Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Beside the Thames, roofs rarely weather evenly: a shaded rear slope or a valley can carry heavy moss while the front stays fairly clear. We assess each elevation, lift the moss by hand and clean to suit the covering.

The principle
A single home here may have a main roof, a porch, a garage and an extension, sometimes in three coverings, each facing a different way. Growth follows the shade and the damp, not the house as a whole. That is why we walk round the whole property, view every slope and price the roof you actually have, not just the front elevation.

Local conditions
Wallingford stands beside the Thames, with period buildings around its Market Place and old centre and established family homes and newer developments spreading out from it. Older houses tend to carry weathered clay tile or slate, while later homes mostly use concrete tiles in a range of profiles and finishes.
Damp is the common thread. River air, mature gardens and close neighbouring buildings shade parts of many roofs, and a slope that dries slowly after rain is where moss settles first. Once it has a hold, each cushion traps more moisture and wind-blown debris, so growth thickens unevenly: north-facing slopes, areas under branches and the bottom courses above the gutter are usually the worst.
Valleys and edges
Moss does not stay where it grew. In rain, loose pieces slide down the tiles and lodge in valleys, behind chimneys and dormers, and along the gutter line. A gutter that is already half full often shows that a roof has been shedding for some time.
A proper clean follows that material all the way down. We work valleys and lower edges deliberately, keep the loosened moss under control rather than washing it into outlets, then clear the gutters and check the downpipes before we leave.
Coverings
Heavy moss wedged between profiled concrete tiles is a different job from light staining on a slate roof. Concrete tiles roughen with age and hold growth around their laps. Older clay can be more brittle than it appears and should keep its natural weathering. Slate is thin and relies on its fixings, so it is cleaned with close control from access equipment and never walked on.
Lichen and algae
Algae shows as a green or dark film and usually responds well on the day. Lichen is different: it forms pale, grey or yellow spots that grip the surface tightly, and scrubbing hard at it risks harming the tile more than the lichen.
After cleaning, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on and continues working on that residual growth, so treated lichen often keeps lightening as the weather acts on it. We explain at the visit which improvement to expect straight away and which will follow.
Protection
The treatment is applied to every roof we clean, once the surface is clean and the weather is settled and free of frost. It helps reduce the return of moss, algae and lichen rather than stopping it outright, because spores keep arriving from trees and gardens.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, with sheltered riverside slopes towards the shorter end. When the period is nearly over we send an email offering a free assessment, so any retreatment is decided on the roof's actual condition.
How it runs
Every roof goes through the same five stages, though what happens inside each one depends on the covering and the access.
We look at each elevation, the valleys and the gutter line, using a drone where it helps and showing you the live pictures on site.
Our written recommendation explains the method, the access and the reasons for both, alongside a clear quotation, so you can decide with everything in front of you.
From platforms, towers or poles placed as close to the slope as practical, the operatives lift the thick growth by hand without putting weight on the roof.
A low-pressure clean or soft wash suited to the covering follows, then the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once conditions are settled and frost-free.
Gutters are emptied of the moss that came down, downpipes are checked, and the project lead talks you through the finished roof and its aftercare.
Plain facts
Cleaning restores appearance and clears growth, but it is not roof repair. Removing a thick layer of moss sometimes exposes a cracked tile, tired mortar or a slipped slate that was always there. If we see something like that, we point it out so you can call a roofer; we do not disguise it as part of the clean.
Why choose us
Quotations reflect access, tile type, density of growth and preparation, not a square-metre guess made from the front of the house.
Working positions are chosen so operatives reach the surface without walking on it, which keeps pressure and angle under control.
Valleys, lower edges and gutters are cleared of displaced moss, so the clean does not create a blockage further down.
Our operatives are fully insured, and you receive a handover from the project lead covering what was done and what was applied.
Nearby villages
We also clean roofs across the villages near the town, such as Crowmarsh Gifford, Cholsey, Benson, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Shillingford and Moulsford. Roofs there are assessed in exactly the same way, slope by slope.

Questions
Shade and drying time. A north-facing slope, or one under trees or beside a taller building, stays wet longer after rain, and moss establishes where a surface rarely dries. The opposite slope may get enough sun and wind to stay fairly clear.
Yes. Valleys carry the water from two slopes, and moss or leaves lodged there hold water and debris where it should be running freely. We clear valleys by hand during the clean rather than leaving the debris behind.
Not always. Lichen bonds closely to the surface, and forcing every spot off on the day can be harsher than the tile deserves. Treated lichen usually keeps lightening afterwards as weather works on it, and we explain what to expect beforehand.
Yes. Moss can be removed through the year. The treatment, though, needs settled conditions without frost, so in a cold spell we take the moss off and return to apply it once the weather allows.
We tell you about it at handover. Repairs are a job for a roofer, and we keep them separate from cleaning so you know exactly what you are looking at and can arrange the right work.
Yes. Whatever comes off the roof ends up in the gutters, so emptying them and checking the downpipes is standard. If they were already badly blocked before we started, we will mention that too.
Yes, usually at the same visit. Lower roofs are assessed along with the main roof, including any flat roofs in felt, EPDM rubber or GRP, which are cleaned with care around joints, edges and outlets.
