Solar Panel Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Henley-on-Thames has a great many period buildings, so a solar array here often shares its roof with old clay tiles or slate. We clean the glass with de-ionised water and a soft brush, and nobody stands on the array.

Our approach
A solar array may sit a hand's width above the tiles, yet the glass and the roof around it need quite different care. Panels have smooth glass faces, metal frames, seals and cabling, while the tiles carry their own weathering. At a free site visit we look at both, then explain how the panels can be reached and cleaned without disturbing what surrounds them.

Henley homes
Henley-on-Thames grew up beside the River Thames, and its historic centre is dense with period buildings; the Town Council notes that around 300 are designated for their special architectural or historic interest. Beyond the centre, established residential roads run out towards the wooded Chiltern hills, and larger homes sit in mature gardens.
For solar panels, that setting brings two things. Trees and river damp mean pollen, leaf fragments and the odd clump of moss arriving on the glass, while the roofs themselves are often older clay tile or slate that should not be walked on or leant against. We have worked in the town before, and we plan every solar clean with the roof beneath the array in mind.
Two surfaces
Roof tiles and slates weather, hold moisture and grow moss, and they are cleaned by a different service with different equipment. A photovoltaic panel is a glass face in a frame, wired into an electrical system, and it needs something much gentler: pure water, a soft brush and no force at all.
We clean the array as its own surface. Abrasive pads, household detergents and high pressure have no part in it, and we do not lift, unclip or reach beneath the panels. Where moss on the surrounding roof is shedding onto the frames, we will point it out, because that is a roof question rather than a panel one.
Access
Panels are fitted where the roof catches the light, not where it is easiest to reach. On older houses that can mean a rear slope above a narrow side passage, a lower roof over an extension, or an outbuilding at the end of the garden.
The water-fed pole lets us work from the ground on most domestic arrays, so the roof is never used as a platform and nobody steps onto the glass. We check the height, the pitch, the ground below and any obstacles at the site visit. If part of an array cannot be cleaned properly from a safe position, we tell you then rather than improvise on the day.
Bird fouling
Birds like a high perch, and on many roofs that means a ridge, a chimney stack or an aerial with the array directly beneath. The result is rarely an even layer of dirt. More often it is a cluster of hard, opaque marks on a few panels while the rest stay fairly clear.
Dried droppings do not wash off in the rain. We soak them with de-ionised water and work them loose with the soft brush, going back for a second pass where needed rather than scraping. Cleaning removes what is there; it will not stop birds using the same perch, so the marks can return.
How it runs
The order of work is the same on every installation. What changes is how we reach each panel, which is settled before any water goes on the glass.
We look at the number and position of panels, the roof covering around them, the height and pitch, and where a pole can be set up safely from the ground.
You receive a written scope saying which panels are included, how they will be reached and what the clean will and will not cover, before you agree to anything.
De-ionised water runs through a soft-bristle brush on the pole, loosening pollen, grime and bird mess from the glass without detergent or any added chemical.
Moss and debris lodged where the lower frame meets the glass are cleared, so a line of dirt is not left beneath an otherwise clean face.
The array is rinsed with pure water and left to dry on its own. We then mention anything we noticed about the seals, frames or fixings.
Worth knowing
Cleaning takes dirt, film and droppings off the glass so nothing sits between the light and the cells. What that is worth in electricity depends on how dirty the array was, which way it faces, the season and the system itself, so we do not put a figure on it.
Why us
De-ionised water and a soft brush do the work, so no detergent residue is left on the glass or rinsed into the gutters and borders below.
The pole reaches most domestic installations from the ground, which keeps feet off both the panels and the older tiles around them.
How every panel will be reached is agreed at the site visit, so there is no guesswork about ladders or roofs once we arrive.

Questions
Yes, in most cases. We clean only the glass and frames, with water and a soft brush, so nothing is applied to the historic fabric. The care goes into access: we do not walk on old tiles or slate, and if an array cannot be reached without doing so, we say so at the site visit.
Not entirely. Rain shifts loose dust but leaves dried bird mess, pollen film and tree residue behind, and it tends to carry fine dirt down to the bottom frame, where it collects. Those are the deposits a clean is for.
Not by any figure we can promise. Clean glass lets the panels receive the light that dirt was blocking, but the effect depends on how soiled they were, their orientation, the season and the condition of the system.
De-ionised water, which has had its dissolved minerals removed, applied through a soft-bristle brush on a water-fed pole. No detergents or chemicals are used, and the glass is left to dry naturally rather than towelled.
Once a year suits many homes. Arrays close to trees or farmland, or set at a shallow angle that holds dirt, may need cleaning twice a year. We would rather judge it from the state of your panels than from a calendar.
No. Our work stops at cleaning. If we notice a cracked panel, a lifted seal or a loose fixing during the final check we will tell you, but repairs and electrical testing belong with a qualified solar installer.
Yes, usually. Lower roofs are often easier to reach, though trees, fences and glass roofs nearby can complicate things. We look at the route and the ground at the site visit before confirming the method.
