Driveway Cleaningin Goring
Between the river and the wooded slopes of the Goring Gap, driveways can stay damp long after the rain stops, and that is when algae turns them green and slippery. We clean to suit the surface and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

The real problem
Damp is what turns a drive green so we deal with more than the dirt
Algae and moss need moisture more than anything else, and a drive that dries slowly gives them a head start. Cleaning removes what has grown, but the shade and damp that encouraged it stay put. That is why we look at where your drive stays wet, explain how quickly growth is likely to return and finish every restoration with a treatment that helps slow it.

Goring setting
A river village in the Goring Gap
Goring sits on the east bank of the Thames where the river cuts through the chalk hills, at the western edge of the Chilterns National Landscape. Wooded slopes, mature gardens and the river itself mean that many drives here spend part of the day in shade and dry slowly after wet weather, especially beneath trees or beside high hedges.
Much of the older village lies within a conservation area, where flint with brick dressings, red brick and plain clay tiles give it its character. Driveways range from cottage frontages and gravel entrances to larger riverside homes with natural stone, porcelain or resin, and newer properties with block paving or tarmac. Each surface reacts differently to damp and to cleaning.
Slippery surfaces
Green film on paving, and why it returns
Algae starts as a thin green or dark film, often first on the shaded side of a drive, along hedges and on paths that rarely see the sun. On smooth surfaces such as porcelain and some natural stone, it makes the paving noticeably slippery underfoot in wet weather. Moss follows in the joints and along edges, where it holds water and keeps the surface damper still.
A careful clean removes both, at the lowest pressure that will lift them. What it cannot change is the setting. A drive under trees beside the river will always be wetter than an open one on higher ground, so it will green over sooner. Knowing that from the outset helps you plan sensible upkeep rather than be surprised by it.
After the clean
What the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment adds
Once the drive is clean and any joints have been refilled, we apply Chiltern EverGuard™, our own treatment, as the final stage of every driveway restoration. It helps reduce how quickly moss, algae and similar growth come back.
It is not a substitute for proper cleaning, and it does not stop growth for good. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and where a particular drive sits in that range depends on its location, the surrounding environment, the surface type and how it is maintained. In a damp, tree-lined spot by the river, expect the shorter end; on an open, sunny entrance, the longer.
Surfaces
Stone, porcelain, resin and block paving
Larger riverside homes often use finer materials, and each one is handled on its own terms rather than with one pressure setting.
- Natural stone: sandstone, limestone, granite and slate assessed before the method is set
- Porcelain: cleaned for an even finish across the slabs and consistent joints
- Resin-bound: low pressure, with methods chosen for resin systems
- Block paving: cleaned, compacted and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand
- Gravel: treated for weeds, moss and organic debris and left tidy
Our method
From damp, green paving to a restored drive
Every restoration follows the same order of work, with the pressure and treatments inside each stage set for the material.
- 01
Site visit and assessment
We identify the surface and its condition, note where it stays damp and shaded, check the joints and drainage, and set the cleaning method, the pressure and the treatment to suit.
- 02
Clean and lift the growth
Controlled cleaning removes algae, moss, grime and staining evenly across the drive. Heated water is used where the material tolerates it, and stubborn growth gets a targeted treatment rather than more pressure.
- 03
Joints prepared
Weeds and organic matter are cleared from the joints. On block paving the dried surface is then compacted with a vibrating plate compactor so the blocks sit firm.
- 04
Re-sanded
Every joint in a block-paved drive is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which helps stabilise the paving and resist weed growth, washout and freeze-thaw damage.
- 05
Chiltern EverGuard™ applied
The finished drive receives Chiltern EverGuard™ to help slow the return of growth, and we explain what to expect over the coming months given its shade and setting.
Plain facts
Honest limits on a driveway clean
We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows, and to be clear about where it may not.
- Growth will return in time, sooner on shaded, riverside drives
- Very old oil soaked into porous paving may be reduced, not removed
- Cracked, sunken or failing surfaces need a repair rather than a clean
- Natural weathering in stone is part of its character and may remain

Questions
Driveway Cleaning in Goring: your questions
Why does my drive go green so quickly?
Because it stays damp. Shade from trees and hedges, river mist and slow drying after rain give algae and moss the moisture they need. North-facing and tree-covered sections usually show it first, and the joints and edges hold on to it longest.
Will cleaning make a slippery drive better underfoot?
Yes. The slipperiness usually comes from algae, and removing it is the main aim of the clean. We work at the lowest pressure that lifts the growth, treat any that is stubborn and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™ to help slow its return.
How long does Chiltern EverGuard™ protection last?
Typically between 12 and 24 months. In a damp, shaded riverside setting, expect the shorter end of that range; an open, sunny drive usually lasts longer. Surface type and maintenance also make a difference.
Do you re-sand block paving after cleaning?
Yes. Cleaning removes old and weakened jointing material with the dirt, so we let the drive dry, compact it with a vibrating plate compactor and refill every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand.
Can you clean a porcelain driveway?
Yes. Algae and atmospheric grime leave porcelain dull and slippery. It cleans up readily, and the care goes into an even finish across every slab and clean, consistent joints, followed by Chiltern EverGuard™.
Can you remove oil stains from a driveway?
Usually we can reduce them significantly with specialist treatment. Very old or deeply absorbed oil may not lift completely, and we will explain what is realistic at the site visit.
Will you protect the planting beside my drive?
Yes. Lawns, borders, walls, doors and nearby finishes are considered before we begin and protected or rinsed as required, and treatments are kept to the surfaces included in the agreed work.
