Driveway Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Wallingford sits on level ground beside the Thames, and on a flat drive water lingers, silt settles and joints wash out. We clean to suit the surface, manage where the water goes and refill block-paved joints with Chiltern Polymeric Sand.

Our view
A driveway clean releases a surprising amount of silt, moss and spent jointing sand. On level ground that material does not run away on its own; it gathers in low spots, gullies and the edges of borders. So before we start, we look at the falls, the channels and the drains, and plan the order of work so the dirt leaves with us rather than settling somewhere new.

Local setting
Wallingford grew up at a crossing of the Thames, and much of the town lies on fairly flat land close to the river. Period buildings gather around the Market Place and High Street, and many homes have mature gardens whose trees and hedges keep part of the drive in shade. Low-lying, sheltered surfaces dry slowly after rain, which is when algae and moss take hold.
Beyond the historic centre the housing broadens into established family homes and newer developments, and their drives are just as varied: block paving with sanded joints, resin-bound finishes, concrete, tarmac and some natural stone. Extensions and later landscaping mean one entrance can carry two or three materials, each of which needs its own method.
Falls and channels
Even a drive that looks level has a fall, and it is rarely even. Water sits for longest in the shallow dips, which is where green film and moss usually appear first, and fine silt collects along the lowest edge and around channel drains.
We work with that fall rather than against it. Loosened debris is gathered as the clean progresses instead of being pushed into gullies, onto lawns or against the house, and accessible channels are left clear of anything the work released. If standing water comes from levels that were laid wrongly or a drain that has failed, we will tell you: cleaning improves the surface but cannot correct the design beneath it.
Jointing
Washing block paving clears the old jointing sand along with the weeds and dirt, and empty joints let blocks move and give seeds a fresh place to settle. Our restoration therefore carries on after the clean.
Everyday use
How a drive is used shows in how it ages. The lanes cars run along darken with road film, the patch under a parked car stays sheltered and dry, and turning points pick up tyre marks. Oil and other vehicle fluids leave more concentrated stains.
Each of those is treated as its own problem. General cleaning lifts most of the film and grime, while oil gets specialist treatment that significantly reduces most staining. A fresh drip on dense paving is a different matter from an old stain soaked into porous concrete, and we will tell you which you have before work begins.
Newer finishes
Resin-bound driveways are cleaned at low pressure, using methods chosen for resin-bound systems, so dirt, algae and moss are lifted from the textured face without stressing the bonded aggregate. If the resin is already cracked or loose, cleaning cannot repair it, and we point that out at the visit.
Porcelain gathers algae and atmospheric grime that leave it dull and slippery underfoot. It cleans up readily; the skill is in an even finish across the slabs and clean, consistent joints.
How it runs
Every drive follows the same sequence. The pressure, the treatments and the order of work are set by the surface and the way water leaves it.
We identify the material, check the joints, staining and access, and look at the falls, gullies and channels so we know where the cleaning water and debris will go.
You receive our recommended method and a clear quotation that sets out each surface, the stages involved and what cleaning is and is not expected to change.
The drive is cleaned at the pressure the material needs, with heated water where it is tolerated, working in a direction that keeps silt out of drains and planted borders.
Block paving is left to dry, compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand. Other surfaces have the finishing steps they need.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to the finished drive, channels and edges are checked, and we explain how the surface is likely to weather from here.
Be realistic
The aim is a clearly cleaner, more even entrance, not a surface stripped of all its age. Older blocks keep some colour variation, stone keeps its weathering, and concrete may still show historic marks once the general grime has gone.
Cleaning will not level sunken paving, rebuild a failed edge or cure a drainage fault, and shaded, low-lying corners will see growth return sooner than open ground. We restore the original appearance where the condition allows and say plainly where it does not.
Why us
Falls, channels and gullies are part of the assessment, so the clean does not leave a blocked drain or silted border behind it.
Pressure and chemical are kept to the least that achieves the result, even when that means a second application instead of more force.
Compaction and Chiltern Polymeric Sand in every joint come as standard, so the drive is finished through the joints and not just on the surface.
Fully insured operatives who protect beds, lawns and adjoining walls, and who leave the working area tidy at the end of the job.
Nearby
Our driveway work extends to the villages around Wallingford, including Crowmarsh Gifford across the bridge, Cholsey, Benson, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Shillingford and Moulsford. Many sit on the same low ground near the river, so drainage and joints get the same attention.

Questions
We look at the falls and drains first and plan the order of work around them. Loosened silt, moss and old jointing sand are gathered as we go rather than washed into gullies, lawns or beds, and accessible channels are left clear.
Not if the cause is the levels. Clearing silt and growth can help water move off the surface, but a drive laid without enough fall, or a blocked or failed soakaway, needs a separate repair. We tell you which it looks like at the visit.
Yes, as standard. Once the paving has dried, we compact it with a vibrating plate compactor and refill every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which helps stabilise the blocks and resist weed growth and joint washout.
Usually they improve a great deal. Road film and tyre marks respond well to general cleaning, and stubborn areas can be treated separately. How far they lift depends on the surface and how long the marks have been building up.
Porcelain cleans up readily, so the work is in the finish: an even result across every slab and clean, consistent joints. Algae and grime are removed at a controlled pressure, and the surface is finished with Chiltern EverGuard™ like every other drive we restore.
Yes. It is applied after every driveway restoration to help reduce regrowth. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how the drive is maintained.
There is no fixed schedule. Shade, damp, nearby planting, vehicle use and the material all affect how quickly a drive dulls again. A sheltered, low-lying entrance needs attention sooner than an open one, and we will give you our view at the visit.
