the glass. We cannot say in advance what that will mean for generation, because orientation, season, shading and the system itself all play a part.
Why us
We work out the footing and reach for each part of the array at the site visit, which matters on a sloping or narrow plot.
No detergents and no chemicals are used, so the glass is left clear and nothing drains into the garden or onto older roof materials.
The pole is worked from the ground, so nobody stands on the array or the clay tiles and slate around it.
Our operatives are fully insured, and a clear quotation sets out the panels included and how they will be reached.
Nearby
We also clean panels in the small villages near Watlington, including Pyrton, Shirburn, Cuxham, Britwell Salome, Christmas Common and Aston Rowant. Many share the same hillside setting, so the access checks are just as important.

Questions
Often, yes. A water-fed pole can be set up on many slopes as long as there is a firm, safe place to stand within reach. We check this at the site visit and tell you plainly if any section is out of reach.
Outbuildings are often easier to reach than the main roof, though older ones can sit behind walls or hedges. We clean them in the same way, with pure water and a soft brush from the ground.
Yes, in most cases. De-ionised water and soft bristles, given time and more than one pass where needed, lift sap and honeydew from the glass without leaving any cleaning product behind.
No. High pressure does nothing useful on solar glass and adds risk around the frames and seals. The panels are brushed gently and rinsed with purified water.
Not in a way anyone can measure in advance. Clean glass receives more light than dirty glass, yet the difference depends on how soiled the array was, its orientation, the season and the system. We do not quote a figure.
Once a year is a sensible starting point, and arrays under or beside trees may benefit from twice. Leaf debris along the bottom frames or patches that remain after rain are good signs that a clean is due.
