Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Henley-on-Thames mixes period roofs near the river with larger homes towards the Chiltern woods, and each ages differently. We judge the covering and the finish you want first, lift the moss by hand, then clean as gently as the tile asks.

How we start
An old clay roof that has mellowed over decades is part of what makes a period house look settled. Moss cushions, green film and crusted lichen are something else. Our job is to separate the two: take off the growth that holds water and sheds into gutters, and leave the honest weathering that belongs to the roof.

Henley roofs
Henley-on-Thames grew up beside the Thames, and its historic centre is dense with listed and period buildings, many with older structures behind later Georgian fronts. Roofs here include old clay tiles, natural slate and long-repaired slopes where replacement tiles sit beside the originals. Beyond the centre, leafy roads and larger plots run out towards the wooded Chiltern hills.
That setting keeps a lot of roofs damp. River mist, mature gardens and the woods on the surrounding slopes shade rear pitches and slow drying after rain, so it is common to find one elevation heavily mossed while the front looks almost clear. Larger houses add dormers, valleys, garages and extensions, sometimes in two or three different coverings on one property.
Older roofs
Age changes a roof in ways that are not obvious from the pavement. Tiles soften and weather, nibs and fixings tire, earlier repairs bring in tiles from a different batch, and a later extension may carry a covering of its own. A slope that looks uniform can contain several areas that each need a different level of care.
So the moss comes off by hand first, from access equipment rather than from feet on the tiles, and only then do we decide how much cleaning the surface should take. Sometimes the right answer is a gentle soft wash; sometimes it is to do less and leave a stubborn mark to weather away after treatment.
Your finish
Owners of older clay roofs tend to want one of two things. Some would like the strongest visual change the tiles can sensibly take, perhaps before a sale when the roof dominates the photographs. Others want heavy moss dealt with while the roof keeps its mellow, established colour. Both are reasonable, and the plan should reflect whichever you prefer.
We ask at the site visit, show you drone images of each slope and say plainly whether the condition of the tiles makes your preferred finish realistic. On a fragile roof, an over-cleaned appearance often looks less natural than a careful restoration.
Access
Two houses that look alike from the road can need quite different plans. One has open access from a drive; the next has a conservatory beneath the main slope, a narrow side passage or ground that falls away at the back. Access is part of the method, because the closer and steadier the working position, the more precisely pressure and angle can be controlled.
After the clean
When the roof is clean we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as standard. It reaches into the surface to target residual spores and fine growth that cleaning cannot always shift, and it helps reduce how quickly moss and algae come back.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on shade, exposure, the covering and upkeep, and a roof under tall garden trees should expect the shorter end of that range. It needs settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we lift the moss and return to treat.
Order of work
The order of work is the same on every roof we clean; the method within each stage is set by what the visit showed.
We view the roof from the ground and, where it helps, from a drone, sharing the live footage with you so the rear pitches and valleys are seen as clearly as the front.
You receive our report and a clear quotation with a defined statement of works, setting out the method, the access and the finish we believe the roof can reach.
Operatives work from access equipment placed close to the slope and lift the bulk of the moss by hand, without standing on clay tiles or slate.
The surface is cleaned at the lowest pressure that achieves the agreed result, or soft washed, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment follows in settled, frost-free conditions.
Fallen moss is cleared from the gutters, downpipes are checked and surfaces below are left tidy. The project lead then walks you through what was done and what to expect.
Worth knowing
Cleaning improves appearance and removes growth that holds water, but it does not mend anything. Clearing thick moss can also reveal defects it was hiding, which is useful to know rather than a fault of the clean.
Why us
Henley-on-Thames is one of the places where we have carried out roof work, and it sits a short drive from our base in Marlow.
We ask what result you want and tell you honestly whether the tiles can reach it before any work is booked.
Operatives work from platforms, towers and poles, so weathered clay and slate are never used as a walkway.
The work is carried out by fully insured operatives, and the project lead explains everything that was applied at handover.
Around the town
We also clean roofs in the villages around the town, including Shiplake, Harpsden, Rotherfield Peppard, Sonning Common, Bix and Hambleden. Many share the same wooded, slower-drying setting, and each roof is assessed in the same way.

Questions
Yes, in most cases, once we have looked at it. We check the tiles, earlier repairs and fixings at the site visit. If a roof is too fragile or needs repair first, we say so and suggest a roofer before any cleaning goes ahead.
Not always, and that is not always the aim. Older clay carries natural weathering and colour variation that cleaning should not try to erase. We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows, and we tell you at the visit where it may not.
Yes, around them, subject to the layout. Panels change how the tiles beneath and beside them can be reached, so we assess the arrangement first. The panels themselves are cleaned separately with de-ionised water rather than treated as part of the roof.
Yes. Moss loosened from the roof collects in the gutters, so we clear the run and check the downpipes as part of every roof clean. Leaving it there would only move the problem lower down the house.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. A shaded rear pitch beneath large trees tends towards the shorter end, an open south-facing slope towards the longer. As the period draws to a close we email to offer a free reassessment of the roof.
It depends on the size and shape of the roof, the covering, how established the growth is and the access needed. Rather than estimate from a photograph, we visit, look at the whole roof and then send a clear quotation for the agreed work.
Often, yes. A heavily mossed roof can dominate listing photographs. Tell us the sale is the reason, and we will discuss the finish you are after and whether the tiles make it realistic, so the result looks cared for rather than overdone.
