Driveway Cleaning · Berkshire
Across Reading, many drives are compact frontages that open straight onto the pavement, with a neighbour's paving a step away. We clean concrete, tarmac and block paving to suit each, keep spray and run-off contained and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
A frontage with space for one or two cars is a smaller job, but it gets the same assessment, the same method for its surface and the same finish as a long country drive. What changes is the setting: the pavement in front, a neighbour's drive alongside and the house wall a short distance away all have to be kept clean while we work.

Reading frontages
Reading expanded rapidly in the Victorian period, and many of its streets still have red and patterned brick terraces with short front gardens. Beyond them lie Edwardian homes, inter-war suburbs in areas such as Caversham, Tilehurst and Earley, and modern developments with block-paved and concrete drives laid when the houses were built.
Over the decades, many short front gardens have been given over to parking, so a typical frontage is a compact rectangle of concrete, tarmac or block paving with a dropped kerb at the front and a boundary wall or a neighbour's drive at the side. Trees along the older suburban roads and the Thames corridor keep some of these drives shaded and slow to dry.
Tight spaces
On a compact drive the pavement, the neighbour's paving and the front wall of the house are never far from the spray. We set the cleaning direction so loosened dirt is drawn away from those surfaces, keep pressure down near the boundary and tidy the pavement edge before we leave.
Hoses and equipment are laid so that pedestrians can pass, and the work stays on the private surface included in the agreed scope.
Concrete
Many converted front gardens were laid in plain concrete. Over time it gathers a broad grey film that hides individual marks, and once that film is cleaned off, old oil spots, rust and repairs can stand out more clearly.
That is the surface being revealed, not damaged. We clean and treat concrete for deeper staining where it needs it, and at the site visit we say which marks we expect to lift and which are likely to stay.
Tarmac
Tarmac frontages are usually green rather than dirty. Moss, algae and organic growth are the usual reasons we are asked to look at one, and controlled cleaning removes them with the pressure held to what the surface needs.
An ageing drive may already show loose aggregate, patches or worn binder, and high pressure aimed too close can make that worse. Faded colour is part of the tarmac's age, so we do not try to wash it back to black. Areas that are breaking up need resurfacing, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Block paving
Newer estates around the town are dominated by block paving, and its joints are where weeds and moss start. Our clean removes them with the old sand, and once the paving is dry it is compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, used in place of conventional kiln-dried sand to help stabilise the blocks and resist washout and weed growth.
Every restored drive is then finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment.
How we work
The same five steps apply to every driveway, whatever its size. On a frontage by the pavement, each is planned around the space we have.
We identify the surface, its joints and stains, and note the pavement, boundary walls, neighbouring paving and where the run-off will go.
A clear quotation sets out exactly which area is included, how it will be cleaned and which marks are likely to remain afterwards.
Growth and grime are removed at the lowest effective pressure, working so spray and loosened dirt move away from the pavement and the neighbours.
Block paving is left to dry, compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand along every joint.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the drive, the pavement edge is tidied and we walk you through the finished result.
Know the limits
Cleaning removes growth, grime and much of the staining from a frontage, and the treatment helps slow regrowth. It does not resurface worn tarmac, level sunken blocks or repair a cracked concrete slab, and deeply soaked-in oil may be reduced rather than lifted.
Why us
A one-car frontage gets the same assessment, method and protective finish as a larger drive, with nothing left out because the job is small.
Spray and run-off are kept away from the pavement and neighbouring property, and equipment is laid so people can still pass.
We tell you at the site visit which oil, rust and repair marks are likely to remain, before any work is agreed.
Fully insured operatives, a clear quotation in advance and a finished drive explained to you before we leave.

Our driveway work also covers the suburbs and villages around Reading, including Caversham, Tilehurst, Earley, Woodley, Calcot and Shinfield. Their frontages range from inter-war concrete to newer block paving, and each is assessed in the same way.

Questions
No. A compact frontage benefits from the same assessment and method as a larger drive, and on block paving the joints still need rebuilding afterwards. The size changes the scope of the quotation, not the standard of the work.
Not if the work is set up properly. We plan the cleaning direction away from boundaries, keep the pressure low near them and manage run-off, so the pavement and neighbouring surfaces are not left dirty.
Not always completely. Specialist treatment can significantly reduce most oil staining, but marks that have soaked deep into porous concrete may stay visible. We tell you at the site visit which ones are likely to lift.
Yes, if its condition allows. We hold the pressure to what an aged surface can take. Where tarmac is already breaking up or badly cracked, it needs resurfacing rather than cleaning, and we will say so.
There is no fixed schedule. A shaded drive under street trees collects moss and algae much faster than an open one in full sun, and traffic, the surface and drainage all play a part. Many owners book once the drive turns noticeably dark or green.
Yes. Every drive we restore is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which helps reduce the return of moss, algae and lichen. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, surface and maintenance.
