Gutter Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Beside the Thames, Wallingford's gutters rarely dry out between showers, so fallen leaves break down into a heavy silt that settles at the outlets. We clear it, flush the downpipes and find where an overflow is really coming from.

Reading the signs
Rainwater escapes at the lowest or weakest point of a run, which may be metres from the plug that is holding it back. Clearing only the stretch above a wet wall can leave the real obstruction in place. We follow the water from the roof edge to the foot of each downpipe, so the clean deals with the cause.

Wallingford homes
Wallingford sits beside the Thames, and the river's damp air, together with mature gardens and sheltered corners, keeps many roofs and gutters wet for long spells. Leaves that would blow away on an exposed site stay put here, soften and break down into a dark silt that clings to the base of the channel and collects at the outlets.
Around the Market Place and the older streets, period buildings stand next to later family homes, and the edges of town carry newer developments. That means cast iron on some houses, uPVC on most, and plenty of extensions, porches and conservatories with short, shallow runs that catch whatever comes off the roof above them.
Silt and sludge
Dry leaves sit loosely and can be lifted out in handfuls. Once they have spent weeks in standing water they collapse into a dense, sticky layer mixed with grit washed off the roof and fragments of moss. That layer is heavy, holds water against the gutter and its joints, and is the part a quick scoop tends to leave behind.
A pole-fed vacuum draws it out of the channel rather than smearing it along, and flushing afterwards shows whether any is still lodged in the outlet.
Outlets and hoppers
Everything in a gutter is carried towards the outlet, so that is where blockages form first. On older houses a hopper head at the top of the downpipe adds another collection point, and on some it is packed solid long before the channel looks full. A downpipe with a bend near the top or at the foot can hold debris too.
The roofline face
Damp conditions and repeated overflow leave a green or black film on the outer face of gutters and along the fascia and soffit beneath. Once the inside is clear, we wash that staining off as part of the gutter visit. uPVC usually comes up well, while aluminium, steel and painted finishes are washed down without anything abrasive.
Where staining has spread down render or brickwork below, that is a separate job, and we will tell you so rather than stretch the gutter visit to cover it.
Our method
We work along the route the water takes, so every run is finished properly before we move on to the next.
Before anything is moved, we look along each run, outlet, hopper and downpipe, noting where overflow marks sit and where the falls lead, so we know which point is likely to be holding water back.
A pole-fed gutter vacuum lifts leaves, silt and moss from ground level wherever the layout allows. Runs above glass or behind deep eaves are cleared from a properly footed ladder, agreed in advance.
Clean water goes along each channel and down every pipe while we watch the outflow at the bottom. Slow drainage after clearing points to a restriction lower down, which we record.
Brackets that have slipped and joints that have parted are re-seated where it is a minor job. Anything larger, such as a split length or a run that has lost its fall, goes into the report.
Staining is washed from the gutter faces, fascias and soffits, the debris is taken away, and you get a short summary of what we found along the roofline.
Before you book
A cleared gutter carries water away as designed, provided it is sound and correctly hung. It will not mend a split, reseal a leaking joint or reach a blockage in buried drainage.
In a damp, leafy setting the debris also comes back, so we treat clearing as regular upkeep rather than a single fix, and we suggest an interval based on how much we removed.
Why us
We follow the water from roof edge to drain, so the blockage is cleared where it sits rather than where the overflow happens to appear.
Every downpipe is flushed while we watch it drain, so you know the route works rather than taking it on trust.
Silt and leaves go into the vacuum, not across your paths and borders, and they leave the property with us at the end.
Fully insured, with the access for each run settled at the free site visit and a plain written summary when we finish.
Nearby
We also clear gutters across the river in Crowmarsh Gifford, and in Cholsey, Benson, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Shillingford and Moulsford. Wherever damp, sheltered gardens keep a roof wet, the same route-first approach applies to each house.

Questions
Because the leaves have been sitting wet. In a damp setting they break down quickly, mix with grit and moss from the roof and form a dense silt. It holds water, adds weight to the brackets and is the part most likely to block the outlet.
Not necessarily. Water escapes wherever the run is lowest or weakest, which can be some way from the obstruction. We clear and flush the whole run and check the downpipe, so the actual cause is dealt with.
Yes. Hopper heads collect leaves and silt before the water reaches the downpipe, and they often block first. We empty them where they can be reached safely and flush the pipe below to check it drains.
Yes. Once the channel is clear, the green and black streaking on the outer face of the gutter, fascia and soffit is washed off. Staining further down the walls is a separate job, and we will say if it needs one.
Then the restriction is probably lower down, at a bend, a gully or in the buried drain. That lies outside gutter cleaning, so we record what we saw and recommend a drainage investigation rather than guessing.
Once or twice a year suits most homes. Where trees overhang the roof or the gutters stay wet for long periods, the more frequent end is wiser. We suggest an interval once we have seen how much came out.
Yes. Their shallow falls fill quickly, and because they run along glass we never lean on the roof itself. Each run is cleared by hand or by vacuum, whichever the access permits, and then flushed.
