Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Under the Chiltern scarp, Watlington mixes red clay tile, later slate and modern concrete within a few streets. We read the covering first, take the moss off by hand from access equipment and clean only as hard as it allows.

Where we begin
A handmade clay tile, a natural slate and a concrete interlocking tile can sit within sight of one another here, and they do not respond to water, pressure or brushing in the same way. We identify the covering, its age and any earlier repairs before suggesting how it should be cleaned, and we explain the reasoning so you can weigh it.

Local buildings
Watlington's conservation-area core of historic streets holds cottages, Georgian town houses and former farmhouses, with more modern homes towards the edge of town. Red brick, often with flint, is everywhere, alongside render, timber framing and local chalk. Roofs include handmade red clay tiles, later slate and, on a few historic properties, thatch.
Sitting beneath the wooded scarp of the Chiltern Hills, many plots are sheltered and shaded for part of the day, and mature trees around gardens add to that. Roofs that dry slowly after rain are where moss and lichen settle, and on older clay the growth often hides the true condition of the tiles until it is cleared.
Thatch
We clean and treat most common roof coverings, from clay and slate to flat and metal roofs, but we do not work on thatch. It is a specialist material that should be maintained by a thatcher, and pressure, treatment or brushing intended for tiles has no place on it.
If your home has a thatched section alongside tiled outbuildings, a slate extension or other surfaces, those can still be assessed on their own merits. We will tell you clearly at the site visit which parts we can help with and which belong to a specialist.
Handmade clay
Old clay tiles carry tonal variation from the clay, the firing and long exposure to the weather. That colour is not dirt and should not be scrubbed at. What we remove is the moss lodged along the laps and the growth on shaded slopes.
Older clay can also be softer and more fragile than it looks from the road, so the bulk of the moss comes off by hand and any further cleaning is kept as gentle as the tiles need.
Slate
Slate is hard-wearing but thin, and each piece depends on its fixings and overlap. Before cleaning, we look for slipped, cracked or loose slates, because those are repair items and should not be disturbed further.
Growth on slate tends to gather along the laps and in shaded corners. It is removed with close control from access equipment, without walking on the roof, and repairs are kept separate from cleaning so you know which is which.
Protection
Removing moss deals with what you can see, while spores and fine growth remain in the surface. That is why the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to every roof we clean, in settled weather free of frost.
It helps slow the return of moss, algae and lichen, typically giving protection for between 12 and 24 months depending on how sheltered the roof is, its covering and its upkeep. Roofs tucked under the hills and trees can expect the shorter end.
The process
Whatever the covering, the work follows five steps in the same order; the method inside each is chosen for the roof.
We assess the covering, its age and any defects, and where helpful fly a drone so you can watch the close-up footage with us on site.
We explain whether hand removal, low-pressure cleaning, soft washing or a combination suits your roof, then send a clear quotation with a defined statement of works.
Platforms, towers or poles are positioned so operatives can reach the slope precisely without standing on clay or slate, and the moss is lifted by hand.
The roof is cleaned by the agreed method, then treated with Chiltern EverGuard™ once the weather is settled and frost-free, which can mean a return visit in a cold spell.
Valleys, edges and gutters are cleared of displaced moss and downpipes checked. The project lead then explains the work and any repair issues spotted.
Before you decide
Cleaning improves a roof affected by growth, but it does not replace repairs. Clearing heavy moss can make an existing problem easier to see, which is useful information rather than a failing of the clean.
Why us
Clay, slate and concrete are distinguished before a method is proposed, so a fragile old roof is never treated like a modern one.
We say plainly when part of a property, such as thatch or a roof needing repair, should go to another specialist instead.
Access is planned before the job starts, keeping operatives close to the surface without placing weight on it.
Our operatives are fully insured, and every roof finishes with a handover that covers what was done and what was applied.
Surrounding villages
We also look after roofs in the villages close by, including Pyrton, Shirburn, Lewknor, Cuxham, Britwell Salome and Christmas Common. Many sit beneath the same wooded hills, and each roof is assessed individually.

Questions
No. Thatch is the one roof type we do not work on; it should be cared for by a specialist thatcher. Other surfaces at the same property, such as a tiled outbuilding, can still be assessed.
Yes, in most cases, after inspection. We check the tiles and any earlier repairs at the site visit, remove the moss by hand and keep any further cleaning gentle. If the roof needs repair first, we say so.
Yes. Slates are thin and rely on their fixings, so we check for loose or slipped pieces first and clean with close control from access equipment. Nobody walks on a slate roof during our work.
Because many problems cannot be seen from the ground. A drone gives a close view of ridges, valleys and rear slopes, and we share the live images so you see what we see before any recommendation is made.
No. Cleaning and roofing repairs are separate. We point out visible defects so you can arrange the right repair, and where a roof is too damaged to clean safely we recommend that the repair comes first.
There is no fixed timescale. Shade from trees and the hills, orientation, tile type and moisture all play a part. The treatment we apply helps slow regrowth, and we email as its protection period nears its end.
