Gutter Cleaning · Berkshire
On a Reading terrace, one gutter often runs across several front doors and a narrow back addition sits beside the next. We clear your runs front and back, flush the downpipes and explain how next door's gutter affects yours.

Worth knowing
Along a row of terraced houses, the front gutter is often one continuous run divided only by ownership, and a downpipe may serve two homes. Water does not stop at the boundary. A gutter packed with leaves next door can hold water back onto your stretch, and debris from your section can drift towards a shared outlet. It helps to understand how your run connects before deciding what needs clearing.

Reading streets
Reading expanded fast in the Victorian period, and many streets from that era are lined with terraces in red and patterned brick, some of it now within the town's conservation areas. Edwardian houses, inter-war suburbs, Caversham across the Thames and newer developments add to the mix, but the terraced street remains one of the town's most familiar sights.
Many of these terraces have a narrow back addition behind each house, set close to its neighbour with a slim passage between. Those passages see little sun. Gutters there stay damp, collect leaves blown in from gardens behind and grow moss, and they are rarely looked at because nobody sees them from the street.
Shared runs
If the gutter overflows at your end but your section looks clear, the restriction may be just across the boundary, or in a shared downpipe below it. Equally, clearing only your length of a long run can leave water backing up from further along.
We clear the runs on your property and check where they discharge. Where a run or downpipe is shared, it is worth asking your neighbours whether they would like theirs cleared at the same time, so the whole length drains as it should.
Back additions
A Victorian back addition usually has its own lower roof and gutter, running alongside a slim side passage. With so little sun, the gutter stays wet, moss grows on the roof above and sheds into it, and leaves from gardens behind settle there and rot.
These runs are often the worst on the house. Access is usually through the back garden, and on a mid-terrace that can mean bringing equipment through the house or along a rear path. We agree how at the site visit so the day goes smoothly.
On the brickwork
Older brick terraces were generally built with solid walls rather than cavities, so water running down the face soaks into the masonry with no gap to stop it. Overflowing gutters leave dark tide marks and green streaks on the brick, and in time can show as damp on the inside face.
Clearing the gutter stops the overflow that is feeding it. The wall then needs time to dry, and staining already on the brick will not disappear when the gutter is cleaned. If the pattern does not fit a gutter problem, we will tell you.
Bay fronts
Many Victorian and Edwardian fronts have a bay window with its own small roof, and often a canopy or porch over the door. Each has a short gutter with one outlet, and each sits right where you walk in and out. A blocked bay gutter will drip onto the path or splash the window below.
We include these small front runs in the clean and flush their outlets, so the water from them leaves by the pipe and not over the edge.
Start to finish
Most front gutters on terraces can be cleared from the pavement or front garden with the vacuum pole. The back is planned at the site visit.
We work out which runs and downpipes belong to your house, which are shared, and where each discharges, noting splits, loose fixings and weeping joints as we go.
The pole-fed vacuum draws leaves, moss and silt from the front gutter, bay roofs and back addition, from the ground wherever possible and from a footed ladder where not.
Water is run through each outlet and down every pipe on your property. A shared pipe that backs up, or a gully that will not drain, is noted for you.
Brackets and joints that have shifted are put back where that will hold. A cracked length or a run that has dropped is written up for a gutter specialist.
Paths and passages are left tidy and you receive a short summary of the gutters and roof edge, including the back addition you rarely see.
Be clear on this
We clear the gutters on your property. We cannot clear a neighbour's section without their agreement, so on a shared run your stretch may still be affected by a blockage further along. Cleaning also will not mend a cracked gutter, reseal a joint, correct a poor fall or clear a buried drain.
Why us
The back addition and side passage are included, not just the gutter you can see from the pavement.
We explain which runs and pipes are yours and which are shared, so you know where any remaining problem lies.
Leaves, moss and silt go into the vacuum rather than onto paths, passages or the garden, and the waste is taken away when we finish.
All gutter work is carried out by fully insured operatives, with the owner of the business accountable for each job.
Nearby
We clear gutters in the suburbs and villages around the town as well, including Caversham, Tilehurst, Calcot, Earley, Woodley and Sonning. Housing changes from street to street, so every visit starts with a look at the roofline.

Questions
It can. On a terrace the gutter is often one continuous run, and a blockage on the next section can hold water back onto yours or overload a shared downpipe. We explain how your run connects and where any problem sits.
Yes. Back-addition gutters are often the most neglected on a terrace, because they are shaded and out of sight. We agree access at the site visit, usually through the garden or along a rear path.
Only if there is no other way to the back. On many mid-terrace houses there is not, so we agree the route with you at the site visit, and the debris leaves in the vacuum rather than being carried through by hand.
Not on its own. It stops overflow that may be soaking the brick, but a solid wall that has been wet for months needs time to dry. Damp can also have other causes, and we will say if the pattern does not fit a gutter problem.
Not as part of a gutter clean. We wash the outer faces of the gutters, fascias and soffits, but cleaning the brick itself is a separate job and needs its own assessment for older or patterned brickwork.
Once a year suits many terraces, and twice for those near large trees or with a mossy back addition. We suggest a sensible interval after seeing how much came out of each run.
