Solar Panel Cleaning · Berkshire
Solar panels now sit on Reading's Victorian terraces, inter-war suburbs and new estates alike, and town grime settles on all of them. We clean the glass with de-ionised water and a soft brush, so it dries clear without detergent.

The water
Ordinary tap water leaves its minerals behind when it dries, which is why a rinsed window shows spots. On solar panels that would add a fresh layer of marks to the glass we had just cleaned. De-ionised water has those minerals removed, so it lifts dirt, rinses away and dries clear, with no detergent needed to help it.

Reading's housing
Reading expanded fast in the Victorian period, and many of its streets are lined with red and patterned brick houses. Edwardian homes, inter-war suburbs, older properties in Caversham and modern developments followed, and the borough protects a number of conservation areas with distinctive brick detailing.
Solar arrays turn up across all of it, often on rear slopes above long, narrow gardens. Town air brings a fine, slightly greasy grime that settles evenly over the glass, and homes near the Thames and the Kennet or close to mature trees add pollen, droppings and leaf debris on top.
De-ionised water
Tap water across much of this region is hard, carrying dissolved calcium and other minerals. When a droplet dries on glass, the water goes and the minerals stay, leaving the white ring familiar from shower screens and kettles.
De-ionised water has been passed through ion-exchange resin that removes those dissolved minerals. It is close to pure, so it picks up dirt readily and leaves nothing behind when it evaporates. That lets us rinse panels thoroughly and walk away, without squeegees or cloths ever touching the glass.
No detergent
Soap helps when cleaning with tap water because it reduces spotting and cuts grease. On a roof, though, any residue that is not rinsed off completely leaves a thin film that attracts the next lot of dust, and whatever is used runs off into gutters, gardens and drains.
With de-ionised water there is no spotting to fight, and a soft brush moves grime and pollen without help. Bird droppings take more soaking and more passes, but they still come off with water alone. Nothing goes onto the glass except water, and nothing comes off the roof except water and dirt.
No pressure
A pressure washer suits paving because paving can take the force. Solar panels have seals around the glass, junction boxes on the back and cables running beneath them, and a high-pressure jet can drive water where it should not go. It can also lift or crack the tiles around an array.
A water-fed pole delivers a gentle flow through the brush head, enough to float dirt away without forcing it anywhere. That is the only kind of water we put on a solar array, whatever is on the glass.
Our method
The method never changes from one home to the next. The only variable is how long each step takes, which depends on what is sitting on the glass.
We look at the panels, frames and seals, the pitch and the roof around the array, and confirm the pole can reach every panel from the ground.
De-ionised water runs through the soft brush head at low flow, wetting the glass and loosening town grime, pollen and dust.
The brush covers each panel in turn, with extra passes on droppings and sticky spots, then along the bottom frame and into the corners.
A final rinse of de-ionised water carries off everything loosened. The glass then dries by itself, with no cloth or squeegee needed.
We show you the finished array and mention any cracked glass, failed seals, loose fixings or damaged tiles we happened to notice nearby.
Plain limits
A clean takes off what sits on the glass. It does not test the panels, the wiring or the inverter, and it cannot explain a drop in output if the cause is electrical.
Why us
Because the water carries no minerals, panels dry clear on their own, without cloths, squeegees or any product.
Nothing but de-ionised water goes onto your roof, so nothing else reaches the garden, the gutter or the drain.
Low-flow water through a soft brush, never a pressure jet, so seals, junction boxes and nearby tiles are left undisturbed.
Fully insured operatives who clean from the ground where access allows and never stand on the array itself.
Nearby
We also clean panels in Caversham, Tilehurst and Calcot, in Earley and Woodley, and out to Shinfield. Housing and access change from one district to the next, so every visit starts with a look at the array.

Questions
Only with care, and never from a ladder or the roof. Tap water from a hose will leave mineral spots as it dries, and it will not shift droppings or sticky pollen. Never use a pressure washer, a stiff brush or household cleaner on the glass.
De-ionised water has had its dissolved minerals removed with ion-exchange resin. Tap water keeps them, and when it evaporates they stay on the glass as spots. De-ionised water dries without leaving anything behind.
No. High pressure can force water past seals and into places it should not reach, and can disturb tiles around the array. We use a low-flow, water-fed brush only.
Often, if they are recent. Spots from earlier tap-water rinses usually soften with de-ionised water and patient brushing. Older, baked-on mineral marks can resist, and we will not use anything abrasive to force them, so some may remain.
Not by an amount anyone can honestly promise. Dirt on the glass blocks some light, and cleaning removes it, but output also depends on the season, the weather, shading and the system itself. We do not quote a figure.
Yes, where they can be reached safely. Rear slopes on terraces are often within reach of a pole from the garden, though narrow access needs planning. We check the route and standing position at the free site visit.
