Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Marlow sits low beside the Thames with wooded Chiltern slopes behind it, so its roofs dry slowly and moss settles in readily. We lift the moss by hand, clean at a pressure the tile can stand and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
No two roofs in town have aged in quite the same way. Pitch, covering, the trees beside it and the direction it faces all change what has grown and how firmly it holds. We look at all of that at a free site visit, often with a drone so you can see the tiles up close, and then explain which method we recommend and why.

Marlow roofs
Marlow lies on the north bank of the Thames, at the foot of wooded Chiltern slopes. Mist off the river and the shade of mature trees keep many roofs damp well into the day, and damp is what moss, algae and lichen need before anything else. North-facing pitches and roofs below tall trees are usually the first to turn green.
The roofs vary as much as the houses beneath them. Period properties in and around the town centre conservation area carry natural slate and older clay tiles, inter-war and post-war homes often have concrete tiles, and newer developments use concrete or fibre-cement slate. Each of those weathers differently, holds moisture differently and needs its own approach.
The growth
Moss is the obvious one. It forms cushions along the laps and edges of tiles, holds water against the surface like a sponge and sheds into the gutters whenever it dries and loosens. Algae shows as a green or dark film, most often on shaded slopes. Lichen is slower and flatter, but it grips mineral surfaces tightly and roots into them, so rain alone will not shift it.
Left alone, all three become more established each year and harder to remove. On a roof that rarely dries out between showers, you will usually find them growing side by side.
Roof coverings
The material decides the method, so we identify it before anything else is agreed. Slate is hard but thin, and older slates can have tired fixings, so it is cleaned with close control and never walked on. Clay tiles differ in age, finish and porosity, and some older ones are more fragile than they look. Concrete tiles are robust but textured, which is why they hold moisture and growth so readily.
Where a roof is already failing, we will say so at the site visit, and cleaning may wait until a roofer has made the repairs.
The method
Most of the moss is lifted by hand before any water reaches the roof. Taking the bulk off this way leaves the cleaning stage far less to do, so it can be a low-pressure clean or a soft wash rather than a matter of force.
We work from access towers, platforms and poles to get as close to the surface as practical without standing on it, and set the pressure to the lowest that achieves the result on that covering. High pressure aimed at weathered tiles can strip their surface and push water under the laps, which is why we do not rely on it.
After the clean
Once the roof is clean, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as standard. It works into the surface to target the spores and residual growth that cleaning cannot always reach, and it helps reduce how quickly moss and algae return.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on how shaded and damp the roof is, the covering and how it is looked after. It goes on in settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we remove the moss first and come back to treat. As that period draws to a close, we email to offer a further free assessment.
Step by step
Every roof follows the same order of work. What changes is the method inside each stage, which is set by what we found at the site visit.
We look at the roof from the ground and, where appropriate, with a drone, sharing the live images with you. We note the covering, its condition, the type of growth and the safest way to reach it.
You receive our recommendation, the reasoning behind it and a defined statement of works, so you know what is included and how it will be carried out before you agree to anything.
Operatives work from suitable access equipment, as close to the surface as practical, and take the bulk of the moss off by hand without walking on the tiles or slates.
The roof is cleaned at the pressure agreed for its covering. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment follows once the surface is clean and the weather is settled and free of frost.
Moss that has come down is cleared from the gutters and the downpipes are checked. The project lead then explains what was done, what was applied and what to expect over the coming months.
Before you book
A clean roof looks markedly better and stays clearer for longer, but cleaning is not a repair. We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows, and we tell you at the site visit where it may not. On an older Marlow roof, some honest weathering is part of its character.
Why us
We are based here and have cleaned roofs in the town, so river damp, hillside shade and its mix of roof coverings are conditions we know well.
Pressure is set for the tile and its condition after the moss has come off by hand, never as a shortcut that replaces that first stage.
Everything that comes off the roof is cleared from the gutters before we leave, so the moss does not simply move somewhere new.
Work is carried out by fully insured operatives from proper access equipment, and the project lead walks you through the finished roof at handover.
Nearby
From our base we also look after roofs in the villages close to town: Marlow Bottom in its wooded valley, Little Marlow and Bourne End downstream, and Bisham, Medmenham and Hurley along the river. Many share the same damp, tree-lined setting, so the same careful approach applies.

Questions
No. We work from access towers, platforms and poles that put operatives as close to the surface as practical without standing on it. Walking on slate or older clay tiles risks cracking them, and a closer, controlled position also lets us work more precisely.
Damp is the main reason. Mist off the Thames, wooded slopes and mature garden trees keep roofs wet for longer after rain, and moss and algae establish fastest where a surface rarely dries. Shaded, north-facing pitches usually show it first.
Yes, in most cases, once it has been assessed. We check the slates and fixings at the site visit, and if a roof is too fragile or already needs repair we will say so rather than clean it. Suitable slate is cleaned with close control and low pressure.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. A roof under trees near the river is likely to sit towards the shorter end, and an open, sunny one towards the longer. We email as the period draws to a close and offer a free reassessment.
No. Cleaning followed by the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment reduces regrowth and slows its return, but spores keep arriving on the wind and from nearby trees. How quickly growth reappears depends on shade, moisture and which way the roof faces.
Yes. Moss can be removed through the year. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment needs settled, frost-free weather, so during a cold spell we carry out the removal and come back to apply it when conditions allow.
Yes, as standard. Moss coming off the roof ends up in the gutters, so we clear the run and check the downpipes before we leave. Leaving it there would only move the problem lower down the building.
